Parallel Interference Cancellation Based Turbo Space-Time Equalization in the SDMA Uplink
A novel Parallel Interference Cancellation (PIC) based turbo Space Time Equalizer (STE) structure designed for multiple antenna assisted uplink receivers is introduced. The proposed receiver structure allows the employment of non-linear type of detectors such as the Bayesian Decision Feedback (DF) assisted turbo STE or the Maximum Aposteriori (MAP) STE, while operating at a moderate computational cost. Receivers based on the proposed structure outperform the linear turbo detector benchmarker based on the Minimum Mean-Squared Error (MMSE) criterion, even if the latter aims for jointly detecting all transmitters’ signals. Additionally the PIC based receiver is capable of equalizing non-linear binary pre-coded channels. The performance difference between the presented algorithms is discussed using Extrinsic Information Transferfunction (EXIT) charts. Index Terms—PIC, EXIT chart, precoding, Bayesian, STE
Decision Feedback Aided Bayesian Turbo Space-Time Equalizer for Parallel Interference Cancellation in SDMA Systems
A novel Bayesian Decision-Feedback aided turbo Space-Time Equalizer (DF-STE) combined with a Parallel Interference Cancellation (PIC) scheme and designed for multiple antenna assisted receivers is introduced. The proposed receiver structure allows the employment of a non-linear Bayesian turbo DF-STE operating at a moderate computational cost, which outperforms the linear turbo detector benchmarker based on the Minimum Mean-Squared Error (MMSE) criterion, even if the latter aims for jointly detecting all transmitters’ signals
MIMO-aided near-capacity turbo transceivers: taxonomy and performance versus complexity
In this treatise, we firstly review the associated Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system theory and review the family of hard-decision and soft-decision based detection algorithms in the context of Spatial Division Multiplexing (SDM) systems. Our discussions culminate in the introduction of a range of powerful novel MIMO detectors, such as for example Markov Chain assisted Minimum Bit-Error Rate (MC-MBER) detectors, which are capable of reliably operating in the challenging high-importance rank-deficient scenarios, where there are more transmitters than receivers and hence the resultant channel-matrix becomes non-invertible. As a result, conventional detectors would exhibit a high residual error floor. We then invoke the Soft-Input Soft-Output (SISO) MIMO detectors for creating turbo-detected two- or three-stage concatenated SDM schemes and investigate their attainable performance in the light of their computational complexity. Finally, we introduce the powerful design tools of EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT)-charts and characterize the achievable performance of the diverse near- capacity SISO detectors with the aid of EXIT charts
Turbo EP-based Equalization: a Filter-Type Implementation

We propose a novel filter-type equalizer to improve the solution of the
linear minimum-mean squared-error (LMMSE) turbo equalizer, with computational
complexity constrained to be quadratic in the filter length. When high-order
modulations and/or large memory channels are used the optimal BCJR equalizer is
unavailable, due to its computational complexity. In this scenario, the
filter-type LMMSE turbo equalization exhibits a good performance compared to
other approximations. In this paper, we show that this solution can be
significantly improved by using expectation propagation (EP) in the estimation
of the a posteriori probabilities. First, it yields a more accurate estimation
of the extrinsic distribution to be sent to the channel decoder. Second,
compared to other solutions based on EP the computational complexity of the
proposed solution is constrained to be quadratic in the length of the finite
impulse response (FIR). In addition, we review previous EP-based turbo
equalization implementations. Instead of considering default uniform priors we
exploit the outputs of the decoder. Some simulation results are included to
show that this new EP-based filter remarkably outperforms the turbo approach of
previous versions of the EP algorithm and also improves the LMMSE solution,
with and without turbo equalization
Radial Basis Function Aided Space-Time Equalization in Dispersive Fading Uplink Environments
A novel Radial Basis Function Network (RBFN) assisted Decision-Feedback aided Space-Time Equalizer (DF-STE) designed for receivers employing multiple antennas is proposed. The Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of the RBFN aided DF-STE is evaluated when communicating over correlated Rayleigh fading channels, whose Channel Impulse Response (CIR) is estimated using a Kalman filtering based channel estimator. The proposed receiver structure outperforms the linear Minimum Mean-Squared Error benchmarker and it is less sensitive to both error propagation and channel estimation errors
Iterative Joint Channel Estimation and Multi-User Detection for Multiple-Antenna Aided OFDM Systems
Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems have recently attracted substantial research interest. However, compared to Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) systems, channel estimation in the MIMO scenario becomes more challenging, owing to the increased number of independent transmitter-receiver links to be estimated. In the context of the Bell LAyered Space-Time architecture (BLAST) or Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) multi-user MIMO OFDM systems, none of the known channel estimation techniques allows the number of users to be higher than the number of receiver antennas, which is often referred to as a “rank-deficient” scenario, owing to the constraint imposed by the rank of the MIMO channel matrix. Against this background, in this paper we propose a new Genetic Algorithm (GA) assisted iterative Joint Channel Estimation and Multi-User Detection (GA-JCEMUD) approach for multi-user MIMO SDMA-OFDM systems, which provides an effective solution to the multi-user MIMO channel estimation problem in the above-mentioned rank-deficient scenario. Furthermore, the GAs invoked in the data detection literature can only provide a hard-decision output for the Forward Error Correction (FEC) or channel decoder, which inevitably limits the system’s achievable performance. By contrast, our proposed GA is capable of providing “soft” outputs and hence it becomes capable of achieving an improved performance with the aid of FEC decoders. A range of simulation results are provided to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme. Low-Complexity Detection/Equalization in Large-Dimension MIMO-ISI Channels Using Graphical Models
In this paper, we deal with low-complexity near-optimal
detection/equalization in large-dimension multiple-input multiple-output
inter-symbol interference (MIMO-ISI) channels using message passing on
graphical models. A key contribution in the paper is the demonstration that
near-optimal performance in MIMO-ISI channels with large dimensions can be
achieved at low complexities through simple yet effective
simplifications/approximations, although the graphical models that represent
MIMO-ISI channels are fully/densely connected (loopy graphs). These include 1)
use of Markov Random Field (MRF) based graphical model with pairwise
interaction, in conjunction with {\em message/belief damping}, and 2) use of
Factor Graph (FG) based graphical model with {\em Gaussian approximation of
interference} (GAI). The per-symbol complexities are and
for the MRF and the FG with GAI approaches, respectively, where
and denote the number of channel uses per frame, and number of transmit
antennas, respectively. These low-complexities are quite attractive for large
dimensions, i.e., for large . From a performance perspective, these
algorithms are even more interesting in large-dimensions since they achieve
increasingly closer to optimum detection performance for increasing .
Also, we show that these message passing algorithms can be used in an iterative
manner with local neighborhood search algorithms to improve the
reliability/performance of -QAM symbol detection
