    Flexible and Affordable Foreign Language Learning Environment based on Web 2.0 Technologies

    Web technologies and educational platforms have greatly evolved over the past decade. One of the most significant factors contributing to education on the Internet has been the development of Web 2.0 technologies. These technologies, socially interactive in nature, have much to contribute to the area of Computer Assisted Language Leaning. Unfortunately, Web 2.0 technologies for the most part have been used in an ad hoc manner, permitting language learners acquire knowledge through interaction, but not through a more structured manner as these technologies were not developed to help lean languages as such. The goal of our work is to research and develop an environment, which employs Web 2.0 technology plus online language learning tools to provide a more integrated language learning environment. This paper will explore the technologies and provide information about how tools can be better integrated to provide a more productive working environment for language learners. A first working proof of concept based on our approach introduced is promising supporting modern language requirements and first findings and space for improvements are discussed

    In the software development process, requirements negotiation is an essential part in which stakeholders jointly have to come to an agreement. Such a negotiation process is often conducted using information systems, which makes it an electronic requirements negotiation process. The aim of the current paper is to present the state-of-the-art in electronic requirements negotiations. We elicit the state-of-the-art by analysing relevant literature, extracting areas of current research, and describing the status quo of each area. The identified areas of research are foundations of electronic requirements negotiation, electronic requirements negotiation methodology, automation of electronic requirements negotiation, computer- mediated communication, and social communication

    Resource management simulation using multi-agent approach and semantic constraints

    The resource management in a dynamic environment is a really complex problem. If semantic constraints are taken into account the complexity increases significantly. The problem definition of resource management using semantic constraints in the subject domain is demonstrated by means of an example of manufacturing scheduling. The application of multiagent approach is suggested and examined to solve the resource management problem. Experiments simulate two types of calculations of the resource allocation problem in manufacturing scheduling: the multi-agent approach and the sequential calculations. The experiments have demonstrated the effectiveness of multi-agent approach to solve the above defined problem

    Automated Realistic Test Input Generation and Cost Reduction in Service-centric System Testing

