    Archetypal games generate diverse models of power, conflict, and cooperation

    Interdependence takes many forms. We show how three patterns of power generate diverse models for understanding dynamics and transformations in social-ecological systems. Archetypal games trace pathways that go beyond a focus on a few social dilemmas to recognize and understand diversity and complexity in a landscape of social situations, including families of coordination and defection problems. We apply the extended topology of two-person two-choice (2 × 2) games to derive simple archetypes of interdependence that generate models with overlapping opportunities and challenges for collective action. Simplifying payoff matrices by equalizing outcome ranks (making ties to show indifference among outcomes) yields three archetypal games that are ordinally equivalent to payoff structures for independence, coordination, and exchange, as identified by interdependence theory in social psychology. These three symmetric patterns of power combine to make an asymmetric archetype for zero-sum conflict and further structures of power and dependence. Differentiating the ranking of outcomes (breaking ties) transforms these primal archetypes into more complex configurations, including intermediate archetypes for synergy, compromise, convention, rivalry, and advantage. Archetypal models of interdependence, and the pathways through which they generate diverse situations, could help to understand institutional diversity and potential transformations in social-ecological systems, to distinguish between convergent and divergent collective action problems for organizations, and to clarify elementary patterns of power in governance

    A Neoclassical Realist’s Analysis Of Sino-U.S. Space Policy

    During the Cold War, the United States focused its collective policy acumen on forming a competitive, actor-specific strategy to gain advantage over the Soviet Union. The fragmentation of the Soviet Union resulted in a multi-polar geopolitical environment lacking a near-peer rival for the United States. Overwhelming soft and hard power advantages allowed American policy makers to peruse a general, non-actor specific strategy to maintain its hegemonic position. However, the meteoric rise of China as a near-peer competitor in East Asia has challenged this paradigm. In order to maintain its competitive advantage, or at the very least ensure the safety of its geopolitical objectives through encouraging benign competition, U.S. strategy needs to evolve in both focus and complexity. It is essential for Spacepower, as a key element of national power, to be included in this evolution. In order to do so, this analysis will examine Sino-U.S. space relations using neoclassical realism as a baseline methodology. First, structural elements of the Sino-U.S. relationship will be modeled in a semi-quantitative game theoretical framework, using relative economic and military capabilities as primary independent variables. Second, key assumptions will be tested to ensure that this model accurately represents the current geopolitical environment. Third, the decision making apparatuses of the United States and China will be examined as intervening variables. This will account for imperfect rationality and how it modifies the game theoretical framework. Fourth, this framework will be used to present actionable space policy recommendations for the United States so that space can be incorporated into a competitive strategy for East Asia

    Il riconoscimento di oggetti è sempre stato un compito sfidante per la Computer Vision. Trova applicazione in molti campi, principalmente nell’industria, come ad esempio per permettere ad un robot di trovare gli oggetti da afferrare. Negli ultimi decenni tali compiti hanno trovato nuovi modi di essere raggiunti grazie alla riscoperta delle Reti Neurali, in particolare le Reti Neurali Convoluzionali. Questo tipo di reti ha raggiunto ottimi risultati in molte applicazioni per il riconoscimento e la classificazione degli oggetti. La tendenza, ora, `e quella di utilizzare tali reti anche nell’industria automobilistica per cercare di rendere reale il sogno delle automobili che guidano da sole. Ci sono molti lavori importanti sul riconoscimento delle auto dalle immagini. In questa tesi presentiamo la nostra architettura di Rete Neurale Convoluzionale per il riconoscimento di automobili e la loro posizione nello spazio, utilizzando solo input lidar. Salvando le informazioni riguardanti le bounding box attorno all’auto a livello del punto ci assicura una buona previsione anche in situazioni in cui le automobili sono occluse. I test vengono eseguiti sul dataset più utilizzato per il riconoscimento di automobili e pedoni nelle applicazioni di guida autonoma

    The structure and dynamics of multilayer networks

    In the past years, network theory has successfully characterized the interaction among the constituents of a variety of complex systems, ranging from biological to technological, and social systems. However, up until recently, attention was almost exclusively given to networks in which all components were treated on equivalent footing, while neglecting all the extra information about the temporal- or context-related properties of the interactions under study. Only in the last years, taking advantage of the enhanced resolution in real data sets, network scientists have directed their interest to the multiplex character of real-world systems, and explicitly considered the time-varying and multilayer nature of networks. We offer here a comprehensive review on both structural and dynamical organization of graphs made of diverse relationships (layers) between its constituents, and cover several relevant issues, from a full redefinition of the basic structural measures, to understanding how the multilayer nature of the network affects processes and dynamics.Comment: In Press, Accepted Manuscript, Physics Reports 201
