    Hybrid NRZ/Multi-Tone Signaling for High-Speed Low-Power Wireline Transceivers

    Over the past few decades, incessant growth of Internet networking traffic and High-Performance Computing (HPC) has led to a tremendous demand for data bandwidth. Digital communication technologies combined with advanced integrated circuit scaling trends have enabled the semiconductor and microelectronic industry to dramatically scale the bandwidth of high-loss interfaces such as Ethernet, backplane, and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL). The key to achieving higher bandwidth is to employ equalization technique to compensate the channel impairments such as Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI), crosstalk, and environmental noise. Therefore, todayâs advanced input/outputs (I/Os) has been equipped with sophisticated equalization techniques to push beyond the uncompensated bandwidth of the system. To this end, process scaling has continually increased the data processing capability and improved the I/O performance over the last 15 years. However, since the channel bandwidth has not scaled with the same pace, the required signal processing and equalization circuitry becomes more and more complicated. Thereby, the energy efficiency improvements are largely offset by the energy needed to compensate channel impairments. In this design paradigm, re-thinking about the design strategies in order to not only satisfy the bandwidth performance, but also to improve power-performance becomes an important necessity. It is well known in communication theory that coding and signaling schemes have the potential to provide superior performance over band-limited channels. However, the choice of the optimum data communication algorithm should be considered by accounting for the circuit level power-performance trade-offs. In this thesis we have investigated the application of new algorithm and signaling schemes in wireline communications, especially for communication between microprocessors, memories, and peripherals. A new hybrid NRZ/Multi-Tone (NRZ/MT) signaling method has been developed during the course of this research. The system-level and circuit-level analysis, design, and implementation of the proposed signaling method has been performed in the frame of this work, and the silicon measurement results have proved the efficiency and the robustness of the proposed signaling methodology for wireline interfaces. In the first part of this work, a 7.5 Gb/s hybrid NRZ/MT transceiver (TRX) for multi-drop bus (MDB) memory interfaces is designed and fabricated in 40 nm CMOS technology. Reducing the complexity of the equalization circuitry on the receiver (RX) side, the proposed architecture achieves 1 pJ/bit link efficiency for a MDB channel bearing 45 dB loss at 2.5 GHz. The measurement results of the first prototype confirm that NRZ/MT serial data TRX can offer an energy-efficient solution for MDB memory interfaces. Motivated by the satisfying results of the first prototype, in the second phase of this research we have exploited the properties of multi-tone signaling, especially orthogonality among different sub-bands, to reduce the effect of crosstalk in high-dense wireline interconnects. A four-channel transceiver has been implemented in a standard CMOS 40 nm technology in order to demonstrate the performance of NRZ/MT signaling in presence of high channel loss and strong crosstalk noise. The proposed system achieves 1 pJ/bit power efficiency, while communicating over a MDB memory channel at 36 Gb/s aggregate data rate

    Accelerating Checkpoint/Restart Application Performance in Large-Scale Systems with Network Attached Memory

    Technology scaling and a continual increase in operating frequency have been the main driver of processor performance for several decades. A recent slowdown in this evolution is compensated by multi-core architectures, which challenge application developers and also increase the disparity between the processor and memory performance. The increasing core count and growing scale of computing systems furthermore turn attention to communication as a significant contributor on application run-times. Larger systems also comprise many more components which are subject to failures. In order to mitigate the effects of these failures, fault tolerance techniques such as Checkpoint/Restart are used. These techniques often rely on message-based communication and data transport stresses the local memory interface. In order to reduce communication overhead it is desirable to either decrease the number of messages, or otherwise to accelerate the execution of commonly used global operations. Finally, power consumption of large-scale systems has become a major concern and the efficiency of such systems must considerably improve to allow future Exascale systems to operate within a reasonable power budget. This work addresses the topics memory interface, communication, fault tolerance, and energy efficiency in large-scale systems. It presents Network Attached Memory (NAM), an FPGA-based hardware prototype that can be directly connected to a common high-performance interconnection network in large-scale systems. It provides access to the emerging memory technology Hybrid Memory Cube (HMC) as shared memory resource, tightly integrated with processing elements. The first part introduces the HMC memory architecture and serial interface, and thoroughly evaluates it in an FPGA using a custom-developed host controller, which has become an open-source initiative. The next part describes the hardware architecture of the NAM design and prototype, and theoretically evaluates the expected performance and bottlenecks. The NAM design was fully prototyped in an FPGA and the contribution also comprises a corresponding software stack. As a first use case NAM serves as Checkpoint/Restart target, aiming to reduce inter-node communication and to accelerate the creation of checkpoint parity information. Reducing checkpointing overhead improves application run-times and energy efficiency likewise. The final part of this work evaluates the NAM performance in a 16 node test system. It shows a good read/write scaling behavior for an increasing number of nodes. For Checkpoint/Restart with a real application, a 2.1X improvement over a standard approach is a remarkable result. It proves the successful concept of a dedicated hardware component to reduce communication and fault tolerance overhead for current and future large-scale systems

