Design of One-Coincidence Frequency Hopping Sequence Sets for FHMA Systems
Department of Electrical EngineeringIn the thesis, we discuss frequency hopping multiple access (FHMA) systems and construction of optimal frequency hopping sequence and applications. Moreover, FHMA is widely used in modern communication systems such as Bluetooth, ultrawideband (UWB), military, etc. For these systems, it is desirable to employ frequency-hopping sequences (FHSs) having low Hamming correlation in order to reduce the multiple-access interference.
In general, optimal FHSs with respect to the Lempel-Greenberger bound do not always exist for all lengths and frequency set sizes. Therefore, it is an important problem to verify whether an optimal FHS with respect to the Lempel-Greenberger bound exists or not for a given length and a given frequency set size.
I constructed FHS satisfying optimal with respect to the Lempel-Greenberger bound and Peng-Fan bound for efficiency of available frequency. Parameters of a new OC-FHS set are length p^2-p over Z_(p^2 ) by using a primitive element of Z_p. The new OC-FHS set with H_a (X)=0 and H_c (X)=1 can be applied to several recent applications using ISM band (e.g. IoT) based on BLE and Zigbee.
In the construction and theorem, I used these mathematical back grounds in preliminaries (i.e., finite field, primitive element, primitive polynomial, frequency hopping sequence, multiple frequency shift keying, DS/CDMA) in order to prove mathematically.
The outline of thesis is as follows. In preliminaries, we explain algorithm for minimal polynomial for sequence, linear complexities, Hamming correlation and bounds for FHSs and some applications are presented. In section ???, algorithm for complexity, correlation and bound for FHSs and some applications are presented. In section ???, using information in section ??? and ???, a new construction of OC-FHS is presented. In order to prove the optimality of FHSs, all cases of Hamming autocorrelation and Hamming cross-correlation are mathematically calculated.
Moreover, in order to raise data rate or the number of users, a new method is presented. Using this method, sequences are divided into two times of length and satisfies Lempel-Greenberger bound and Peng-Fan bound.clos
Iterative receiver in multiuser relaying systems with fast frequency-hopping modulation
In this thesis, a novel iterative receiver and its improved version are proposed for
relay-assisted multiuser communications, in which multiple users transmit to a destination
with the help of a relay and using fast frequency-hopping modulation. Each
user employs a channel encoder to protect its information and facilitate interference
cancellation at the receiver. The signal received at the relay is either amplified, or
partially decoded with a simple energy detector, before being forwarded to the destination.
Under flat Rayleigh fading channels, the receiver at the destination can
be implemented non-coherently, i.e., it does not require the instantaneous channel
information to demodulate the users’ transmitted signals. The proposed iterative
algorithm at the destination exploits the soft outputs of the channel decoders to
successively extract the maximum likelihood symbols of the users and perform interference
cancellation. The iterative method is successfully applied for both cases of
amplify-and-forward and partial decode-and-forward relaying. The error performance
of the proposed iterative receiver is investigated by computer simulation. Under the
same spectral efficiency, simulation results demonstrate the excellent performance of
the proposed receiver when compared to the performance of decoding without interference
cancellation as well as the performance of the maximum likelihood multiuser
detection previously developed for uncoded transmission. Simulation results also suggest
that a proper selection of channel coding schemes can help to support significant
more users without consuming extra system resources.
In addition, to further enhance the receiver’s performance in terms of the bit error
rate, an improved version of the iterative receiver is presented. Such an improved receiver
invokes inner-loop iterations between the channel decoders and the demappers
in such a way that the soft outputs of the channel decoders are also used to refine the
outputs of the demappers for every outer-loop iteration. Simulation results indicate
a performance gain of about 2.5dB by using the two-loop receiver when compared to
the performance of the first proposed receiver

