International audienceSimplicial complexes are at the heart of Computational Algebraic Topology, since they give a concrete, combinatorial description of otherwise rather abstract objects which makes many important topological computations possible. The whole theory has many applications such as coding theory, robotics or digital image analysis. In this paper we present a formalization in the COQ theorem prover of simplicial complexes and their incidence matrices as well as the main theorem that gives meaning to the definition of homology groups and is a first step towards their computation

TRANSFORMATION AND RESILIENCE AT SHURI-JO: DEFINING A GENOME OF PLACE

The 1970s is widely regarded as the decade of environmental awakening in America. But many of the critical variables that later informed this ongoing conversation were mobilized in the faraway island of Okinawa, Japan's southernmost prefecture that became a new territory of the United States by virtue of their victory in World War II (WWII). The same powerful military machine that destroyed much of Japan reorganized itself into a nation-building enterprise focused on restoring and reorienting the country into a model democracy. This dissertation will construct an interactive design framework that focuses on the creation of Okinawa's new university as a microcosm of the exchanges that redefined the island's most important cultural icon. In addition to the military government, I will illustrate how visiting professors from Michigan State University interacted with Okinawan educators to shape the University of the Ryukyus (Ryudai), a new land-grant university that produced transformative changes that reached far beyond the campus boundaries. I will demonstrate that Ryudai's post-war redevelopment period, however, takes on more profound implications of sustainability if contextualized within a "genome of place" that explores biotic, abiotic, social, and economic influences across space and time. Built on the sacred grounds of Shuri-jo, the destroyed 14th century castle, the Ryudai campus was eventually dismantled and relocated to a larger site when Okinawa reverted to Japanese sovereignty in 1972. This dissertation argues that the resilience of post-war Okinawa was symbolized by the radical transformation of the Shuri-jo site and that by disentangling the many layers of this palimpsest, its meaning may transcend its short timeframe. A critical inquiry of textual and visual materials will articulate how Shuri-jo became an iconic Cold War site where Eastern and Western cultures intersected, modernism and traditionalism converged, and natural and human systems collided. By locating the mid-century university experiment within a centuries-old context, I will also illustrate how its successes and failures may inform Okinawa's political future as it inherits several decommissioned military sites from the U.S. government

Mediated urban civic space : info deck of the Hong Kong SAR Government Info-tainment Headquarters

There are tremendous demands on the new government to reflect her status during this critical transition. The mission of designing a new government headquarters to represent her new identity, present order and future vision is vital for all parties involved - China, HK and mostly importantly her citizens. This thesis will address both the urban and architectural design of the New Government Info-tainment Headquarters by way of a unique synergy of contemporary media and government in program and technology. The focus will be the mediated interface of the information spaces and communicative facades in shaping the civic plaza - the Info Deck - along the harbour waterfront. This high tech communication, media intensive mixed-use civic complex aims to enhance both participatory and representative Democracy. Its prominence functions as a true forum that provides multiple communication channels and enhance dialogue in an open society. It serves as information symbol or media icon of the representation, communication and interaction between HK government and her citizens. In this proposal, government sponsored political and educational media is strategically juxtaposed and overlaid with privatized independent political media, entertainment and educational media to increase transparency and accessibility of government programs and operations. This framework suggests the activation of the plaza during the day as well as at night with different activities. This design seeks not only to transform the government's mental image perceptually, but also the actual physical appearance of the complex and its plaza. Its synthesis will challenge the conservative concept of the traditional political domain, information territory and institutional building typology using both traditional media and contemporary multi-media in this information era.by Tak-Wing Louie.M.Arch

An aesthetic for sustainable interactions in product-service systems?

However the application of this concept is still very limited because its implementation and diffusion is hindered by several barriers (cultural, corporate and regulative ones). The paper investigates the barriers that affect the attractiveness and acceptation of eco-efficient PSS alternatives, and opens the debate on the aesthetic of eco-efficient PSS, and the way in which aesthetic could enhance some specific inner qualities of this kinds of innovations. Integrating insights from semiotics, the paper outlines some first research hypothesis on how the aesthetic elements of an eco-efficient PSS could facilitate user attraction, acceptation and satisfaction
