    Open CASCADE and rapid prototyping in human carotid lumen reconstruction

    Image processing algorithms, CAD-CAM tools and rapid prototyping (RP) techniques are able to produce complex lumen artery replicas. This work presents a system for manufacturing the lumen of human carotid from computed tomography acquisition. The pipe-line of manufacturing process of a human carotid lumen replication is presented. Each stage of the pipe-line is briefly discussed. Technical details of the 3D surface reconstruction phase, based on the Open Cascade geometric modelling software, and the RP manufaturing process based on Fused Deposition Modelling are presented

    Valorization of urban heritage: modeling UAV 3D data for mobile platforms

    The valorisation of the urban heritage is presently one of main topics discussed, mostly in the theme related conferences, treaties, conventions and programs. Mobile platforms (especially smartphones and tablets) may be very useful technological means for the agents in the territory. Admitting these assumptions, we created an information model for a mobile application (app) development, with a specific theme (water and city) that represents and describes architectural elements of a city. The selected architectural elements are those related with the water supply system in Lisbon built from XVIII to the XIX century. The inclusion of these elements in a mobile platform requires 3D modelling, improving the visualization and alphanumeric information access (e.g. historical) very useful to the agents (in particular to the city visitors). 3D models were created based on terrestrial and UAV surveys, considering rapid and authentic data acquisition. The stages of building the models were: i) Data acquisition (UAV - flight planning and image acquisition); ii) Data processing; iii) Data visualization (App/AR). The created models are very realistic. However, the results may differ when processing the data in different software, especially concerning the level of detail. The technical challenge is to simplify the models to use in mobile platforms and maintain the level of realism. The Communication will present a case study of 3D modelling with UAV data and their representation in an Augmented Reality environment through mobile platforms

    Mobile indoor laser scanning for 3D strata registration purposes based on indoorgml

    In Malaysia, the current 2D cadastre system is regularly updated by the National Mapping Agency (NMA) and Land Offices (LO). However, this 2D information may not be able to serve complex situations. The 3D strata acquisition and 3D modelling are important for strata title to manage the Right, Restriction and Responsibility (RRRs). This means there is a need for the system to be extended into 3D cadastre environment. One of the data acquisition techniques such as LiDAR from Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) could be utilised to solve the problem. This research also discusses the 3D geospatial objects generated from the captured point-clouds, modelled in SketchUp and transformed into IndoorGML. In this study, Web application is developed as a platform for generating an integrated XML-IndoorGML schema. Thus, this research contributes on 3D strata modelling especially for the development of 3D strata registration in Malaysia

    3D Modelling from Real Data

    The genesis of a 3D model has basically two definitely different paths. Firstly we can consider the CAD generated models, where the shape is defined according to a user drawing action, operating with different mathematical “bricks” like B-Splines, NURBS or subdivision surfaces (mathematical CAD modelling), or directly drawing small polygonal planar facets in space, approximating with them complex free form shapes (polygonal CAD modelling). This approach can be used for both ideal elements (a project, a fantasy shape in the mind of a designer, a 3D cartoon, etc.) or for real objects. In the latter case the object has to be first surveyed in order to generate a drawing coherent with the real stuff. If the surveying process is not only a rough acquisition of simple distances with a substantial amount of manual drawing, a scene can be modelled in 3D by capturing with a digital instrument many points of its geometrical features and connecting them by polygons to produce a 3D result similar to a polygonal CAD model, with the difference that the shape generated is in this case an accurate 3D acquisition of a real object (reality-based polygonal modelling). Considering only device operating on the ground, 3D capturing techniques for the generation of reality-based 3D models may span from passive sensors and image data (Remondino and El-Hakim, 2006), optical active sensors and range data (Blais, 2004; Shan & Toth, 2008; Vosselman and Maas, 2010), classical surveying (e.g. total stations or Global Navigation Satellite System - GNSS), 2D maps (Yin et al., 2009) or an integration of the aforementioned methods (Stumpfel et al., 2003; Guidi et al., 2003; Beraldin, 2004; Stamos et al., 2008; Guidi et al., 2009a; Remondino et al., 2009; Callieri et al., 2011). The choice depends on the required resolution and accuracy, object dimensions, location constraints, instrument’s portability and usability, surface characteristics, working team experience, project’s budget, final goal, etc. Although aware of the potentialities of the image-based approach and its recent developments in automated and dense image matching for non-expert the easy usability and reliability of optical active sensors in acquiring 3D data is generally a good motivation to decline image-based approaches. Moreover the great advantage of active sensors is the fact that they deliver immediately dense and detailed 3D point clouds, whose coordinate are metrically defined. On the other hand image data require some processing and a mathematical formulation to transform the two-dimensional image measurements into metric three-dimensional coordinates. Image-based modelling techniques (mainly photogrammetry and computer vision) are generally preferred in cases of monuments or architectures with regular geometric shapes, low budget projects, good experience of the working team, time or location constraints for the data acquisition and processing. This chapter is intended as an updated review of reality-based 3D modelling in terrestrial applications, with the different categories of 3D sensing devices and the related data processing pipelines

