Converting a CAD Model into a Manufacturing Model for the Components Made of a Multiphase Perfect Material
To manufacture the component made of a multiphase perfect material (including homogeneous
and multi heterogeneous materials), it CAD model should be processed and converted into
layered manufacturing model for further transformation of numerical control (NC) coding. This
paper develops its detailed approaches and corresponding software. The process planning is made
first and includes: (1) determining the build orientation of the component; and (2) slicing the
component into layers adaptively according to different material regions since different materials
have different optimal layer thickness for manufacturing. After the process planning, the layered
manufacturing models with necessary information, including fabrication sequence and material

SFF-Oriented Modeling and Process Planning of Functionally Graded Materials Using a Novel Equal Distance Offset Approach
This paper deals with the modeling and process planning of solid freeform fabrication
(SFF) of 3D functionally graded materials (FGMs). A novel approach of representation and
process planning of FGMs, termed as equal distance offset (EDO), is developed. In EDO, a
neutral arbitrary 3D CAD model is adaptively sliced into a series of 2D layers. Within each
layer, 2D material gradients are designed and represented via dividing the 2D shape into
several sub-regions enclosed by iso-composition contours. If needed, the material
composition gradient within each of sub-regions can be further determined by applying the
equal distance offset algorithm to each sub-region. Using this approach, an arbitrary-shaped
3D FGM object with linear or non-linear composition gradients can be represented and
fabricated via suitable SFF machines.Mechanical Engineerin
Multi-function based modeling of 3D heterogeneous wound scaffolds for improved wound healing
This paper presents a new multi-function based modeling of 3D heterogeneous porous wound scaffolds to improve wound healing process for complex deep acute or chronic wounds. An imaging-based approach is developed to extract 3D wound geometry and recognize wound features. Linear healing fashion of the wound margin towards the wound center is mimicked. Blending process is thus applied to the extracted geometry to partition the scaffold into a number of uniformly gradient healing regions. Computer models of 3D engineered porous wound scaffolds are then developed for solid freeform modeling and fabrication. Spatial variation over biomaterial and loaded bio-molecule concentration is developed based on wound healing requirements. Release of bio-molecules over the uniform healing regions is controlled by varying their amount and entrapping biomaterial concentration. Thus, localized controlled release is developed to improve wound healing. A prototype multi-syringe single nozzle deposition system is used to fabricate a sample scaffold. Specifications and Development of Interoperability Solution dedicated to Multiple Expertise Collaboration in a Design Framework
This paper describes the specifications of an interoperability platform based on the PPO (Product Process Organization) model developed by the French community IPPOP in the context of collaborative and innovative design. By using PPO model as a reference, this work aims to connect together heterogonous tools used by experts easing data and information exchanges. After underlining the growing needs of collaborative design process, this paper focuses on interoperability concept by describing current solutions and their limits. Then a solution based on the flexibility of the PPO model adapted to the philosophy of interoperability is proposed. To illustrate these concepts, several examples are more particularly described (robustness analysis, CAD and Product Lifecycle Management systems connections)
Methodology for automatic recovering of 3D partitions from unstitched faces of non-manifold CAD models
Data exchanges between different software are currently used in industry to speed up the preparation of digital prototypes for Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Unfortunately, due to data loss, the yield of the transfer of manifold models rarely reaches 1. In the case of non-manifold models, the transfer results are even less satisfactory. This is particularly true for partitioned 3D models: during the data transfer based on the well-known exchange formats, all 3D partitions are generally lost. Partitions are mainly used for preparing mesh models required for advanced FEA: mapped meshing, material separation, definition of specific boundary conditions, etc. This paper sets up a methodology to automatically recover 3D partitions from exported non-manifold CAD models in order to increase the yield of the data exchange. Our fully automatic approach is based on three steps. First, starting from a set of potentially disconnected faces, the CAD model is stitched. Then, the shells used to create the 3D partitions are recovered using an iterative propagation strategy which starts from the so-called manifold vertices. Finally, using the identified closed shells, the 3D partitions can be reconstructed. Integration, management and communication of heterogeneous design resources with WWW technologies
Recently, advanced information technologies have opened new pos-sibilities for collaborative designs. In this paper, a Web-based collaborative de-sign environment is proposed, where heterogeneous design applications can be integrated with a common interface, managed dynamically for publishing and searching, and communicated with each other for integrated multi-objective de-sign. The CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) is employed as an implementation tool to enable integration and communication of design application programs; and the XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is used as a common data descriptive language for data exchange between heterogeneous applications and for resource description and recording. This paper also intro-duces the implementation of the system and the encapsulating issues of existing legacy applications. At last, an example of gear design based on the system is il-lustrated to identify the methods and procedure developed by this research