    Data structures for SIMD logic simulation

    Due to the growth of design size and complexity, design verification is an important aspect of the Logic Circuit development process. The purpose of verification is to validate that the design meets the system requirements and specification. This is done by either functional or formal verification. The most popular approach to functional verification is the use of simulation based techniques. Using models to replicate the behaviour of an actual system is called simulation. In this thesis, a software/data structure architecture without explicit locks is proposed to accelerate logic gate circuit simulation. We call thus system ZSIM. The ZSIM software architecture simulator targets low cost SIMD multi-core machines. Its performance is evaluated on the Intel Xeon Phi and 2 other machines (Intel Xeon and AMD Opteron). The aim of these experiments is to: • Verify that the data structure used allows SIMD acceleration, particularly on machines with gather instructions ( section 5.3.1). • Verify that, on sufficiently large circuits, substantial gains could be made from multicore parallelism ( section 5.3.2 ). • Show that a simulator using this approach out-performs an existing commercial simulator on a standard workstation ( section 5.3.3 ). • Show that the performance on a cheap Xeon Phi card is competitive with results reported elsewhere on much more expensive super-computers ( section 5.3.5 ). To evaluate the ZSIM, two types of test circuits were used: 1. Circuits from the IWLS benchmark suit [1] which allow direct comparison with other published studies of parallel simulators.2. Circuits generated by a parametrised circuit synthesizer. The synthesizer used an algorithm that has been shown to generate circuits that are statistically representative of real logic circuits. The synthesizer allowed testing of a range of very large circuits, larger than the ones for which it was possible to obtain open source files. The experimental results show that with SIMD acceleration and multicore, ZSIM gained a peak parallelisation factor of 300 on Intel Xeon Phi and 11 on Intel Xeon. With only SIMD enabled, ZSIM achieved a maximum parallelistion gain of 10 on Intel Xeon Phi and 4 on Intel Xeon. Furthermore, it was shown that this software architecture simulator running on a SIMD machine is much faster than, and can handle much bigger circuits than a widely used commercial simulator (Xilinx) running on a workstation. The performance achieved by ZSIM was also compared with similar pre-existing work on logic simulation targeting GPUs and supercomputers. It was shown that ZSIM simulator running on a Xeon Phi machine gives comparable simulation performance to the IBM Blue Gene supercomputer at very much lower cost. The experimental results have shown that the Xeon Phi is competitive with simulation on GPUs and allows the handling of much larger circuits than have been reported for GPU simulation. When targeting Xeon Phi architecture, the automatic cache management of the Xeon Phi, handles and manages the on-chip local store without any explicit mention of the local store being made in the architecture of the simulator itself. However, targeting GPUs, explicit cache management in program increases the complexity of the software architecture. Furthermore, one of the strongest points of the ZSIM simulator is its portability. Note that the same code was tested on both AMD and Xeon Phi machines. The same architecture that efficiently performs on Xeon Phi, was ported into a 64 core NUMA AMD Opteron. To conclude, the two main achievements are restated as following: The primary achievement of this work was proving that the ZSIM architecture was faster than previously published logic simulators on low cost platforms. The secondary achievement was the development of a synthetic testing suite that went beyond the scale range that was previously publicly available, based on prior work that showed the synthesis technique is valid

    Power-constrained aware and latency-aware microarchitectural optimizations in many-core processors

