    Cascade or Direct Speech Translation? A Case Study

    Speech translation has been traditionally tackled under a cascade approach, chaining speech recognition and machine translation components to translate from an audio source in a given language into text or speech in a target language. Leveraging on deep learning approaches to natural language processing, recent studies have explored the potential of direct end-to-end neural modelling to perform the speech translation task. Though several benefits may come from end-to-end modelling, such as a reduction in latency and error propagation, the comparative merits of each approach still deserve detailed evaluations and analyses. In this work, we compared state-of-the-art cascade and direct approaches on the under-resourced Basque–Spanish language pair, which features challenging phenomena such as marked differences in morphology and word order. This case study thus complements other studies in the field, which mostly revolve around the English language. We describe and analysed in detail the mintzai-ST corpus, prepared from the sessions of the Basque Parliament, and evaluated the strengths and limitations of cascade and direct speech translation models trained on this corpus, with variants exploiting additional data as well. Our results indicated that, despite significant progress with end-to-end models, which may outperform alternatives in some cases in terms of automated metrics, a cascade approach proved optimal overall in our experiments and manual evaluations. © 2022 by the authors.     We summarize the accomplishments of a multi-disciplinary workshop exploring the computational and scientific issues surrounding the discovery of linguistic units (subwords and words) in a language without orthography.     Improving the translation environment for professional translators

    When using computer-aided translation systems in a typical, professional translation workflow, there are several stages at which there is room for improvement. The SCATE (Smart Computer-Aided Translation Environment) project investigated several of these aspects, both from a human-computer interaction point of view, as well as from a purely technological side. This paper describes the SCATE research with respect to improved fuzzy matching, parallel treebanks, the integration of translation memories with machine translation, quality estimation, terminology extraction from comparable texts, the use of speech recognition in the translation process, and human computer interaction and interface design for the professional translation environment. For each of these topics, we describe the experiments we performed and the conclusions drawn, providing an overview of the highlights of the entire SCATE project

    Speech-Gesture Mapping and Engagement Evaluation in Human Robot Interaction

    A robot needs contextual awareness, effective speech production and complementing non-verbal gestures for successful communication in society. In this paper, we present our end-to-end system that tries to enhance the effectiveness of non-verbal gestures. For achieving this, we identified prominently used gestures in performances by TED speakers and mapped them to their corresponding speech context and modulated speech based upon the attention of the listener. The proposed method utilized Convolutional Pose Machine [4] to detect the human gesture. Dominant gestures of TED speakers were used for learning the gesture-to-speech mapping. The speeches by them were used for training the model. We also evaluated the engagement of the robot with people by conducting a social survey. The effectiveness of the performance was monitored by the robot and it self-improvised its speech pattern on the basis of the attention level of the audience, which was calculated using visual feedback from the camera. The effectiveness of interaction as well as the decisions made during improvisation was further evaluated based on the head-pose detection and interaction survey.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, Under review in IRC 201

    INFLECTIONAL MORPHEMES IN ENGLISH COMPARED WITH BAHASA INDONESIA AND BASA SUNDA

    The paper entitled “Inflectional Morphemes in English Compared with Bahasa Indonesia and Basa Sunda” is intended to discuss the use of inflectional morphemes to form words in English compared with Bahasa Indonesia, and Basa Sunda. The aims of the study is to describe the forms/positions and the functions of English inflectional morphemes and to find out the similarities and the differences among the three languages. Inflectional morphemes are kinds of morphemes which do not change lexical meaning or part of speech. In English, the inflectional morphemes are suffixes, which are attached at the end of words. In the other two languages, inflectional morphemes can be attached in more various positions. It can be concluded that inflectional morphemes are used in English, Bahasa Indonesia and Basa Sunda. English only has one inflectional morpheme while the others are more varied. There are similarities and differences in using inflectional morphemes in English, Bahasa Indonesia and Basa Sunda. All the languages use inflectional morphemes to show plurality, to indicate comparative or superlative and active/passive verbs. Basa Sunda has more various combination of affixes than others
