A Novel Smart Device Student Response System For Supporting High Quality Active Learning In The Engineering And Science Disciplines
This paper proposes and presents a unique smart device student response system
(SDSRS) that allows for a more flexible input than existing classroom response
systems, such as clickers. This, in turn, allows students to respond to the lecturer with
higher quality and more relevant information and, thus, improves their active learning.
This is of particular relevance in the science and engineering disciplines where
methodology is as important, if not more so, than the final answer. The SDSRS allows
the lecturer to quickly obtain this pertinent information in real-time within the classroom
environment.
The proposed system consists of three main elements, namely a student sketch
application, a lecturer view-and-edit application and a central cloud-based service to
co-ordinate the exchange of information between the two applications. The system was
evaluated within two different engineering classrooms, with very positive feedback
obtained from both the lecturers and students involved. Details of the evaluation
process, and the feedback obtained, are presented within
Developing High Performance Computing Resources for Teaching Cluster and Grid Computing courses
High-Performance Computing (HPC) and the ability to process large amounts of data are of
paramount importance for UK business and economy as outlined by Rt Hon David Willetts
MP at the HPC and Big Data conference in February 2014. However there is a shortage of
skills and available training in HPC to prepare and expand the workforce for the HPC and
Big Data research and development. Currently, HPC skills are acquired mainly by students
and staff taking part in HPC-related research projects, MSc courses, and at the dedicated
training centres such as Edinburgh University’s EPCC. There are few UK universities teaching
the HPC, Clusters and Grid Computing courses at the undergraduate level. To address the
issue of skills shortages in the HPC it is essential to provide teaching and training as part of
both postgraduate and undergraduate courses. The design and development of such courses is
challenging since the technologies and software in the fields of large scale distributed systems
such as Cluster, Cloud and Grid computing are undergoing continuous change. The students
completing the HPC courses should be proficient in these evolving technologies and equipped
with practical and theoretical skills for future jobs in this fast developing area.
In this paper we present our experience in developing the HPC, Cluster and Grid modules
including a review of existing HPC courses offered at the UK universities. The topics covered in
the modules are described, as well as the coursework projects based on practical laboratory work.
We conclude with an evaluation based on our experience over the last ten years in developing
and delivering the HPC modules on the undergraduate courses, with suggestions for future work
An Intelligent Tutoring System for Cloud Computing
Intelligent tutoring system (ITS) is a computer system which aims to provide immediate and customized or reactions to learners, usually without the intervention of human teacher's instructions. Secretariats professional to have the common goal of learning a meaningful and effective manner through the use of a variety of computing technologies enabled. There are many examples of professional Secretariats used in both formal education and in professional settings that have proven their capabilities. There is a close relationship between private lessons intelligent, cognitive learning and design theories; and there are ongoing to improve the effectiveness of ITS research. And it aims to find a solution to the problem of over-reliance on students' teachers for quality education. The program aims to provide access to high-quality education to every student, and therefore the reform of the education system as a whole.
In this paper, we will use Intelligent Tutoring System Builder (ITSB) to build an education system on cloud computing in terms of the concept of cloud computing and components and how to take advantage of cloud computing in the field