    As the transistor budgets outpace the power envelope (the power-wall issue), new architectural and microarchitectural techniques are needed to improve, or at least maintain, the power efficiency of next-generation processors. Run-time adaptation, including core, cache and DVFS adaptations, has recently emerged as a promising area to keep the pace for acceptable power efficiency. However, none of the adaptation techniques proposed so far is able to provide good results when we consider the stringent power budgets that will be common in the next decades, so new techniques that attack the problem from several fronts using different specialized mechanisms are necessary. The combination of different power management mechanisms, however, bring extra levels of complexity, since other factors such as workload behavior and run-time conditions must also be considered to properly allocate power among cores and threads. To address the power issue, this thesis first proposes Chrysso, an integrated and scalable model-driven power management that quickly selects the best combination of adaptation methods out of different core and uncore micro-architecture adaptations, per-core DVFS, or any combination thereof. Chrysso can quickly search the adaptation space by making performance/power projections to identify Pareto-optimal configurations, effectively pruning the search space. Chrysso achieves 1.9x better chip performance over core-level gating for multi-programmed workloads, and 1.5x higher performance for multi-threaded workloads. Most existing power management schemes use a centralized approach to regulate power dissipation. Unfortunately, the complexity and overhead of centralized power management increases significantly with core count rendering it in-viable at fine-grain time slices. The work leverages a two-tier hierarchical power manager. This solution is highly scalable with low overhead on a tiled many-core architecture with shared LLC and per-tile DVFS at fine-grain time slices. The global power is first distributed across tiles using GPM and then within a tile (in parallel across all tiles). Additionally, this work also proposes DVFS and cache-aware thread migration (DCTM) to ensure optimum per-tile co-scheduling of compatible threads at runtime over the two-tier hierarchical power manager. DCTM outperforms existing solutions by up to 12% on adaptive many-core tile processor. With the advancements in the core micro-architectural techniques and technology scaling, the performance gap between the computational component and memory component is increasing significantly (the memory-wall issue). To bridge this gap, the architecture community is pushing forward towards multi-core architecture with on-die near-memory DRAM cache memory (faster than conventional DRAM). Gigascale DRAM Caches poses a problem of how to efficiently manage the tags. The Tags-in-DRAM designs aims at efficiently co-locate tags with data, but it still suffer from high latency especially in multi-way associativity. The thesis finally proposes Tag Cache mechanism, an on-chip distributed tag caching mechanism with limited space and latency overhead to bypass the tag read operation in multi-way DRAM Caches, thereby reducing hit latency. Each Tag Cache, stored in L2, stores tag information of the most recently used DRAM Cache ways. The Tag Cache is able to exploit temporal locality of the DRAM Cache, thereby contributing to on average 46% of the DRAM Cache hits.A mesura que el consum dels transistors supera el nivell de potència desitjable es necessiten noves tècniques arquitectòniques i microarquitectòniques per millorar, o almenys mantenir, l'eficiència energètica dels processadors de les pròximes generacions. L'adaptació en temps d'execució, tant de nuclis com de les cachés, així com també adaptacions DVFS són idees que han sorgit recentment que fan preveure que sigui un àrea prometedora per mantenir un ritme d'eficiència energètica acceptable. Tanmateix, cap de les tècniques d'adaptació proposades fins ara és capaç d'oferir bons resultats si tenim en compte les restriccions estrictes de potència que seran comuns a les pròximes dècades. És convenient definir noves tècniques que ataquin el problema des de diversos fronts utilitzant diferents mecanismes especialitzats. La combinació de diferents mecanismes de gestió d'energia porta aparellada nivells addicionals de complexitat, ja que altres factors com ara el comportament de la càrrega de treball així com condicions específiques de temps d'execució també han de ser considerats per assignar adequadament la potència entre els nuclis del sistema computador. Per tractar el tema de la potència, aquesta tesi proposa en primer lloc Chrysso, una administració d'energia integrada i escalable que selecciona ràpidament la millor combinació entre diferents adaptacions microarquitectòniques. Chrysso pot buscar ràpidament l'adaptació adequada al fer projeccions òptimes de rendiment i potència basades en configuracions de Pareto, permetent així reduir de manera efectiva l'espai de cerca. Chrysso arriba a un rendiment de 1,9 sobre tècniques convencionals d'inhibició de portes amb una càrrega d'aplicacions seqüencials; i un rendiment de 1,5 quan les aplicacions corresponen a programes parla·lels. La majoria dels sistemes de gestió d'energia existents utilitzen un enfocament centralitzat per regular la dissipació d'energia. Malauradament, la complexitat i el temps d'administració s'incrementen significativament amb una gran quantitat de nuclis. En aquest treball es defineix un gestor jeràrquic de potència basat en dos nivells. Aquesta solució és altament escalable amb baix cost operatiu en una arquitectura de múltiples nuclis integrats en clústers, amb memòria caché de darrer nivell compartida a nivell de cluster, i DVFS establert en intervals de temps de gra fi a nivell de clúster. La potència global es distribueix en primer lloc a través dels clústers utilitzant GPM i després es distribueix dins un clúster (en paral·lel si es consideren tots els clústers). A més, aquest treball també proposa DVFS i migració de fils conscient de la memòria caché (DCTM) que garanteix una òptima distribució de tasques entre els nuclis. DCTM supera les solucions existents fins a un 12%. Amb els avenços en la tecnologia i les tècniques de micro-arquitectura de nuclis, la diferència de rendiment entre el component computacional i la memòria està augmentant significativament. Per omplir aquest buit, s'està avançant cap a arquitectures de múltiples nuclis amb memòries caché integrades basades en DRAM. Aquestes memòries caché DRAM a gran escala plantegen el problema de com gestionar de forma eficaç les etiquetes. Els dissenys de cachés amb dades i etiquetes juntes són un primer pas, però encara pateixen per tenir una alta latència, especialment en cachés amb un grau alt d'associativitat. En aquesta tesi es proposa l'estudi d'una tècnica anomenada Tag Cache, un mecanisme distribuït d'emmagatzematge d'etiquetes, que redueix la latència de les operacions de lectura d'etiquetes en les memòries caché DRAM. Cada Tag Cache, que resideix a L2, emmagatzema la informació de les vies que s'han accedit recentment de les memòries caché DRAM. D'aquesta manera es pot aprofitar la localitat temporal d'una caché DRAM, fet que contribueix en promig en un 46% dels encerts en les caché DRAM

