An Introduction to Retro Software Homebrew: Sustaining the Growth of an NES Homebrew Community Through Online Communication
In the modern computer age of information, the line between consumers and producers has become blurry. For some coding hobbyists and videogame fans there is no line. There are several online communities that develop and share “homebrew” software. Homebrew here refers to software developed for proprietary system by hobbyists. There\u27s no endorsement from the intellectual property holders. Homebrew is an understudied field in academia and heavily misunderstood by the mainstream. This report hopes to shine light on homebrewers and break the misunderstandings. It also strives to evaluate the quality of the user experience and documentation within homebrew communities and recommend improvements in their communications
Future of the Internet--and how to stop it
vi, 342 p. : ill. ; 25 cmLibro ElectrónicoOn January 9, 2007, Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone to an eager audience
crammed into San Francisco’s Moscone Center.1 A beautiful
and brilliantly engineered device, the iPhone blended three products
into one: an iPod, with the highest-quality screen Apple had ever produced;
a phone, with cleverly integrated functionality, such as voicemail
that came wrapped as separately accessible messages; and a device
to access the Internet, with a smart and elegant browser, and with
built-in map, weather, stock, and e-mail capabilities. It was a technical
and design triumph for Jobs, bringing the company into a market
with an extraordinary potential for growth, and pushing the industry
to a new level of competition in ways to connect us to each other and
to the Web.Includes bibliographical references (p. 249-328) and index

This dissertation wants to demonstrate the current situation of blind and visually impaired people with regard to deficits and need for action concerning technical devices. In preparation of this dissertation a survey among the target group was carried out. The evaluation as well as one detailed interview are one of its main components. This dissertation should lead to further considerations, developments and approaches in research in the area of computer sciences for visually impaired people. First of all the anatomy and function of the human eye are explained. Another focus is on the historical development of aids for blind or visually handicapped people as for instance on embossed printing or the insertion of DAISY standards to show their use and acceptance in society. In the following chapters problems of technical devices and their use in everyday life are examined. As the author of this dissertation is also visually impaired the pieces of information and results provided are based on or influenced by personal experiences. Furthermore technical innovations, e.g. touch screens and Augmented Reality (AR), are presented. On the one hand the author discusses current developments and future fields of applications; on the other hand he also alludes to the dangers of conflating reality and virtuality. Finally the results are summarized and new, thought-provoking impulses are provided for further developments

The Future of the Internet and How to Stop It
This extraordinary book explains the engine that has catapulted the Internet from backwater to ubiquity—and reveals that it is sputtering precisely because of its runaway success. With the unwitting help of its users, the generative Internet is on a path to a lockdown, ending its cycle of innovation—and facilitating unsettling new kinds of control.
IPods, iPhones, Xboxes, and TiVos represent the first wave of Internet-centered products that can’t be easily modified by anyone except their vendors or selected partners. These “tethered appliances” have already been used in remarkable but little-known ways: car GPS systems have been reconfigured at the demand of law enforcement to eavesdrop on the occupants at all times, and digital video recorders have been ordered to self-destruct thanks to a lawsuit against the manufacturer thousands of miles away. New Web 2.0 platforms like Google mash-ups and Facebook are rightly touted—but their applications can be similarly monitored and eliminated from a central source. As tethered appliances and applications eclipse the PC, the very nature of the Internet—its “generativity,” or innovative character—is at risk.
The Internet’s current trajectory is one of lost opportunity. Its salvation, Zittrain argues, lies in the hands of its millions of users. Drawing on generative technologies like Wikipedia that have so far survived their own successes, this book shows how to develop new technologies and social structures that allow users to work creatively and collaboratively, participate in solutions, and become true “netizens.” The author has made an online version of this work available under a Creative Commons

The Crisis of Language in Contemporary Japan: Reading, Writing, and New Technology
My dissertation is an ethnographically inspired theoretical exploration of the crises of reading and writing in contemporary Japan. Each of the five chapters examines concrete instances of reading and writing practices that have been problematized in recent decades. By calling attention to underlying moral assumptions, established sociocultural protocols, and socio-technological conditions of the everyday, I theorize the concept of embodied reading and writing thresholds. The scope of analysis is partly informed by popular discourse decrying a perceived decline in reading and writing proficiency among Japanese youth. This alleged failing literacy figures as a national crisis under the assumption that the futurity of children's national language proficiency metonymically correlates with the future well being of its national cultural body. In light of heightened interests in the past, present, and future of books, and a series of recent state interventions on the prospect of "national" text culture, it is my argument that ongoing tensions surrounding the changing media landscape and symbolic relations to the world do not merely reflect changes in styles of language, structures of spatiotemporal awareness, or forms of knowledge production. Rather, they indicate profound transformations and apprehensions among the lives mediated and embodied by the very system of signification that has come under scrutiny in the post-Lost Decade Japan (03/1991-01/2002). My dissertation offers an unique point of critical intervention into 1) various forms of tension arising from the overlapping media technologies and polarized population, 2) formations of reading and writing body (embodiment) at an intersection of heterogeneous elements and everyday disciplining, 3) culturally specific conditions and articulations of the effects of "universal" technologies, 4) prospects of "proper" national reading and writing culture, and 5) questions of cultural transformation and transmission. I hope that the diverse set of events explored in respective chapters provide, as a whole, a broader perspective of the institutional and technological background as well as an intimate understanding of culturally specific circumstances in Japan. Insofar as this is an attempt to conduct a nuanced inquiry into the culturally specific configurations and articulations of a global phenomenon, each ethnographic moment is carefully contextualized to reflect Japan specific conditions while avoiding the pitfall of culturalist assumptions. Understanding how an existing system of representation, technological imperatives and sociohistorical predicaments have coalesced to form a unique constellation is the first step in identifying how the practice of reading and writing becomes a site of heated national debate in Japan. Against theories that problematize the de-corporealizing effects of digital technology within reading and writing, I emphasize the material specificity of contemporary reading and writing practices
