Geovisualization Using HTML5 : a case study to improve animations of historical geographic data

To help the users well understand these data, a web mapping application called SEDD Map has been developed and tested. The previous version of SEDD Map is constructed using Silverlight plugin. It cannot run on most popular portable devices. As Hypertext Markup Languages (HTML) continue to develop, a recent version, HTML5, was published in 2012. It aims to support the latest multimedia formats and reduce the need for plugins. So, to improve the compatibility of SEDD Map, this work using HTML5 to developed a new version of SEDD Map. Before we constructed the new version of SEDD Map, a set of web mapping applications and programs were evaluated. From this evaluation and comparison, we found that SEDD Map could be improved in many area, such as improving the animation of historical geographic data. Animation is a useful tool when presenting historical data. The geographic data in SEDD Map are taken from four independent historical maps. To visualize geographic data as an animation, we need to create a time sense sequential dataset. In this study, we used linear interpolation and the four historical maps as start years and end years to simulate 159 maps to visualize the geographic data as animations. From this study, we found that: The commonly used web mapping applications for investigating demographic data contain functions, such as interactive visualization, statistical graphics, basic map tools, animations, etc; HTML5 can replace (and improve) the used of Silverlight for web mapping; Animations can be generated (filling in what is missing is to improve the data sets).The Scanian Economic-Demographic Database (SEDD) has been assembled by the Centre for Economic Demography (CED), Lund University. Open semantic annotation of scientific publications using DOMEO
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Our group has developed a useful shared software framework for performing, versioning, sharing and viewing Web annotations of a number of kinds, using an open representation model.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The Domeo Annotation Tool was developed in tandem with this open model, the Annotation Ontology (AO). Development of both the Annotation Framework and the open model was driven by requirements of several different types of alpha users, including bench scientists and biomedical curators from university research labs, online scientific communities, publishing and pharmaceutical companies.</p> <p>Several use cases were incrementally implemented by the toolkit. These use cases in biomedical communications include personal note-taking, group document annotation, semantic tagging, claim-evidence-context extraction, reagent tagging, and curation of textmining results from entity extraction algorithms.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We report on the Domeo user interface here. Domeo has been deployed in beta release as part of the NIH Neuroscience Information Framework (NIF, <url>http://www.neuinfo.org</url><it/>) and is scheduled for production deployment in the NIFâs next full release.</p> <p>Future papers will describe other aspects of this work in detail, including Annotation Framework Services and components for integrating with external textmining services, such as the NCBO Annotator web service, and with other textmining applications using the Apache UIMA framework.</p
Report of the Stanford Linked Data Workshop
The Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources (SULAIR) with the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) conducted at week-long workshop on the prospects for a large scale, multi-national, multi-institutional prototype of a Linked Data environment for discovery of and navigation among the rapidly, chaotically expanding array of academic information resources. As preparation for the workshop, CLIR sponsored a survey by Jerry Persons, Chief Information Architect emeritus of SULAIR that was published originally for workshop participants as background to the workshop and is now publicly available. The original intention of the workshop was to devise a plan for such a prototype. However, such was the diversity of knowledge, experience, and views of the potential of Linked Data approaches that the workshop participants turned to two more fundamental goals: building common understanding and enthusiasm on the one hand and identifying opportunities and challenges to be confronted in the preparation of the intended prototype and its operation on the other. In pursuit of those objectives, the workshop participants produced:1. a value statement addressing the question of why a Linked Data approach is worth prototyping;2. a manifesto for Linked Libraries (and Museums and Archives and âŠ);3. an outline of the phases in a life cycle of Linked Data approaches;4. a prioritized list of known issues in generating, harvesting & using Linked Data;5. a workflow with notes for converting library bibliographic records and other academic metadata to URIs;6. examples of potential âkiller appsâ using Linked Data: and7. a list of next steps and potential projects.This report includes a summary of the workshop agenda, a chart showing the use of Linked Data in cultural heritage venues, and short biographies and statements from each of the participants
GI Systems for public health with an ontology based approach

utilizing technologies for health is one of the emergent concepts in
several applied fields. Computer science, (geographic) information
systems are some of the interdisciplinary fields which motivates this
thesis.
Inspiring idea of the study is originated from a rhetorical disease
DbHd: Database Hugging Disorder, defined by Hans Rosling at
World Bank Open Data speech in May 2010. The cure of this disease
can be offered as linked open data, which contains ontologies for
health science, diseases, genes, drugs, GEO species etc. LOD-Linked
Open Data provides the systematic application of information by
publishing and connecting structured data on the Web.
In the context of this study we aimed to reduce boundaries
between semantic web and geo web. For this reason a use case data is
studied from Valencia CSISP- Research Center of Public Health in
which the mortality rates for particular diseases are represented
spatio-temporally. Use case data is divided into three conceptual
domains (health, spatial, statistical), enhanced with semantic relations
and descriptions by following Linked Data Principles. Finally in order
to convey complex health-related information, we offer an
infrastructure integrating geo web and semantic web. Based on the
established outcome, user access methods are introduced and future
researches/studies are outlined
Web-based applications for open display networks : developersâ perspective
Open Display Networks represent a new paradigm for large scale networks of public displays that are open to applications and content from third parties. Web technologies may be particularly interesting as a technological framework for third-party application development in Open Display Networks because
of their portability and widespread use. However, there are also significant challenges involved that result from the specificities of this particular usage domain and the lack of specific development insights for this context. In this work, we address the concept of public display application (display app) from a development perspective. The overall goal of this paper is to identify and characterize some of the key specificities of display applications and the appropriate Web solutions that can serve in the development of this type of application. The contribution of this paper builds on our extensive experience with the application development for a real world public display infrastructure and also on a short-term experiment with third party developers. Overall, the results show that Web technologies are valuable building blocks for public displays applications and their adoption is not only a subject for adaptation procedures but also for redesigning their use according to the characteristics and user experience offered by public displays. This research will inform the design of new Web-based models of display applications and shed light on the challenges that may impede third party development and the evolution of an application ecosystem in this area.Fundação para a CiĂȘncia e a Tecnologia (FCT
ZoomAzores project: implementation of a WebGIS for Nature and Adventure Tourism.

