    Benchmarking operation readiness of the high-speed rail (HSR) network

    At present, HSR networks have been significantly extended to accommodate increased passenger demand because the service is believed to unleash social benefits. Nevertheless, the investment in the HSR project is substantially higher than in other transportation projects. Also, most of the HSR network has faced unavoidable issues during operation, such as lack of passenger demand, low operating profit, and non-safety issues. Despite issues addressed, HSR organisations could not maintain their performance to reach the standard and the globe’s directions, especially the sustainability pillar. Those issues become ineffective for HSR organisations, impacting the passenger’s quality of life and socio-economic. This thesis aims to develop a systems-based benchmarking framework for all HSR networks to enhance operating costs, punctuality, productivity, risk and uncertainty, sustainability, and urbanisation efficiency. Those six KPIs are necessary for the sustainable development of the upcoming HSR network. The thesis has made several significant contributions to developing a benchmarking framework for long-term improvement. First, this thesis is the world’s first to integrate a Bayesian distribution and Python programming to improve safety across the railway network. As a result, the created model shows higher accuracy than previous models due to the combination of long-term data sets. Moreover, this thesis reveals the decision tree and the Petri-net models to identify the risk level. Thus, it is an advantage for the rail authorities to evaluate and enhance safety performance. Next, the thesis focuses on life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost (LCC) frameworks. The LCA model reflects the environmental perspectives of each rail network. This thesis provides an in-depth analysis of each life cycle stage that shows the energy consumption rate and CO2 emission rate. The outcome can point out energy consumption and CO2 emission performance. In addition, this thesis is the world's first study concerning uncertainty costs during HSR operations regarding the LCC analysis. The net present value calculation with a discount rate has been added with the Monte Carlo Simulation. In this section, the developed model allows HSR authorities to firmly manage the budget under uncertain conditions, especially during an operating stage. Lastly, this thesis concentrates on the social impacts of HSR service, particularly on a living quality, educational benefits, and economic opportunities. The long-term datasets have been analysed by using K-nearest neighbour and Pearson correlation techniques. The result can point out the company’s performance toward social advantages. By adopting the models in practice, people can obtain more benefits from the HSR service. By promoting the novelty framework into practice, benchmarking through diversification of current HSR networks is addressed. The selected routes and networks are chosen using a range of factors. For illustrate, the collected networks must be stable and trustworthy, as determined by their long-term operation for at least ten years. Furthermore, the selected HSR lines are mixed in geography, technology, and relevant conditions to avoid bias. The five noteworthy networks and routes consist of Beijing-Shanghai (China), Paris-Lyon (France), Tokyo-Osaka (Japan), Madrid-Barcelona (Spain), and Seoul-Busan (South Korea). The analysis results indicate that none of the HSR networks illustrates high performance in all pillars. An overview result demonstrates that the CR’s networks perform the best performance following the Renfe, SNCF, JR Central, and Korail networks. In addition, the thesis has provided policy implications for long-term development, in particular, safety services, social impacts, environmental impacts, and technology and innovation. Those suggestions can be applied practically to both existing and upcoming HSR networks

