Nowadays, the prediction about dental implant failure is determined through clinical and radiological evaluation. For this reason, predictions are highly dependent on the Implantologists’ experience. In addition, it is extremely crucial to detect in time if a dental implant is going to fail, due to time, cost, trauma to the patient, postoperative problems, among others. This paper proposes a procedure using multiple feature selection methods and classification algorithms to improve the accuracy of dental implant failures in the province of Misiones, Argentina, validated by human experts. The experimentation is performed with two data sets, a set of dental implants made for the case study and an artificially generated set. The proposed approach allows to know the most relevant features and improve the accuracy in the classification of the target class (dental implant failure), to avoid biasing the decision making based on the application and results of individual methods. The proposed approach achieves an accuracy of 79% of failures, while individual classifiers achieve a maximum of 72%.Hoy en día, la predicción del fracaso de un implante dental está determinado a través de una evaluación clínica y radiológica. Statement of problem: The use of bioinformatic strategies is growing in dental implant protocols. The current expansion of Omics sciences and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in implant dentistry applications have not been documented and analyzed as a predictive tool for the success of dental implants. Purpose: The purpose of this scoping review was to analyze how artificial intelligence algorithms and Omics technologies are being applied in the field of oral implantology as a predictive tool for dental implant success. Material and methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews checklist was followed. A search strategy was created at PubMed and Web of Science to answer the question “How is bioinformatics being applied in the area of oral implantology as a predictive tool for implant success?” Results: Thirteen articles were included in this review. Only 3 applied bioinformatic models combining AI algorithms and Omics technologies. These studies highlighted 2 key points for the creation of precision medicine: deep population phenotyping and the integration of Omics sciences in clinical protocols. Most of the studies identified applied AI only in the identification and classification of implant systems, quantification of peri-implant bone loss, and 3-dimensional bone analysis, planning implant placement. Conclusions: The conventional criteria currently used as a technique for the diagnosis and monitoring of dental implants are insufficient and have low accuracy. Models that apply AI algorithms combined with precision methodologies—biomarkers—are extremely useful in the creation of precision medicine, allowing medical dentists to forecast the success of the implant. Tools that integrate the different types of data, including imaging, molecular, risk factor, and implant characteristics, are needed to make a more accurate and personalized prediction of implant success.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Statement of problem. Artificial intelligence (AI) applications are growing in dental implant procedures. The current expansion and performance of AI models in implant dentistry applications have not yet been systematically documented and analyzed. Purpose. The purposeof this systematic review was to assess the performance of Ai models in implant dentistry for implant type recognition, implant success prediction by using patient risk factors and ontology criteria, and implant design optimization combining finite element analysis (FEA) calculations and AI models. Material and methods. An electronic systematic review was completed in 5 databases: MEDLINE/ PubMed, EMBASE, World of Science, Cochrane, and Scopus. A manual search was also conducted. Peerreviewed studies that developed AI models for implant type recognition, implant success prediction, and implant design optimization were included. The search strategy included articles published until February 21, 2021. Two investigators independently evaluated the quality of the studies by applying the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist for Quasi-Experimental Studies (nonrandomized experimental studies). A third investigator was consulted to resolve lack of consensus. Results. Seventeen articles were included: 7 investigations analyzed AI models for implant type recognition, 7 studies included AI prediction models for implant success forecast, and 3 studies evaluated AI models for optimization of implant designs. The AI models developed to recognize implant type by using periapical and panoramic images obtained an overall accuracy outcome ranging from 93.8% to 98%. The models to predict osteointegration success or implant success by using different input data varied among the studies, ranging from 62.4% to 80.5%. Finally, the studies that developed AI models to optimize implant designs seem to agree on the applicability of AI models to improve the design of dental implants. This improvement includes minimizing the stress at the implant-bone interface by 36.6% compared with the finite element model; optimizing the implant design porosity, length, and diameter to improve the finite element calculations; or accurately determining the elastic modulus of the implant-bone interface. Conclusions. AI models for implant type recognition, implant success prediction, and implant design optimization have demonstrated great potential but are still in development. Additional studies are indispensable to the further development and assessment of the clinical performance of AI models for those implant dentistry applications reviewed

Coatings and Surface Modification of Alloys for Tribo-Corrosion Applications

This review of the tribocorrosion of coatings and surface modifications covers nearly 195 papers and reviews that have been published in the past 15 years, as compared to only 37 works published up to 2007, which were the subject of a previous review published in 2007. It shows that the research into the subject area is vibrant and growing, to cover emerging deposition, surface modification and testing techniques as well as environmental influences and modelling developments. This growth reflects the need for machines to operate in harsh environments coupled with requirements for increased service life, lower running costs and improved safety factors. Research has also reacted to the need for multifunctional coating surfaces as well as functionally graded systems with regard to depth. The review covers a range of coating types designed for a wide range of potential applications. The emerging technologies are seen to be molten-, solution-, PVD- and PEO-based coatings, with CVD coatings being a less popular solution. There is a growing research interest in duplex surface engineering and coating systems. Surface performance shows a strong playoff between wear, friction and corrosion rates, often with antagonistic relationships and complicated interactions between multiple mechanisms at different scale lengths within tribocorrosion contacts. The tribologically induced stresses are seen to drive damage propagation and accelerate corrosion either within the coating or at the coating coating–substrate interface. This places a focus on coating defect density. The environment (such as pH, DO2, CO2, salinity and temperature) is also shown to have a strong influence on tribocorrosion performance. Coating and surface modification solutions being developed for tribocorrosion applications include a whole range of electrodeposited coatings, hard and tough coatings and high-impedance coatings such as doped diamond-like carbon. Hybrid and multilayered coatings are also being used to control damage penetration into the coating (to increase toughness) and to manage stresses. A particular focus involves the combination of various treatment techniques. The review also shows the importance of the microstructure, the active phases that are dissolved and the critical role of surface films and their composition (oxide or passive) in tribocorrosion performance which, although discovered for bulk materials, is equally applicable to coating performance. New techniques show methods for revealing the response of surfaces to tribocorrosion (i.e., scanning electrochemical microscopy). Modelling tribocorrosion has yet to embrace the full range of coatings and the fact that some coatings/environments result in reduced wear and thus are antagonistic rather than synergistic. The actual synergistic/antagonistic mechanisms are not well understood, making them difficult to model
