    Integrated motor drives: state of the art and future trends

    With increased need for high power density, high efficiency and high temperature capabilities in Aerospace and Automotive applications, Integrated Motor Drives (IMD) offers a potential solution. However, close physical integration of the converter and the machine may also lead to an increase in components temperature. This requires careful mechanical, structural and thermal analysis; and design of the IMD system. This paper reviews existing IMD technologies and their thermal effects on the IMD system. The effects of the power electronics (PE) position on the IMD system and its respective thermal management concepts are also investigated. The challenges faced in designing and manufacturing of an IMD along with the mechanical and structural impacts of close physical integration is also discussed and potential solutions are provided. Potential converter topologies for an IMD like the Matrix converter, 2-level Bridge, 3-level NPC and Multiphase full bridge converters are also reviewed. Wide band gap devices like SiC and GaN and their packaging in power modules for IMDs are also discussed. Power modules components and packaging technologies are also presented

    Resilient and Real-time Control for the Optimum Management of Hybrid Energy Storage Systems with Distributed Dynamic Demands

    A continuous increase in demands from the utility grid and traction applications have steered public attention toward the integration of energy storage (ES) and hybrid ES (HESS) solutions. Modern technologies are no longer limited to batteries, but can include supercapacitors (SC) and flywheel electromechanical ES well. However, insufficient control and algorithms to monitor these devices can result in a wide range of operational issues. A modern day control platform must have a deep understanding of the source. In this dissertation, specialized modular Energy Storage Management Controllers (ESMC) were developed to interface with a variety of ES devices. The EMSC provides the capability to individually monitor and control a wide range of different ES, enabling the extraction of an ES module within a series array to charge or conduct maintenance, while remaining storage can still function to serve a demand. Enhancements and testing of the ESMC are explored in not only interfacing of multiple ES and HESS, but also as a platform to improve management algorithms. There is an imperative need to provide a bridge between the depth of the electrochemical physics of the battery and the power engineering sector, a feat which was accomplished over the course of this work. First, the ESMC was tested on a lead acid battery array to verify its capabilities. Next, physics-based models of lead acid and lithium ion batteries lead to the improvement of both online battery management and established multiple metrics to assess their lifetime, or state of health. Three unique HESS were then tested and evaluated for different applications and purposes. First, a hybrid battery and SC HESS was designed and tested for shipboard power systems. Next, a lithium ion battery and SC HESS was utilized for an electric vehicle application, with the goal to reduce cycling on the battery. Finally, a lead acid battery and flywheel ES HESS was analyzed for how the inclusion of a battery can provide a dramatic improvement in the power quality versus flywheel ES alone

    Ultra-low Power Circuits for Internet of Things (IOT)

    Miniaturized sensor nodes offer an unprecedented opportunity for the semiconductor industry which led to a rapid development of the application space: the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT is a global infrastructure that interconnects physical and virtual things which have the potential to dramatically improve people's daily lives. One of key aspect that makes IoT special is that the internet is expanding into places that has been ever reachable as device form factor continue to decreases. Extremely small sensors can be placed on plants, animals, humans, and geologic features, and connected to the Internet. Several challenges, however, exist that could possibly slow the development of IoT. In this thesis, several circuit techniques as well as system level optimizations to meet the challenging power/energy requirement for the IoT design space are described. First, a fully-integrated temperature sensor for battery-operated, ultra-low power microsystems is presented. Sensor operation is based on temperature independent/dependent current sources that are used with oscillators and counters to generate a digital temperature code. Second, an ultra-low power oscillator designed for wake-up timers in compact wireless sensors is presented. The proposed topology separates the continuous comparator from the oscillation path and activates it only for short period when it is required. As a result, both low power tracking and generation of precise wake-up signal is made possible. Third, an 8-bit sub-ranging SAR ADC for biomedical applications is discussed that takes an advantage of signal characteristics. ADC uses a moving window and stores the previous MSBs voltage value on a series capacitor to achieve energy saving compared to a conventional approach while maintaining its accuracy. Finally, an ultra-low power acoustic sensing and object recognition microsystem that uses frequency domain feature extraction and classification is presented. By introducing ultra-low 8-bit SAR-ADC with 50fF input capacitance, power consumption of the frontend amplifier has been reduced to single digit nW-level. Also, serialized discrete Fourier transform (DFT) feature extraction is proposed in a digital back-end, replacing a high-power/area-consuming conventional FFT.PHDElectrical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.
