Enterprise Composition Architecture for Micro-Granular Digital Services and Products
The digitization of our society changes the way we live, work, learn, communicate, and collaborate. This defines the strategical context for composing resilient enterprise architectures for micro-granular digital services and products. The change from a closed-world modeling perspective to more flexible open-world composition and evolution of system architectures defines the moving context for adaptable systems, which are essential to enable the digital transformation. Enterprises are presently transforming their strategy and culture together with their processes and information systems to become more digital. The digital transformation deeply disrupts existing enterprises and economies. Since years a lot of new business opportunities appeared using the potential of the Internet and related digital technologies, like Internet of Things, services computing, cloud computing, big data with analytics, mobile systems, collaboration networks, and cyber physical systems. Digitization fosters the development of IT systems with many rather small and distributed structures, like Internet of Things or mobile systems. In this paper, we are focusing on the continuous bottom-up integration of micro-granular architectures for a huge amount of dynamically growing systems and services, like Internet of Things and Microservices, as part of a new digital enterprise architecture. To integrate micro-granular architecture models to living architectural model versions we are extending more traditional enterprise architecture reference models with state of art elements for agile architectural engineering to support the digitalization of services with related products, and their processes
Real-Time Context-Aware Microservice Architecture for Predictive Analytics and Smart Decision-Making
The impressive evolution of the Internet of Things and the great amount of data flowing through the systems provide us with an inspiring scenario for Big Data analytics and advantageous real-time context-aware predictions and smart decision-making. However, this requires a scalable system for constant streaming processing, also provided with the ability of decision-making and action taking based on the performed predictions. This paper aims at proposing a scalable architecture to provide real-time context-aware actions based on predictive streaming processing of data as an evolution of a previously provided event-driven service-oriented architecture which already permitted the context-aware detection and notification of relevant data. For this purpose, we have defined and implemented a microservice-based architecture which provides real-time context-aware actions based on predictive streaming processing of data. As a result, our architecture has been enhanced twofold: on the one hand, the architecture has been supplied with reliable predictions through the use of predictive analytics and complex event processing techniques, which permit the notification of relevant context-aware information ahead of time. On the other, it has been refactored towards a microservice architecture pattern, highly improving its maintenance and evolution. The architecture performance has been evaluated with an air quality case study
A Hybrid Approach for Data Analytics for Internet of Things
The vision of the Internet of Things is to allow currently unconnected
physical objects to be connected to the internet. There will be an extremely
large number of internet connected devices that will be much more than the
number of human being in the world all producing data. These data will be
collected and delivered to the cloud for processing, especially with a view of
finding meaningful information to then take action. However, ideally the data
needs to be analysed locally to increase privacy, give quick responses to
people and to reduce use of network and storage resources. To tackle these
problems, distributed data analytics can be proposed to collect and analyse the
data either in the edge or fog devices. In this paper, we explore a hybrid
approach which means that both innetwork level and cloud level processing
should work together to build effective IoT data analytics in order to overcome
their respective weaknesses and use their specific strengths. Specifically, we
collected raw data locally and extracted features by applying data fusion
techniques on the data on resource constrained devices to reduce the data and
then send the extracted features to the cloud for processing. We evaluated the
accuracy and data consumption over network and thus show that it is feasible to
increase privacy and maintain accuracy while reducing data communication
demands.Comment: Accepted to be published in the Proceedings of the 7th ACM

Investigating IoT Middleware Platforms for Smart Application Development
With the growing number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the data
generated through these devices is also increasing. By 2030, it is been
predicted that the number of IoT devices will exceed the number of human beings
on earth. This gives rise to the requirement of middleware platform that can
manage IoT devices, intelligently store and process gigantic data generated for
building smart applications such as Smart Cities, Smart Healthcare, Smart
Industry, and others. At present, market is overwhelming with the number of IoT
middleware platforms with specific features. This raises one of the most
serious and least discussed challenge for application developer to choose
suitable platform for their application development. Across the literature,
very little attempt is done in classifying or comparing IoT middleware
platforms for the applications. This paper categorizes IoT platforms into four
categories namely-publicly traded, open source, developer friendly and
end-to-end connectivity. Some of the popular middleware platforms in each
category are investigated based on general IoT architecture. Comparison of IoT
middleware platforms in each category, based on basic, sensing, communication
and application development features is presented. This study can be useful for
IoT application developers to select the most appropriate platform according to
their application requirement
Medical data processing and analysis for remote health and activities monitoring
Recent developments in sensor technology, wearable computing, Internet of Things (IoT), and wireless communication have given rise to research in ubiquitous healthcare and remote monitoring of human\u2019s health and activities. Health monitoring systems involve processing and analysis of data retrieved from smartphones, smart watches, smart bracelets, as well as various sensors and wearable devices. Such systems enable continuous monitoring of patients psychological and health conditions by sensing and transmitting measurements such as heart rate, electrocardiogram, body temperature, respiratory rate, chest sounds, or blood pressure. Pervasive healthcare, as a relevant application domain in this context, aims at revolutionizing the delivery of medical services through a medical assistive environment and facilitates the independent living of patients. In this chapter, we discuss (1) data collection, fusion, ownership and privacy issues; (2) models, technologies and solutions for medical data processing and analysis; (3) big medical data analytics for remote health monitoring; (4) research challenges and opportunities in medical data analytics; (5) examples of case studies and practical solutions