    Grid and high performance computing applied to bioinformatics

    Recent advances in genome sequencing technologies and modern biological data analysis technologies used in bioinformatics have led to a fast and continuous increase in biological data. The difficulty of managing the huge amounts of data currently available to researchers and the need to have results within a reasonable time have led to the use of distributed and parallel computing infrastructures for their analysis. In this context Grid computing has been successfully used. Grid computing is based on a distributed system which interconnects several computers and/or clusters to access global-scale resources. This infrastructure is exible, highly scalable and can achieve high performances with data-compute-intensive algorithms. Recently, bioinformatics is exploring new approaches based on the use of hardware accelerators, such as the Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). Initially developed as graphics cards, GPUs have been recently introduced for scientific purposes by rea- son of their performance per watt and the better cost/performance ratio achieved in terms of throughput and response time compared to other high-performance com- puting solutions. Although developers must have an in-depth knowledge of GPU programming and hardware to be effective, GPU accelerators have produced a lot of impressive results. The use of high-performance computing infrastructures raises the question of finding a way to parallelize the algorithms while limiting data dependency issues in order to accelerate computations on a massively parallel hardware. In this context, the research activity in this dissertation focused on the assessment and testing of the impact of these innovative high-performance computing technolo- gies on computational biology. In order to achieve high levels of parallelism and, in the final analysis, obtain high performances, some of the bioinformatic algorithms applicable to genome data analysis were selected, analyzed and implemented. These algorithms have been highly parallelized and optimized, thus maximizing the GPU hardware resources. The overall results show that the proposed parallel algorithms are highly performant, thus justifying the use of such technology. However, a software infrastructure for work ow management has been devised to provide support in CPU and GPU computation on a distributed GPU-based in- frastructure. Moreover, this software infrastructure allows a further coarse-grained data-parallel parallelization on more GPUs. Results show that the proposed appli- cation speed-up increases with the increase in the number of GPUs
