Functional Requirements-Based Automated Testing for Avionics
We propose and demonstrate a method for the reduction of testing effort in
safety-critical software development using DO-178 guidance. We achieve this
through the application of Bounded Model Checking (BMC) to formal low-level
requirements, in order to generate tests automatically that are good enough to
replace existing labor-intensive test writing procedures while maintaining
independence from implementation artefacts. Given that existing manual
processes are often empirical and subjective, we begin by formally defining a
metric, which extends recognized best practice from code coverage analysis
strategies to generate tests that adequately cover the requirements. We then
formulate the automated test generation procedure and apply its prototype in
case studies with industrial partners. In review, the method developed here is
demonstrated to significantly reduce the human effort for the qualification of
software products under DO-178 guidance
Maintenance of Automated Test Suites in Industry: An Empirical study on Visual GUI Testing
Context: Verification and validation (V&V) activities make up 20 to 50
percent of the total development costs of a software system in practice. Test
automation is proposed to lower these V&V costs but available research only
provides limited empirical data from industrial practice about the maintenance
costs of automated tests and what factors affect these costs. In particular,
these costs and factors are unknown for automated GUI-based testing.
Objective: This paper addresses this lack of knowledge through analysis of
the costs and factors associated with the maintenance of automated GUI-based
tests in industrial practice.
Method: An empirical study at two companies, Siemens and Saab, is reported
where interviews about, and empirical work with, Visual GUI Testing is
performed to acquire data about the technique's maintenance costs and
feasibility.
Results: 13 factors are observed that affect maintenance, e.g. tester
knowledge/experience and test case complexity. Further, statistical analysis
shows that developing new test scripts is costlier than maintenance but also
that frequent maintenance is less costly than infrequent, big bang maintenance.
In addition a cost model, based on previous work, is presented that estimates
the time to positive return on investment (ROI) of test automation compared to
manual testing.
Conclusions: It is concluded that test automation can lower overall software
development costs of a project whilst also having positive effects on software
quality. However, maintenance costs can still be considerable and the less time
a company currently spends on manual testing, the more time is required before
positive, economic, ROI is reached after automation
Enablers and Impediments for Collaborative Research in Software Testing: An Empirical Exploration
When it comes to industrial organizations, current collaboration efforts in
software engineering research are very often kept in-house, depriving these
organizations off the skills necessary to build independent collaborative
research. The current trend, towards empirical software engineering research,
requires certain standards to be established which would guide these
collaborative efforts in creating a strong partnership that promotes
independent, evidence-based, software engineering research. This paper examines
key enabling factors for an efficient and effective industry-academia
collaboration in the software testing domain. A major finding of the research
was that while technology is a strong enabler to better collaboration, it must
be complemented with industrial openness to disclose research results and the
use of a dedicated tooling platform. We use as an example an automated test
generation approach that has been developed in the last two years
collaboratively with Bombardier Transportation AB in Sweden
Visualizing test diversity to support test optimisation
Diversity has been used as an effective criteria to optimise test suites for
cost-effective testing. Particularly, diversity-based (alternatively referred
to as similarity-based) techniques have the benefit of being generic and
applicable across different Systems Under Test (SUT), and have been used to
automatically select or prioritise large sets of test cases. However, it is a
challenge to feedback diversity information to developers and testers since
results are typically many-dimensional. Furthermore, the generality of
diversity-based approaches makes it harder to choose when and where to apply
them. In this paper we address these challenges by investigating: i) what are
the trade-off in using different sources of diversity (e.g., diversity of test
requirements or test scripts) to optimise large test suites, and ii) how
visualisation of test diversity data can assist testers for test optimisation
and improvement. We perform a case study on three industrial projects and
present quantitative results on the fault detection capabilities and redundancy
levels of different sets of test cases. Our key result is that test similarity
maps, based on pair-wise diversity calculations, helped industrial
practitioners identify issues with their test repositories and decide on
actions to improve. We conclude that the visualisation of diversity information
can assist testers in their maintenance and optimisation activities
Mutation testing on an object-oriented framework: An experience report

The increasing presence of Object-Oriented (OO) programs in industrial systems is progressively drawing the attention of mutation researchers toward this paradigm. However, while the number of research contributions in this topic is plentiful, the number of empirical results is still marginal and mostly provided by researchers rather than practitioners.
Objective
This article reports our experience using mutation testing to measure the effectiveness of an automated test data generator from a user perspective.
Method
In our study, we applied both traditional and class-level mutation operators to FaMa, an open source Java framework currently being used for research and commercial purposes. We also compared and contrasted our results with the data obtained from some motivating faults found in the literature and two real tools for the analysis of feature models, FaMa and SPLOT.
Results
Our results are summarized in a number of lessons learned supporting previous isolated results as well as new findings that hopefully will motivate further research in the field.
Conclusion
We conclude that mutation testing is an effective and affordable technique to measure the effectiveness of test mechanisms in OO systems. We found, however, several practical limitations in current tool support that should be addressed to facilitate the work of testers. Shingle 2.0: generalising self-consistent and automated domain discretisation for multi-scale geophysical models
The approaches taken to describe and develop spatial discretisations of the
domains required for geophysical simulation models are commonly ad hoc, model
or application specific and under-documented. This is particularly acute for
simulation models that are flexible in their use of multi-scale, anisotropic,
fully unstructured meshes where a relatively large number of heterogeneous
parameters are required to constrain their full description. As a consequence,
it can be difficult to reproduce simulations, ensure a provenance in model data
handling and initialisation, and a challenge to conduct model intercomparisons
rigorously. This paper takes a novel approach to spatial discretisation,
considering it much like a numerical simulation model problem of its own. It
introduces a generalised, extensible, self-documenting approach to carefully
describe, and necessarily fully, the constraints over the heterogeneous
parameter space that determine how a domain is spatially discretised. This
additionally provides a method to accurately record these constraints, using
high-level natural language based abstractions, that enables full accounts of
provenance, sharing and distribution. Together with this description, a
generalised consistent approach to unstructured mesh generation for geophysical
models is developed, that is automated, robust and repeatable, quick-to-draft,
rigorously verified and consistent to the source data throughout. This
interprets the description above to execute a self-consistent spatial
discretisation process, which is automatically validated to expected discrete

An Exploratory Study of Forces and Frictions affecting Large-Scale Model-Driven Development
In this paper, we investigate model-driven engineering, reporting on an
exploratory case-study conducted at a large automotive company. The study
consisted of interviews with 20 engineers and managers working in different
roles. We found that, in the context of a large organization, contextual forces
dominate the cognitive issues of using model-driven technology. The four forces
we identified that are likely independent of the particular abstractions chosen
as the basis of software development are the need for diffing in software
product lines, the needs for problem-specific languages and types, the need for
live modeling in exploratory activities, and the need for point-to-point
traceability between artifacts. We also identified triggers of accidental
complexity, which we refer to as points of friction introduced by languages and
tools. Examples of the friction points identified are insufficient support for
