Discovering qualitative empirical laws
In this paper we describe GLAUBER, an AI system that models the scientific discovery of qualitative empirical laws. We have tested the system on data from the history of early chemistry, and it has rediscovered such concepts as acids, alkalis, and salts, as well as laws relating these concepts. After discussing GLAUBER we examine the program's relation to other discovery systems, particularly methods for conceptual clustering and language acquisition

Language acquisition and machine learning
In this paper, we review recent progress in the field of machine learning and examine its implications for computational models of language acquisition. As a framework for understanding this research, we propose four component tasks involved in learning from experience - aggregation, clustering, characterization, and storage. We then consider four common problems studied by machine learning researchers - learning from examples, heuristics learning, conceptual clustering, and learning macro-operators - describing each in terms of our framework. After this, we turn to the problem of grammar acquisition, relating this problem to other learning tasks and reviewing four AI systems that have addressed the problem. Finally, we note some limitations of the earlier work and propose an alternative approach to modeling the mechanisms underlying language acquisition

Verb derivation in modern Greek inside alternation classes
In this paper I present five alternations of the verb system of Modern Greek, which are recurrently mapped on the syntactic frame NPi__NP. The actual claim is that only the participation in alternations and/or the allocation to an alternation variant can reliably determine the relation between a verb derivative and its base. In the second part, the conceptual structures and semantic/situational fields of a large number of ā-Ćzoā derivatives appearing inside alternation classes are presented. The restricted character of the conceptual and situational preferences inside alternations classes suggests the dominant character of the alternations component

Monitoring conceptual development with text mining technologies: CONSPECT
This paper evaluates CONSPECT, a service that analyses states in a learnerās conceptual development. It combines two technologies ā Latent Semantic Analysis to analyse text and Network Analysis (NA) to provide visualisations ā into a technique called Meaningful Interaction Analysis (MIA). CONSPECT was designed to help both online learners and their tutors monitor their conceptual development. This paper reports on the validation experiments undertaken to determine how well LSA matches first year medical students in clustering concepts and in annotating text. The validation used several techniques, including card sorting and Likert scales. CONSPECT produces almost āpeerā quality results and what remains to be tested is whether it improves with more advanced learners. One of the experiments showed an average 0.7 correlation between humans and CONSPECT
i-JEN: Visual interactive Malaysia crime news retrieval system
Supporting crime news investigation involves a mechanism to help monitor the current and past status of criminal events. We believe this could be well facilitated by focusing on the user interfaces and the event crime model aspects. In this paper we discuss on a development of Visual Interactive Malaysia Crime News Retrieval System (i-JEN) and describe the approach, user studies and planned, the system architecture and future plan. Our main objectives are to construct crime-based event; investigate the use of crime-based event in improving the classification and clustering; develop an interactive crime news retrieval system; visualize crime news in an effective and interactive way; integrate them into a usable and robust system and evaluate the usability and system performance. The system will serve as a news monitoring system which aims to automatically organize, retrieve and present the crime news in such a way as to support an effective monitoring, searching, and browsing for the target users groups of general public, news analysts and policemen or crime investigators. The study will contribute to the better understanding of the crime data consumption in the Malaysian context as well as the developed system with the visualisation features to address crime data and the eventual goal of combating the crimes
Conceptual search ā ESI, litigation and the issue of language
Across the globe, legal, business and technical practitioners charged with managing
information are continually challenged by rapid-fire evolution and growth in the legal
and technology fields. In the United States, new compliance requirements,
amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) and corresponding case
law, along with technical advances, have made litigation support one of the most
exciting professions in the legal arena. In the UK, revisions to the Practice Direction
to CPR Rule 31 require parties in civil litigation to consider the impacts associated
with electronic documents.
One emerging technology trendsāboth aiding and complicating the management of
electronically stored information (ESI) in litigation in the US, EU and UK alikeāis
the notion of āconceptual search.ā This paper focuses on the evolution of conceptual
search technology, and predictions of where this science will take legal professionals
and technical information managers in coming years and a look at the advantages
conceptual search can provide in dealing with the issue of language.
This paper will focus primarily and the latent semantic analysis approach to
conceptual search and why this approach is advantageous when searching ESI
regardless of the language used in the documents, even to the extent of allowing for
cross language searching and accurate searching of documents that contain co-mingle
foreign terms with the native language
