A Morphological and Multicolor Survey for Faint QSOs in the Groth-Westphal Strip

Quasars representative of the populous faint end of the luminosity function are frustratingly dim with m~24 at intermediate redshift; moreover groundbased surveys for such faint QSOs suffer substantial morphological contamination by compact galaxies having similar colors. In order to establish a more reliable ultrafaint QSO sample, we used the APO 3.5-m telescope to take deep groundbased U-band CCD images in fields previously imaged in V,I with WFPC2/HST. Our approach hence combines multicolor photometry with the 0.1" spatial resolution of HST, to establish a morphological and multicolor survey for QSOs extending about 2 magnitudes fainter than most extant groundbased surveys. We present results for the "Groth-Westphal Strip", in which we identify 10 high likelihood UV-excess candidates having stellar or stellar-nucleus+galaxy morphology in WFPC2. For m(606)<24.0 (roughly B<24.5) the surface density of such QSO candidates is 420 (+180,-130) per square degree, or a surface density of 290 (+160,-110) per square degree with an additional V-I cut that may further exclude compact emission line galaxies. Even pending confirming spectroscopy, the observed surface density of QSO candidates is already low enough to yield interesting comparisons: our measures agree extremely well with the predictions of several recent luminosity function models.Comment: 29 pages including 6 tables and 7 figures. Pension wealth and household saving: evidence from pension reforms in the UK

    Get PDF
Using three major UK pension reforms as natural experiments we investigate the relationship between pension saving and discretionary private savings. Unlike most differences-in-differences approaches which rely on average differences between the control and the treatment group, we use economic theory to model the response of each individual household. The model permits us to use both time-series and cross-sectional variation in a consistent way to identify the behavioural response. The study is based on data from the Family Expenditure Survey. A measure of pension wealth is not observed, but we estimate it by applying the rules of the pension system to observed individual characteristics. The changes in pension wealth as a result of the reforms are substantial. The empirical analysis suggests that the earnings-related tier of the pension scheme has a negative impact on private savings with substitution elasticities approaching –1.0. The impact of the flat-rate tier of the scheme is found not to be significantly different from zero

Combining technologies to engineer scaffolds that can offer physical and chemical cues to cells is an attractive approach in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. In this study, we have fabricated polymer-ceramic hybrid scaffolds for bone regeneration by combining rapid prototyping (RP), electrospinning (ESP) and a biomimetic coating method in order to provide mechanical support and a physico-chemical environment mimicking both the organic and inorganic phases of bone extracellular matrix (ECM). Poly(ethylene oxide terephthalate)-poly(buthylene terephthalate) (PEOT/PBT) block copolymer was used to produce three dimensional scaffolds by combining 3D fiber (3DF) deposition, and ESP, and these constructs were then coated with a Ca-P layer in a simulated physiological solution. Scaffold morphology and composition were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled to energy dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX) and Fourier Tranform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Bone marrow derived human mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSCs) were cultured on coated and uncoated 3DF and 3DF + ESP scaffolds for up to 21 d in basic and mineralization medium and cell attachment, proliferation, and expression of genes related to osteogenesis were assessed. Cells attached, proliferated and secreted ECM on all the scaffolds. There were no significant differences in metabolic activity among the different groups on days 7 and 21. Coated 3DF scaffolds showed a significantly higher DNA amount in basic medium at 21 d compared with the coated 3DF + ESP scaffolds, whereas in mineralization medium, the presence of coating in 3DF+ESP scaffolds led to a significant decrease in the amount of DNA. An effect of combining different scaffolding technologies and material types on expression of a number of osteogenic markers (cbfa1, BMP-2, OP, OC and ON) was observed, suggesting the potential use of this approach in bone tissue engineerin

Outage Probability of Cognitive Relay Networks Over Generalized Fading Channels with Interference Constraints

AbstractIn this paper, we evaluate the outage probability (OP) of a cognitive relay network operating over generalized fading channels, modeled by the generalized-K and generalized-gamma distributions. In particular, secondary users, based on the underlay approach, cooperate employing decode-and-forward protocol, satisfying in any case an interference constraint on the primary destination users. The derived results include exact expressions as well as approximated ones for high values of the maximum allowed transmitted power. Numerical evaluated results show that the OP of cognitive relay networks is highly related with the fading/shadowing channel conditions as well as interfering constraints, with the latter resulting in higher OP compared to the conventional relaying systems

Semiclassical theory of transport in a random magnetic field

We study the semiclassical kinetics of 2D fermions in a smoothly varying magnetic field B(r)B({\bf r}). The nature of the transport depends crucially on both the strength B0B_0 of the random component of B(r)B({\bf r}) and its mean value Bˉ\bar{B}. For Bˉ=0\bar{B}=0, the governing parameter is α=d/R0\alpha=d/R_0, where dd is the correlation length of disorder and R0R_0 is the Larmor radius in the field B0B_0. While for α1\alpha\ll 1 the Drude theory applies, at α1\alpha\gg 1 most particles drift adiabatically along closed contours and are localized in the adiabatic approximation. The conductivity is then determined by a special class of trajectories, the "snake states", which percolate by scattering at the saddle points of B(r)B({\bf r}) where the adiabaticity of their motion breaks down. The external field also suppresses the diffusion by creating a percolation network of drifting cyclotron orbits. This kind of percolation is due only to a weak violation of the adiabaticity of the cyclotron rotation, yielding an exponential drop of the conductivity at large Bˉ\bar{B}. In the regime α1\alpha\gg 1 the crossover between the snake-state percolation and the percolation of the drift orbits with increasing Bˉ\bar{B} has the character of a phase transition (localization of snake states) smeared exponentially weakly by non-adiabatic effects. The ac conductivity also reflects the dynamical properties of particles moving on the fractal percolation network. In particular, it has a sharp kink at zero frequency and falls off exponentially at higher frequencies. We also discuss the nature of the quantum magnetooscillations. Detailed numerical studies confirm the analytical findings. The shape of the magnetoresistivity at α1\alpha\sim 1 is in good agreement with experimental data in the FQHE regime near ν=1/2\nu=1/2.Comment: 22 pages REVTEX, 14 figure

Feasibility of Electrified Propulsion for Ultra-Efficient Commercial Aircraft Final Report

    Get PDF
MIT, Aurora Flight Sciences, and USC have collaborated to assess the feasibility of electric, hybridelectric, and turbo-electric propulsion for ultra-efficient commercial transportation. The work has drawn on the team expertise in disciplines related to aircraft design, propulsion-airframe integration, electric machines and systems, engineering system design, and optimization. A parametric trade space analysis has been carried out to assess vehicle performance across a range of transport missions and propulsion architectures to establish how electrified propulsion systems scale. An optimization approach to vehicle conceptual design modeling was taken to enable rapid multidisciplinary design space exploration and sensitivity analysis. The results of the analysis indicate vehicle aero-propulsive integration benefits enabled by electrification are required to offset the increased weight and loss associated with the electric system and achieve enhanced performance; the report describes the conceptual configurations than can offer such enhancements. The main contribution of the present work is the definition of electric vehicle design attributes for potential efficiency improvements at different scales. Based on these results, key areas for future research are identified, and extensions to the trade space analysis suitable for higher fidelity electrified commercial aircraft design and analysis have been developed