This creates new ways and tools that can be used to make available tourist information and promotion of these destinations. The main objective this work is to develop a Web application for the ZoomAzores project. This web application uses dynamic maps and user-generated content features, which are focused on make available useful information for the tourist and the promotion of Nature and Adventure Tourism (NAT) in the archipelago of Azores. The solutions encountered were always determined by the technologies used and from the point of view of tourists visiting the Azores, which frequently doesnât know about the Azores territory. The ZoomAzores Web application has Geographic Information System (GIS) visualization and navigation capabilities on the Internet, turning it into a WebGIS. It also encompasses the principles of Web 2.0 providing functionalities such as the generation of contents by users. The existing link between the use of dynamic maps and Web 2.0 in the tourism promotion and travel planning tasks seems to be a solid reality putting up new opportunities for the business in tourism.In this work, the development of the ZoomAzores WebGIS is based on the use of
Open Standards (OS) and Free Open Source Software (FOSS). The use of OS is a key to
the development of a WebGIS application able to interoperate with other systems and then
use and consume Web Services (WS) that other systems can offer, concurrently enriching
the data sources used. The FOSS technologies allow creates a more low cost solution
without licensing cost software. This document exposes some design aspects in the system
development and describes some functional and architectural features about the WebGIS
ZoomAzores
Geospatial Semantics
Geospatial semantics is a broad field that involves a variety of research
areas. The term semantics refers to the meaning of things, and is in contrast
with the term syntactics. Accordingly, studies on geospatial semantics usually
focus on understanding the meaning of geographic entities as well as their
counterparts in the cognitive and digital world, such as cognitive geographic
concepts and digital gazetteers. Geospatial semantics can also facilitate the
design of geographic information systems (GIS) by enhancing the
interoperability of distributed systems and developing more intelligent
interfaces for user interactions. During the past years, a lot of research has
been conducted, approaching geospatial semantics from different perspectives,
using a variety of methods, and targeting different problems. Meanwhile, the
arrival of big geo data, especially the large amount of unstructured text data
on the Web, and the fast development of natural language processing methods
enable new research directions in geospatial semantics. This chapter,
therefore, provides a systematic review on the existing geospatial semantic
research. Six major research areas are identified and discussed, including
semantic interoperability, digital gazetteers, geographic information
retrieval, geospatial Semantic Web, place semantics, and cognitive geographic

Innovative Tools and Methods Using BIM for an Efficient Renovation in Buildings
This open access book describes a BIM-based toolkit that has been developed according to the latest research activities on building information modelling and semantic interoperability to optimize the building process. It highlights the impacts of using such new tools to fast renovation activities starting from the decision-making and design stages to the construction site management with the possibility to monitor occupants' and ownersâ feedback during the realization process. In this process, a framework has been developed and implemented to allow stakeholders involved in a renovation project to efficiently compile, maintain, and add data about (i) building elements, (ii) building services systems, (iii) tenants, operators, and owners of the building, and (iv) current and predicted performance of the building from the various data sources available. The framework applies and specializes the existing practices in the Semantic Web, Linked Data, and ontology domain to the management of renovation projects. It has been designed to be open so that any system which implements the required functions and uses the specified conventions will be able to achieve semantic interoperability with other framework-compliant systems in the renovation domain. Finally, this book represents the validation process of the toolkit that has been held in three demo sites: a social housing building in Italy and two private residential buildings in Poland and Finland. The outcome shows that the toolkit facilitates the renovation process with relevant reductions of time, costs, and energy consumption and that the inhabitants can take advantage of the increase in building performances, quality, and comfort
Knowledge Components and Methods for Policy Propagation in Data Flows
Data-oriented systems and applications are at the centre of current developments of the World Wide Web (WWW). On the Web of Data (WoD), information sources can be accessed and processed for many purposes. Users need to be aware of any licences or terms of use, which are associated with the data sources they want to use. Conversely, publishers need support in assigning the appropriate policies alongside the data they distribute.
In this work, we tackle the problem of policy propagation in data flows - an expression that refers to the way data is consumed, manipulated and produced within processes. We pose the question of what kind of components are required, and how they can be acquired, managed, and deployed, to support users on deciding what policies propagate to the output of a data-intensive system from the ones associated with its input. We observe three scenarios: applications of the Semantic Web, workflow reuse in Open Science, and the exploitation of urban data in City Data Hubs. Starting from the analysis of Semantic Web applications, we propose a data-centric approach to semantically describe processes as data flows: the Datanode ontology, which comprises a hierarchy of the possible relations between data objects. By means of Policy Propagation Rules, it is possible to link data flow steps and policies derivable from semantic descriptions of data licences. We show how these components can be designed, how they can be effectively managed, and how to reason efficiently with them. In a second phase, the developed components are verified using a Smart City Data Hub as a case study, where we developed an end-to-end solution for policy propagation. Finally, we evaluate our approach and report on a user study aimed at assessing both the quality and the value of the proposed solution
