Stability of subdivision schemes
The stability of stationary interpolatory subdivision schemes for univariate data is investigated. If the subdivision scheme is linear, its stability follows from the convergence of the scheme, but for nonlinear subdivision schemes one needs stronger conditions and the stability analysis of nonlinear schemes is more involved. Apart from the fact that it is natural to demand that subdivision schemes are stable, it also has an advantage in a theoretical sense: is it shown that the approximation properties of stable schemes can very easily be determined
A tension approach to controlling the shape of cubic spline surfaces on FVS triangulations
We propose a parametric tensioned version of the FVS macro-element to control the shape of the composite surface and remove artificial oscillations, bumps and other undesired behaviour. In particular, this approach is applied to C1 cubic spline surfaces over a four-directional mesh produced by two-stage scattered data fitting methods
Monotonicity preserving approximation of multivariate scattered data
This paper describes a new method of monotone interpolation and smoothing of multivariate scattered data. It is based on the assumption that the function to be approximated is Lipschitz continuous. The method provides the optimal approximation in the worst case scenario and tight error bounds. Smoothing of noisy data subject to monotonicity constraints is converted into a quadratic programming problem. Estimation of the unknown Lipschitz constant from the data by sample splitting and cross-validation is described. Extension of the method for locally Lipschitz functions is presented.<br /

Area preservation in computational fluid dynamics
Incompressible two-dimensional flows such as the advection (Liouville)
equation and the Euler equations have a large family of conservation laws
related to conservation of area. We present two Eulerian numerical methods
which preserve a discrete analog of area. The first is a fully discrete model
based on a rearrangement of cells; the second is more conventional, but still
preserves the area within each contour of the vorticity field. Initial tests
indicate that both methods suppress the formation of spurious oscillations in
the field.Comment: 14 pages incl. 3 figure
A univariate rational quadratic trigonometric interpolating spline to visualize shaped data
This study was concerned with shape preserving interpolation of 2D data. A piecewise C1 univariate rational quadratic trigonometric spline including three positive parameters was devised to produce a shaped interpolant for given shaped data. Positive and monotone curve interpolation schemes were presented to sustain the respective shape features of data. Each scheme was tested for plentiful shaped data sets to substantiate the assertion made in their construction. Moreover, these schemes were compared with conventional shape preserving rational quadratic splines to demonstrate the usefulness of their construction
Piecewise polynomial monotonic interpolation of 2D gridded data
International audienceA method for interpolating monotone increasing 2D scalar data with a monotone piecewise cubic C-continuous surface is presented. Monotonicity is a sufficient condition for a function to be free of critical points inside its domain. The standard axial monotonicity for tensor-product surfaces is however too restrictive. We therefore introduce a more relaxed monotonicity constraint. We derive sufficient conditions on the partial derivatives of the interpolating function to ensure its monotonicity. We then develop two algorithms to effectively construct a monotone C surface composed of cubic triangular Bézier surfaces interpolating a monotone gridded data set. Our method enables to interpolate given topological data such as minima, maxima and saddle points at the corners of a rectangular domain without adding spurious extrema inside the function domain. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the performance of the algorithm
