    Exploiting Hardware Abstraction for Parallel Programming Framework: Platform and Multitasking

    With the help of the parallelism provided by the fine-grained architecture, hardware accelerators on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) can significantly improve the performance of many applications. However, designers are required to have excellent hardware programming skills and unique optimization techniques to explore the potential of FPGA resources fully. Intermediate frameworks above hardware circuits are proposed to improve either performance or productivity by leveraging parallel programming models beyond the multi-core era. In this work, we propose the PolyPC (Polymorphic Parallel Computing) framework, which targets enhancing productivity without losing performance. It helps designers develop parallelized applications and implement them on FPGAs. The PolyPC framework implements a custom hardware platform, on which programs written in an OpenCL-like programming model can launch. Additionally, the PolyPC framework extends vendor-provided tools to provide a complete development environment including intermediate software framework, and automatic system builders. Designers\u27 programs can be either synthesized as hardware processing elements (PEs) or compiled to executable files running on software PEs. Benefiting from nontrivial features of re-loadable PEs, and independent group-level schedulers, the multitasking is enabled for both software and hardware PEs to improve the efficiency of utilizing hardware resources. The PolyPC framework is evaluated regarding performance, area efficiency, and multitasking. The results show a maximum 66 times speedup over a dual-core ARM processor and 1043 times speedup over a high-performance MicroBlaze with 125 times of area efficiency. It delivers a significant improvement in response time to high-priority tasks with the priority-aware scheduling. Overheads of multitasking are evaluated to analyze trade-offs. With the help of the design flow, the OpenCL application programs are converted into executables through the front-end source-to-source transformation and back-end synthesis/compilation to run on PEs, and the framework is generated from users\u27 specifications

    Benchmarking optimization algorithms for auto-tuning GPU kernels

    Recent years have witnessed phenomenal growth in the application, and capabilities of Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) due to their high parallel computation power at relatively low cost. However, writing a computationally efficient GPU program (kernel) is challenging, and generally only certain specific kernel configurations lead to significant increases in performance. Auto-tuning is the process of automatically optimizing software for highly-efficient execution on a target hardware platform. Auto-tuning is particularly useful for GPU programming, as a single kernel requires re-tuning after code changes, for different input data, and for different architectures. However, the discrete, and non-convex nature of the search space creates a challenging optimization problem. In this work, we investigate which algorithm produces the fastest kernels if the time-budget for the tuning task is varied. We conduct a survey by performing experiments on 26 different kernel spaces, from 9 different GPUs, for 16 different evolutionary black-box optimization algorithms. We then analyze these results and introduce a novel metric based on the PageRank centrality concept as a tool for gaining insight into the difficulty of the optimization problem.     Productive Programming Systems for Heterogeneous Supercomputers

    The majority of today's scientific and data analytics workloads are still run on relatively energy inefficient, heavyweight, general-purpose processing cores, often referred to in the literature as latency-oriented architectures. The flexibility of these architectures and the programmer aids included (e.g. large and deep cache hierarchies, branch prediction logic, pre-fetch logic) makes them flexible enough to run a wide range of applications fast. However, we have started to see growth in the use of lightweight, simpler, energy-efficient, and functionally constrained cores. These architectures are commonly referred to as throughput-oriented. Within each shared memory node, the computational backbone of future throughput-oriented HPC machines will consist of large pools of lightweight cores. The first wave of throughput-oriented computing came in the mid 2000's with the use of GPUs for general-purpose and scientific computing. Today we are entering the second wave of throughput-oriented computing, with the introduction of NVIDIA Pascal GPUs, Intel Knights Landing Xeon Phi processors, the Epiphany Co-Processor, the Sunway MPP, and other throughput-oriented architectures that enable pre-exascale computing. However, while the majority of the FLOPS in designs for future HPC systems come from throughput-oriented architectures, they are still commonly paired with latency-oriented cores which handle management functions and lightweight/un-parallelizable computational kernels. Hence, most future HPC machines will be heterogeneous in their processing cores. However, the heterogeneity of future machines will not be limited to the processing elements. Indeed, heterogeneity will also exist in the storage, networking, memory, and software stacks of future supercomputers. As a result, it will be necessary to combine many different programming models and libraries in a single application. How to do so in a programmable and well-performing manner is an open research question. This thesis addresses this question using two approaches. First, we explore using managed runtimes on HPC platforms. As a result of their high-level programming models, these managed runtimes have a long history of supporting data analytics workloads on commodity hardware, but often come with overheads which make them less common in the HPC domain. Managed runtimes are also not supported natively on throughput-oriented architectures. Second, we explore the use of a modular programming model and work-stealing runtime to compose the programming and scheduling of multiple third-party HPC libraries. This approach leverages existing investment in HPC libraries, unifies the scheduling of work on a platform, and is designed to quickly support new programming model and runtime extensions. In support of these two approaches, this thesis also makes novel contributions in tooling for future supercomputers. We demonstrate the value of checkpoints as a software development tool on current and future HPC machines, and present novel techniques in performance prediction across heterogeneous cores