Interference cancellation for shot-code DS-CDMA in the presence of channel fading
Interference from other adjacent users in wireless applications is a major problem
in direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA). This is also known as the
near-far problem where a strong signal from one user interferes with other users. The
current approach to deal with the near-far problem in DS-CDMA systems is to use strict
transmitter power control. An alternative approach is to use near-far resistant receivers.
The practical near-far resistance receiver structure is the adaptive decorrelating detectors
since it avoids complex matrix inversion.
The existing CDMA standard known as IS-95 uses a long signature code
sequence. However for simplicity, the adaptive multi-user receiver uses short signature
code sequence. The problem is that adaptive receivers lose near-far resistance as the
number of users increases in the system. This thesis describes a novel method of multistage
decision feedback cancellation (DFC) scheme immune from the near-far problem.
The performance of the new DFC structure is constructed using three different adaptive
algorithms: the least mean squared (LMS), the recursive least squared (RLS) and the
linearly constraint constant modulus (LCCM) adaptive algorithms. It is found that LMS
adaptive algorithm provides the best result considering its simple hardware complexity.
It is also found that the LMS adaptive receiver along with the DFC structure provides a
better bit synchronization capability to the over all system. Since the receiver is near-far
resistant, the LMS adaptive receiver along with the decision feedback cancellation
structure also performs better in the presence of Rayleigh fading

The recent growth in the mobile phone market is based on the Global System for Mobile (GSM) communications and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) standards creating the next-generation wireless technologies in the Iraqi Wireless Communication market. One of the essential issues of this research is to investigate the performance of the decreased Quality Of Service (QoS) caused by interferences in the services on GSM/CDMA operators in Iraq. Many issues should be studied and taken into consideration, such as; does the Multi-Coalition Forces cause the interferences, jamming, higher rate of calls drop and false ringing; or are they caused by bad design and planning? Do we need to optimise our network due to the large number of users? All these factors are investigated and the measurements of most service providers and government agencies will be gathered. A detailed analysis was included from the providers with measurements of performance and the reasons for the deterioration of wireless services. The novel contributions of this thesis is the extensive radio measurement campaign over the three mobile an CDMA operator networks and the analysis and recommendations that were drawn to suggest the best approach to improve the QoS of Wireless communication technologies. Awareness of actual reasons behind the deterioration of services will be raised to the Iraqi Government, CMC and the wireless service providers

Study of continuous-phase four-state modulation for cordless telecommunications. Assessment by simulation of CP-QFSK as an alternative modulation scheme for TDMA digital cordless telecommunications systems operating in indoor applications
One of the major driving elements behind the explosive boom in wireless revolution is the advances in the field of modulation which plays a fundamental role in any communication system, and especially in cellular radio systems. Hence, the elaborate choice of an efficient modulation scheme is of paramount importance in the design and employment of any communications system. Work presented in this thesis is an investigation (study) of the feasibility of whether multilevel FSK modulation scheme would provide a viable alternative modem that can be employed in TDMA cordless communications systems. In the thesis the design and performance analysis of a non-coherent multi-level modem that offers a great deal of bandwidth efficiency and hardware simplicity is studied in detail. Simulation results demonstrate that 2RC pre-modulation filter pulse shaping with a modulation index of 0.3, and pre-detection filter normalized equivalent noise bandwidth of 1.5 are optimum system parameter values. Results reported in chapter 5 signify that an adjacent channel rejection factor of around 40 dB has been achieved at channel spacing of 1.5 times the symbol rate while the DECT system standards stipulated a much lower rejection limit criterion (25-30dB), implying that CP-QFSK modulation out-performs the conventional GMSK as it causes significantly less ACI, thus it is more spectrally efficient in a multi-channel system. However, measured system performance in terms of BER indicates that this system does not coexist well with other interferers as at delay spreads between 100ns to 200ns, which are commonly encountered in such indoor environment, a severe degradation in system performance apparently caused by multi-path fading has been noticed, and there exists a noise floor of about 40 dB, i.e. high irreducible error rate of less than 5.10-3.