    Housing quality and lost (public) space in Croatia

    IN ENGLISH: In the post-socialist period and within the current social transition context, urban and rural Croatia has, just like other transition countries, experienced many changes in the social structure and space. One example is the housing quality which is a replica of the situation in the Croatian society and has also undergone some major changes. Socially oriented housing construction co-financed by the state and the cities is in an unfavourable position compared to private housing construction. In the last twenty years the amount of the social housing construction has been only a minor part of the total contruction work in the country. For instance, out of nine newly planned residential housing developments in Zagreb, the capital city, only three have been completed and the work on the rest of them has stopped and is unlikely to continue. Private construction work prevails especially on the edge of the city and is characterised by high density housing. This type of housing construction doesn't benefit the majority of citizens in search of accommodation (price per square meter is too high, low-quality building). There is also a big problem of the community facilities (primary and secondary infrastructure, schools, kindergartens, playgrounds, green areas, sidewalks, public transport etc.). The existing globalisation-transition circumstances of the Croatian society corroborate the fact which experts of various profiles often point out: ignoring the process of (urban) planning will irreparably damage the space. The city transformation shows the absence of comprehensive urban planning which results in an ever increasing number of random buildings which do not fit in the surroundings. This leads up to yet another important issue – the shrinking and, in some cases, disappearance of public space which becomes the “lost space“. In recent years there has been a lot of building in the city core and on the edge which does not quite fit in the existing urban structure, image or the skyline of the city. The current situation in the process of planning can be characterized as a conflict and imbalance between the powerful actors (mostly political and economic) and less powerful actors (mostly professional and civil). The actors who have the political power and influence and the ones who possess the capital are forming an “alliance” between two important layers of the social structure. The lack of civil and professional actors, “lost spatial actors”, and therefore of civic aggregation is also present and that is also the cause of public space “disappearance” and undermined process of public participation. --------------- IN CROATIAN: U postsocijalističkom razdoblju i trenutnom tranzicijskom kontekstu urbana i ruralna Hrvatska su, kao i ostale tranzicijske zemlje, doživjele mnoge promjene u društvenoj strukturi i samom prostoru. Na primjeru kvalitete stanovanja kao replike stanja u hrvatskom društvu mogu se vidjeti značajne promjene. Društveno usmjerena stambena izgradnja sufinancirana od strane države i gradova je stoga rjeđa i u nepovoljnijoj je situaciji prema privatnoj stanogradnji. Zadnjih dvadeset godina udjel socijalne stambene gradnje je zanemariv u ukupnoj izgradnji na razini zemlje. Primjerice, od devet planiranih stambenih naselja izgrađenih po modelu POS-a u Zagrebu samo su tri i završena. Na ostalima je proces gradnje zastao i ne čini se da će se privesti kraju. Privatna je gradnje prisutnija, posebno na rubovima grada, a obilježava je visoka gustoća gradnje. Ovakav tip gradnje ne odgovara većini stanovnika koji su u procesu potražnje stambene nekretnine (visoka cijena kvadratnog metra, a slaba kvaliteta gradnje). Postoji također i problem nedostatne opremljenosti susjedstva (primarna i sekundarna infrastruktura, škole, vrtići, igrališta, zelene površine, pješačke staze, javni transport itd.). Navedene globalizacijsko-tranzicijske okolnosti hrvatskog društva potvrđuju ono što eksperti različitih profila ističu, a to je da će ignoriranje procesa (urbanog) planiranja nepovratno uništiti prostor gradova. Ovakve transformacije pokazuju nedostatak sustavnog urbanog planiranja što rezultira sve većim brojem zgrada koje se ne uklapaju u neposrednu okolinu. To nadalje dovodi do drugog važnog aspekta – smanjivanja i u nekim slučajevima, nestanka javnog prostora koji postaje „izgubljeni prostor“. Posljednjih je godina izgrađen velik broj zgrada, i u središtu i na rubovima grada, koje se ne uklapaju u postojeću urbanu strukturu, izgled ili vizuru grada. Ovakvu situaciju obilježavaju sukob i neravnoteža između moćnijih društvenih aktera (većinom političkih i ekonomskih) i onih manje moćnih (većinom profesionalnih i civilnih). Politički i ekonomski akteri se često povezuju u „savez“ dvaju najjačih u društvenoj strukturi. S druge strane nedostatak utjecaja civilnih i profesionalnih aktera kao „izgubljenih prostornih aktera“ dovodi do „nestanka“ javnih prostora te smanjenja važnosti procesa participacije (sudjelovanja javnosti)

    Assuming Data Integrity and Empirical Evidence to The Contrary

    Background: Not all respondents to surveys apply their minds or understand the posed questions, and as such provide answers which lack coherence, and this threatens the integrity of the research. Casual inspection and limited research of the 10-item Big Five Inventory (BFI-10), included in the dataset of the World Values Survey (WVS), suggested that random responses may be common. Objective: To specify the percentage of cases in the BRI-10 which include incoherent or contradictory responses and to test the extent to which the removal of these cases will improve the quality of the dataset. Method: The WVS data on the BFI-10, measuring the Big Five Personality (B5P), in South Africa (N=3 531), was used. Incoherent or contradictory responses were removed. Then the cases from the cleaned-up dataset were analysed for their theoretical validity. Results: Only 1 612 (45.7%) cases were identified as not including incoherent or contradictory responses. The cleaned-up data did not mirror the B5P- structure, as was envisaged. The test for common method bias was negative. Conclusion: In most cases the responses were incoherent. Cleaning up the data did not improve the psychometric properties of the BFI-10. This raises concerns about the quality of the WVS data, the BFI-10, and the universality of B5P-theory. Given these results, it would be unwise to use the BFI-10 in South Africa. Researchers are alerted to do a proper assessment of the psychometric properties of instruments before they use it, particularly in a cross-cultural setting

    Leading Towards Voice and Innovation: The Role of Psychological Contract

    Background: Empirical evidence generally suggests that psychological contract breach (PCB) leads to negative outcomes. However, some literature argues that, occasionally, PCB leads to positive outcomes. Aim: To empirically determine when these positive outcomes occur, focusing on the role of psychological contract (PC) and leadership style (LS), and outcomes such as employ voice (EV) and innovative work behaviour (IWB). Method: A cross-sectional survey design was adopted, using reputable questionnaires on PC, PCB, EV, IWB, and leadership styles. Correlation analyses were used to test direct links within the model, while regression analyses were used to test for the moderation effects. Results: Data with acceptable psychometric properties were collected from 11 organisations (N=620). The results revealed that PCB does not lead to substantial changes in IWB. PCB correlated positively with prohibitive EV, but did not influence promotive EV, which was a significant driver of IWB. Leadership styles were weak predictors of EV and IWB, and LS only partially moderated the PCB-EV relationship. Conclusion: PCB did not lead to positive outcomes. Neither did LS influencing the relationships between PCB and EV or IWB. Further, LS only partially influenced the relationships between variables, and not in a manner which positively influence IWB