    Languages and Compilers for Writing Efficient High-Performance Computing Applications

    Many everyday applications, such as web search, speech recognition, and weather prediction, are executed on high-performance systems containing thousands of Central Processing Units (CPUs) and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). These applications can be written in either low-level programming languages, such as NVIDIA CUDA, or domain specific languages, like Halide for image processing and PyTorch for machine learning programs. Despite the popularity of these languages, there are several challenges that programmers face when developing efficient high-performance computing applications. First, since every hardware support a different low-level programming model, to utilize new hardware programmers need to rewrite their applications in another programming language. Second, writing efficient code involves restructuring the computation to ensure (i) regular memory access patterns, (ii) non-divergent control flow, and (iii) complete utilization of different programmer managed caches. Furthermore, since these low-level optimizations are known only to hardware experts, it is difficult for a domain expert to write optimized code for new computations. Third, existing domain specific languages suffer from optimization barriers in the language constructs that prevent new optimizations and hence, these languages provide sub-optimal performance. To address these challenges this thesis presents the following novel abstractions and compiler techniques for writing image processing and machine learning applications that can run efficiently on a variety of high-performance systems. First, this thesis presents techniques to optimize image processing programs on GPUs using the features of modern GPUs. These techniques improve the concurrency and register usage of generated code to provide better performance than the state-of-the-art. Second, this thesis presents NextDoor, which is the first system to provide an abstraction for writing graph sampling applications and efficiently executing these applications on GPUs. Third, this thesis presents CoCoNet, which is a domain specific language to co-optimize communication and computation in distributed machine learning workloads. By breaking the optimization barriers in existing domain specific languages, these techniques help programmers write correct and efficient code for diverse high-performance computing workloads

    Efficiently and Transparently Maintaining High SIMD Occupancy in the Presence of Wavefront Irregularity

    Demand is increasing for high throughput processing of irregular streaming applications; examples of such applications from scientific and engineering domains include biological sequence alignment, network packet filtering, automated face detection, and big graph algorithms. With wide SIMD, lightweight threads, and low-cost thread-context switching, wide-SIMD architectures such as GPUs allow considerable flexibility in the way application work is assigned to threads. However, irregular applications are challenging to map efficiently onto wide SIMD because data-dependent filtering or replication of items creates an unpredictable data wavefront of items ready for further processing. Straightforward implementations of irregular applications on a wide-SIMD architecture are prone to load imbalance and reduced occupancy, while more sophisticated implementations require advanced use of parallel GPU operations to redistribute work efficiently among threads. This dissertation will present strategies for addressing the performance challenges of wavefront- irregular applications on wide-SIMD architectures. These strategies are embodied in a developer framework called Mercator that (1) allows developers to map irregular applications onto GPUs ac- cording to the streaming paradigm while abstracting from low-level data movement and (2) includes generalized techniques for transparently overcoming the obstacles to high throughput presented by wavefront-irregular applications on a GPU. Mercator forms the centerpiece of this dissertation, and we present its motivation, performance model, implementation, and extensions in this work