    Uniform acquisition modelling across PET imaging systems: Unified scatter modelling

    © 2016 IEEE. PET imaging is an important tool commonly used for studying disease by research consortia which implement multi-centre studies to improve the statistical power of findings. The UK government launched the Dementias Platform UK to facilitate one of the world's largest dementia population study involving national centres equipped with state-of-the-art PET/MR scanners from two major vendors. However, the difference in PET detector technology between the two scanners involved makes the standardisation of data acquisition and image reconstruction necessary. We propose a new approach to PET acquisition system modelling across different PET systems and technologies, focusing in particular on unified scatter estimation across TOF (time-of-flight) and non-TOF PET systems. The proposed scatter modelling is fully 3D and voxel based, as opposed to the popular line-of-response driven methods. This means that for each emitting voxel an independent 3D scatter estimate is found, inherently preserving the necessary information for TOF calculations as well as accounting for the large axial field of view. With adequate sampling of the input images, the non-TOF scatter estimate is identical to the summed TOF estimates across TOF bins, without an additional computational cost used for the TOF estimation. The model is implemented using the latest NVIDA GPU CUDA platform, allowing finer sampling of image space which is more essential for accurate TOF modelling. The high accuracy of the proposed scatter model is validated using Monte Carlo simulations. The model is deployed in our stand-alone image reconstruction pipeline for the Biograph mMR scanner, demonstrating accurate 3D scatter estimates resulting in uniform reconstruction for a high statistics phantom scan

This is indirectly encouraging multilayer development (strata) especially for the development of residential properties such as condominiums, apartments and others. The idea of having 3D database for the cadastral system has been discussed for a good and efficient management in Malaysia. The development in 3D GIS will make a 3D cadastral realizable.     Applied surveying education : documenting cultural heritage in 3D in the city of Ghent (Belgium) using laser scanning and photo modelling

    For several years the city of Ghent (Belgium) and the Ghent University, Department of Geography have been working together to document and measure important cultural heritage sites in 3D. The partnership enables master students in Geomatics and Surveying at the Ghent University to take part in a project driven measuring campaign. During the project, students use and compare several 3D data acquisition methods. This allows the students to implement their theoretical knowledge in the field. The used methods are analysed and critically compared by the students. Through this hands-on-training, students are encouraged to think “outside the box”. When problems occur, they are stimulated to think how these problems could have happened and most importantly how they can solve them. The documentation of these historic monuments in Ghent will be used during future renovation works and archaeological research. This paper will discuss the measurements in the Ghent City Museum (Stadsmuseum or STAM). The following methods are applied during the extensive field work: engineering surveying using total station and GNSS, photo modelling and laser scanning. The deliverables are created in a CAD or GIS environment. After successful completion of the course, students have gained a significant expertise concerning the processing of topographic data, 3D point clouds and imagery in an integrated way. This knowledge can be used after their studies to assess which equipment is most suitable for any given survey project. The final products of the photo modelling and the laser scanning process is a 3D model. Furthermore, digital elevation models and orthorectified images of the historic monument can be created. The orthorectified images are visualised and processed into high resolution orthophoto plans, in a CAD or GIS environment

    An approach for real world data modelling with the 3D terrestrial laser scanner for built environment

    Capturing and modelling 3D information of the built environment is a big challenge. A number of techniques and technologies are now in use. These include EDM, GPS, and photogrammetric application, remote sensing and traditional building surveying applications. However, use of these technologies cannot be practical and efficient in regard to time, cost and accuracy. Furthermore, a multi disciplinary knowledge base, created from the studies and research about the regeneration aspects is fundamental: historical, architectural, archeologically, environmental, social, economic, etc. In order to have an adequate diagnosis of regeneration, it is necessary to describe buildings and surroundings by means of documentation and plans. However, at this point in time the foregoing is considerably far removed from the real situation, since more often than not it is extremely difficult to obtain full documentation and cartography, of an acceptable quality, since the material, constructive pathologies and systems are often insufficient or deficient (flat that simply reflects levels, isolated photographs,..). Sometimes the information in reality exists, but this fact is not known, or it is not easily accessible, leading to the unnecessary duplication of efforts and resources. In this paper, we discussed 3D laser scanning technology, which can acquire high density point data in an accurate, fast way. Besides, the scanner can digitize all the 3D information concerned with a real world object such as buildings, trees and terrain down to millimetre detail Therefore, it can provide benefits for refurbishment process in regeneration in the Built Environment and it can be the potential solution to overcome the challenges above. The paper introduce an approach for scanning buildings, processing the point cloud raw data, and a modelling approach for CAD extraction and building objects classification by a pattern matching approach in IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) format. The approach presented in this paper from an undertaken research can lead to parametric design and Building Information Modelling (BIM) for existing structures. Two case studies are introduced to demonstrate the use of laser scanner technology in the Built Environment. These case studies are the Jactin House Building in East Manchester and the Peel building in the campus of University Salford.
