    Miniature Telerobots in Space Applications

    Ground controlled telerobots can be used to reduce astronaut workload while retaining much of the human capabilities of planning, execution, and error recovery for specific tasks. Miniature robots can be used for delicate and time consuming tasks such as biological experiment servicing without incurring the significant mass and power penalties associated with larger robot systems. However, questions remain regarding the technical and economic effectiveness of such mini-telerobotic systems. This paper address some of these open issues and the details of two projects which will provide some of the needed answers. The Microtrex project is a joint University of Washington/NASA project which plans on flying a miniature robot as a Space Shuttle experiment to evaluate the effects of microgravity on ground-controlled manipulation while subject to variable time-delay communications. A related project involving the University of Washington and Boeing Defense and Space will evaluate the effectiveness f using a minirobot to service biological experiments in a space station experiment 'glove-box' rack mock-up, again while subject to realistic communications constraints

    Advancements of a MicroSat for On-Orbit Satellite Surgery

    The concept of a highly articulated microsat to perform in-space construction, assembly, and repair is emerging due to advancements in microelectronics, robotics, and microsatellite technology. The combination of these has led to investigating foundational elements for conducting remote space robotic missions that will enable machines to build machines. The idea goes beyond robotic systems designed to mate specialty-crafted space modules or in-space 3D printed structures. It addresses a means to work with typical flight hardware in this remote, lifeless environment. The work presented in this research has focused on creating a semi-autonomous platform that shares both autonomous GN&C operations with man-in-the-loop telerobotics. The testbed platform contains a means for target capture, attachment, and for conducting technician-like mechanical tasks that include gripping, cutting, and working with fasteners with an interchangeable tool set. As the system evolves, evaluation tests have shown many aspects are feasible such as cutting thermal insulation and wire. For instance, the system can reach into a harness, isolate a 26 ga. wire, and cut it. It has also been able to perform small cuts in thermal insulation membranes. Fasteners are proving to be more challenging due to robotic tool alignment and management of forces

    Human factors in space telepresence

    The problems of interfacing a human with a teleoperation system, for work in space are discussed. Much of the information presented here is the result of experience gained by the M.I.T. Space Systems Laboratory during the past two years of work on the ARAMIS (Automation, Robotics, and Machine Intelligence Systems) project. Many factors impact the design of the man-machine interface for a teleoperator. The effects of each are described in turn. An annotated bibliography gives the key references that were used. No conclusions are presented as a best design, since much depends on the particular application desired, and the relevant technology is swiftly changing

    A Novel Predictor Based Framework to Improve Mobility of High Speed Teleoperated Unmanned Ground Vehicles

    Teleoperated Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) have been widely used in applications when driver safety, mission eciency or mission cost is a major concern. One major challenge with teleoperating a UGV is that communication delays can significantly affect the mobility performance of the vehicle and make teleoperated driving tasks very challenging especially at high speeds. In this dissertation, a predictor based framework with predictors in a new form and a blended architecture are developed to compensate effects of delays through signal prediction, thereby improving vehicle mobility performance. The novelty of the framework is that minimal information about the governing equations of the system is required to compensate delays and, thus, the prediction is robust to modeling errors. This dissertation first investigates a model-free solution and develops a predictor that does not require information about the vehicle dynamics or human operators' motion for prediction. Compared to the existing model-free methods, neither assumptions about the particular way the vehicle moves, nor knowledge about the noise characteristics that drive the existing predictive filters are needed. Its stability and performance are studied and a predictor design procedure is presented. Secondly, a blended architecture is developed to blend the outputs of the model-free predictor with those of a steering feedforward loop that relies on minimal information about vehicle lateral response. Better prediction accuracy is observed based on open-loop virtual testing with the blended architecture compared to using either the model-free predictors or the model-based feedforward loop alone. The mobility performance of teleoperated vehicles with delays and the predictor based framework are evaluated in this dissertation with human-in-the-loop experiments using both simulated and physical vehicles in teleoperation mode.     Wavelet packet transform-based compression for teleoperation

    This paper introduces a codec scheme for compressing the control and feedback signals in networked control and teleoperation systems. The method makes use of Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT) and Inverse Wavelet Packet Transform (IWPT) for coding and decoding operations, respectively. Data compression is carried out in low-pass filter output by reducing the sampling rate, and in high-pass filter output by truncating the wavelet coefficients. The proposed codec works on both directions of signal transmission between a master robot and a slave robot over a networked motion control architecture. Following the formulation of the compression/decompression methodology, experimental validation is conducted on a single-degree-of-freedom motion control system. In the experiments, responses from different Wavelet structures are analyzed and a comparative study is carried out considering the factors of compression rate, reconstruction power error and real-time computational complexity. It is confirmed that the controller using the proposed compression algorithm performs very close to the uncompressed one while enabling transmission of much less data over the network

    Passivity-Based adaptive bilateral teleoperation control for uncertain manipulators without jerk measurements

    In this work, we consider the bilateral teleoperation problem of cooperative robotic systems in a Single-Master Multi-Slave (SM/MS) configuration, which is able to perform load transportation tasks in the presence of parametric uncertainty in the robot kinematic and dynamic models. The teleoperation architecture is based on the two-layer approach placed in a hierarchical structure, whose top and bottom layers are responsible for ensuring the transparency and stability properties respectively. The load transportation problem is tackled by using the formation control approach wherein the desired translational velocity and interaction force are provided to the master robot by the user, while the object is manipulated with a bounded constant force by the slave robots. Firstly, we develop an adaptive kinematic-based control scheme based on a composite adaptation law to solve the cooperative control problem for robots with uncertain kinematics. Secondly, the dynamic adaptive control for cooperative robots is implemented by means of a cascade control strategy, which does not require the measurement of the time derivative of force (which requires jerk measurements). The combination of the Lyapunov stability theory and the passivity formalism are used to establish the stability and convergence property of the closed-loop control system. Simulations and experimental results illustrate the performance and feasibility of the proposed control scheme.No presente trabalho, considera-se o problema de teleoperação bilateral de um sistema robótico cooperativo do tipo single-master e multiple-slaves (SM/MS) capaz de realizar tarefas de transporte de carga na presença de incertezas paramétricas no modelo cinemático e dinâmico dos robôs. A arquitetura de teleoperação está baseada na abordagem de duas camadas em estrutura hierárquica, onde as camadas superior e inferior são responsáveis por assegurar as propriedades de transparência e estabilidade respectivamente. O problema de transporte de carga é formulado usando a abordagem de controle de formação onde a velocidade de translação desejada e a força de interação são fornecidas ao robô mestre pelo operador, enquanto o objeto é manipulado pelos robôs escravos com uma força constante limitada. Primeiramente, desenvolve-se um esquema de controle adaptativo cinemático baseado em uma lei de adaptação composta para solucionar o problema de controle cooperativo de robôs com cinemática incerta. Em seguida, o controle adaptativo dinâmico de robôs cooperativos é implementado por meio de uma estratégia de controle em cascata, que não requer a medição da derivada da força (o qual requer a derivada da aceleração ou jerk). A teoria de estabilidade de Lyapunov e o formalismo de passividade são usados para estabelecer as propriedades de estabilidade e a convergência do sistema de controle em malha-fechada. Resultados de simulações numéricas ilustram o desempenho e viabilidade da estratégia de controle proposta
