    Genetic Programming for Smart Phone Personalisation

    Personalisation in smart phones requires adaptability to dynamic context based on user mobility, application usage and sensor inputs. Current personalisation approaches, which rely on static logic that is developed a priori, do not provide sufficient adaptability to dynamic and unexpected context. This paper proposes genetic programming (GP), which can evolve program logic in realtime, as an online learning method to deal with the highly dynamic context in smart phone personalisation. We introduce the concept of collaborative smart phone personalisation through the GP Island Model, in order to exploit shared context among co-located phone users and reduce convergence time. We implement these concepts on real smartphones to demonstrate the capability of personalisation through GP and to explore the benefits of the Island Model. Our empirical evaluations on two example applications confirm that the Island Model can reduce convergence time by up to two-thirds over standalone GP personalisation.Comment: 43 pages, 11 figure

    OSCAR: A Collaborative Bandwidth Aggregation System

    The exponential increase in mobile data demand, coupled with growing user expectation to be connected in all places at all times, have introduced novel challenges for researchers to address. Fortunately, the wide spread deployment of various network technologies and the increased adoption of multi-interface enabled devices have enabled researchers to develop solutions for those challenges. Such solutions aim to exploit available interfaces on such devices in both solitary and collaborative forms. These solutions, however, have faced a steep deployment barrier. In this paper, we present OSCAR, a multi-objective, incentive-based, collaborative, and deployable bandwidth aggregation system. We present the OSCAR architecture that does not introduce any intermediate hardware nor require changes to current applications or legacy servers. The OSCAR architecture is designed to automatically estimate the system's context, dynamically schedule various connections and/or packets to different interfaces, be backwards compatible with the current Internet architecture, and provide the user with incentives for collaboration. We also formulate the OSCAR scheduler as a multi-objective, multi-modal scheduler that maximizes system throughput while minimizing energy consumption or financial cost. We evaluate OSCAR via implementation on Linux, as well as via simulation, and compare our results to the current optimal achievable throughput, cost, and energy consumption. Our evaluation shows that, in the throughput maximization mode, we provide up to 150% enhancement in throughput compared to current operating systems, without any changes to legacy servers. Moreover, this performance gain further increases with the availability of connection resume-supporting, or OSCAR-enabled servers, reaching the maximum achievable upper-bound throughput

    Joint Computation Offloading and Prioritized Scheduling in Mobile Edge Computing

    With the rapid development of smart phones, enormous amounts of data are generated and usually require intensive and real-time computation. Nevertheless, quality of service (QoS) is hardly to be met due to the tension between resourcelimited (battery, CPU power) devices and computation-intensive applications. Mobileedge computing (MEC) emerging as a promising technique can be used to copy with stringent requirements from mobile applications. By offloading computationally intensive workloads to edge server and applying efficient task scheduling, energy cost of mobiles could be significantly reduced and therefore greatly improve QoS, e.g., latency. This paper proposes a joint computation offloading and prioritized task scheduling scheme in a multi-user mobile-edge computing system. We investigate an energy minimizing task offloading strategy in mobile devices and develop an effective priority-based task scheduling algorithm with edge server. The execution time, energy consumption, execution cost, and bonus score against both the task data sizes and latency requirement is adopted as the performance metric. Performance evaluation results show that, the proposed algorithm significantly reduce task completion time, edge server VM usage cost, and improve QoS in terms of bonus score. Moreover, dynamic prioritized task scheduling is also discussed herein, results show dynamic thresholds setting realizes the optimal task scheduling. We believe that this work is significant to the emerging mobile-edge computing paradigm, and can be applied to other Internet of Things (IoT)-Edge applications

    Let Opportunistic Crowdsensors Work Together for Resource-efficient, Quality-aware Observations

    International audienceOpportunistic crowdsensing empowers citizens carrying hand-held devices to sense physical phenomena of common interest at a large and fine-grained scale without requiring the citizens' active involvement. However, the resulting uncontrolled collection and upload of the massive amount of contributed raw data incur significant resource consumption, from the end device to the server, as well as challenge the quality of the collected observations. This paper tackles both challenges raised by opportunistic crowdsensing, that is, enabling the resource-efficient gathering of relevant observations. To achieve so, we introduce the BeTogether middleware fostering context-aware, collaborative crowdsensing at the edge so that co-located crowdsensors operating in the same context, group together to share the work load in a cost- and quality-effective way. We evaluate the proposed solution using an implementation-driven evaluation that leverages a dataset embedding nearly 1 million entries contributed by 550 crowdsensors over a year. Results show that BeTogether increases the quality of the collected data while reducing the overall resource cost compared to the cloud-centric approach