    Service-centric System Testing (ScST) is more challenging than testing traditional software due to the complexity of service technologies and the limitations that are imposed by the SOA environment. One of the most important problems in ScST is the problem of realistic test data generation. Realistic test data is often generated manually or using an existing source, thus it is hard to automate and laborious to generate. One of the limitations that makes ScST challenging is the cost associated with invoking services during testing process. This thesis aims to provide solutions to the aforementioned problems, automated realistic input generation and cost reduction in ScST. To address automation in realistic test data generation, the concept of Service-centric Test Data Generation (ScTDG) is presented, in which existing services used as realistic data sources. ScTDG minimises the need for tester input and dependence on existing data sources by automatically generating service compositions that can generate the required test data. In experimental analysis, our approach achieved between 93% and 100% success rates in generating realistic data while state-of-the-art automated test data generation achieved only between 2% and 34%. The thesis addresses cost concerns at test data generation level by enabling data source selection in ScTDG. Source selection in ScTDG has many dimensions such as cost, reliability and availability. This thesis formulates this problem as an optimisation problem and presents a multi-objective characterisation of service selection in ScTDG, aiming to reduce the cost of test data generation. A cost-aware pareto optimal test suite minimisation approach addressing testing cost concerns during test execution is also presented. The approach adapts traditional multi-objective minimisation approaches to ScST domain by formulating ScST concerns, such as invocation cost and test case reliability.     El incremento en el uso de arquitecturas orientadas a servicios en los últimos 15 años ha propiciado la propuesta de numerosas técnicas para automatizar y dar soporte al uso de dichos servicios. Un elemento fundamental en la provisión de servicios es el Acuerdo de Nivel de Servicio (ANS), donde se formalizan los requisitos y garantías de consumidor y proveedor respecto del rendimiento del servicio. Las propuestas para servicios computacionales, además de proveer modelos formales para describirlos, proponen la automatización de las diferentes etapas del ciclo de vida del ANS, tales como la negociación de las garantías para crear un ANS, el despliegue de servicios basados en el ANS, o la gestión de los recursos para cumplir las garantías provistas en el mismo. Sin embargo, en los servicios tradicionales, no computacionales, es decir, los servicios que no son ejecutados por recursos computacionales, tales como los servicios de logística o de desarrollo de software, la gestión de sus ANSs todavía se realiza por medios ad-hoc. Así, las soluciones existentes no pueden ser reutilizadas por diferentes servicios. Y, en la mayoría de los casos, esta gestión se hace de manera manual (p.e. revisión de los objetivos acordados en los ANSs de servicios de transporte), por lo que la evaluación de estos ANSs es susceptible a errores y se suele retrasar respecto a la ejecución del servicio (p.e. cuando el ANS ha finalizado), por lo que no se pueden tomar acciones preventivas para evitar el incumplimiento del ANS o estas acciones no son rentables. En estos escenarios, aparecen, además, acuerdos marco para un periodo largo (p.e. 1 aõ), durante el cual pueden aparecen ANSs relacionados con éste para un periodo más específico y el análisis de la coherencia entre acuerdos marco y acuerdos específicos es complicada de hacer durante la ejecución del servicio. En esta tesis, nos proponemos automatizar parcialmente la gestión de los ANSs de servicios no computacionales. Así, por un lado, proponemos que los modelos para servicios computacionales se extiendan a servicios no computacionales, de manera que permitan describir la operativa del servicio y sus garantías. Y, por otro lado, basado en estos modelos, proporcionamos el diseño de operaciones para gestionar el ciclo de vida de los ANS. Concretamente, estas operaciones se basan en las fases de despligue y evaluación del ANS. De forma específica, esta tesis propone tres contribuciones principales. Primero, (A) extender iAgree para dar soporte al modelado de los ANS de servicios no computacionales. Segundo, (B) dar soporte al ciclo de vida de dichos ANS mediante la formalización de las operaciones citadas (configuración del servicio basada en el ANS y monitorización del mismo) y, a partir de estas operaciones, implementamos una arquitectura de referencia para estas operaciones. Y, por último, (C) proveemos el modelado de la relación entre acuerdos marco y específicos que relacione sus términos junto con la formalización de las operaciones para el análisis que aparecen entre ellos. Otros aspectos del ciclo de vida del servicio y del ANS, como la gestión de los recursos para mejorar el rendimiento del servicio o el uso de técnicas (como machine learning) para la predicción del cumplimiento de los ANSs están fuera del contexto de esta tesis, pero se plantean como futuras líneas de extensión. Este trabajo se ha basado en ANSs reales de diferentes dominios, tales como servicios de Transporte y Logística, proveedores de Cloud or outsourcing de desarrollo TIC, que se han utilizado para validar las propuestas. Además, las contribuciones presentadas se han aplicado en el contexto de proyectos reales de soporte de sistemas TIC.The rise of computational services in the last 15 years brought the proposal of a number of techniques to automate and support their enactment. One key element in services is the Service Level Agreement (SLA), where the requirements of service customer are matched with the performance levels from the service provider to define service level guarantees and related responsibilities. The proposals from computational domains are oriented to automate the different stages in the SLA Lifecycle, such as the negotiation of terms which will form the SLA, the deployment of services based on the SLA artifact or the management of computational resources to accomplish SLA goals on runtime. However, traditional non-computational services, that is, services which are not performed by computational resources, such as logistics or software development services, are still supported by ad-hoc mechanisms. Therefore, the existing solutions for the management of their SLAs cannot be reused for other services. This management is usually manually performed (e.g.: reviewing of the goals of an SLA in transport service), so their evaluation is error-prone and delayed regarding the service execution (e.g.: when the SLA is finished), so preemptive actions to avoid SLA violations cannot be taken or/and are expensive to perform. Furthermore, these SLAs are sometimes described on a long term basis (frame agreements), and related SLAs can appear for a shorter term (specific agreements) and the analysis of the validity among them is complex to perform on runtime. In this dissertation, we aim at partially automate the management of SLAs in noncomputational services. On the one hand, we suggest that existing models for computational services can be extended to non computational services and enable the description of the service operative and their guarantees. And, on the other hand, we provide a design for operations to partially support the SLA Lifecycle, based on the previous models. Specifically, these operations are mainly focused on the deployment and fulfillment stages of the SLA. Therefore, the contributions of this dissertation are three. First, (A) providing a model to describe Service Level Agreements of non computational services, as an extension of iAgree, an existing model for SLAs of computational services. Second side, (B) supporting the SLA Lifecycle with the design of the aforementioned operations (service configuration based on SLA and monitoring of SLA) and implementing a reference architecture for such operations. And, lastly, (C) providing a model for frame and specific agreements which relates their terms and formalises the analysis operations among them. Other related operations of the service lifecycle as the management of resources to improve service performance or the use of novel techniques (such as machine learning) to predict the SLA accomplishment are out of the scope of this thesis but planned as future line of extension. The current dissertation has been based on real SLAs from different domains, such as Transport & Logistics, public Cloud providers or IT Maintenance outsourcing, which have been used to validate the proposal. And, furthermore, the contributions have been applied in the context of real IT Maintenance outsourcing projects

    SERVICE-BASED AUTOMATION OF SOFTWARE CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES

    The reuse of software units, such as classes, components and services require professional knowledge to be performed. Today a multiplicity of different software unit technologies, supporting tools, and related activities used in reuse processes exist. Each of these relevant reuse elements may also include a high number of variations and may differ in the level and quality of necessary reuse knowledge. In such an environment of increasing variations and, therefore, an increasing need for knowledge, software engineers must obtain such knowledge to be able to perform software unit reuse activities. Today many different reuse activities exist for a software unit. Some typical knowledge intensive activities are: transformation, integration, and deployment. In addition to the problem of the amount of knowledge required for such activities, other difficulties also exist. The global industrial environment makes it challenging to identify sources of, and access to, knowledge. Typically, such sources (e.g., repositories) are made to search and retrieve information about software unitsand not about the required reuse activity knowledge for a special unit. Additionally, the knowledge has to be learned by inexperienced software engineers and, therefore, to be interpreted. This interpretation may lead to variations in the reuse result and can differ from the estimated result of the knowledge creator. This makes it difficult to exchange knowledge between software engineers or global teams. Additionally, the reuse results of reuse activities have to be repeatable and sustainable. In such a scenario, the knowledge about software reuse activities has to be exchanged without the above mentioned problems by an inexperienced software engineer. The literature shows a lack of techniques to store and subsequently distribute relevant reuse activity knowledge among software engineers. The central aim of this thesis is to enable inexperienced software engineers to use knowledge required to perform reuse activities without experiencing the aforementioned problems. The reuse activities: transformation, integration, and deployment, have been selected as the foundation for the research. Based on the construction level of handling a software unit, these activities are called Software Construction Activities (SCAcs) throughout the research. To achieve the aim, specialised software construction activity models have been created and combined with an abstract software unit model. As a result, different SCAc knowledge is described and combined with different software unit artefacts needed by the SCAcs. Additionally, the management (e.g., the execution of an SCAc) will be provided in a service-oriented environment. Because of the focus on reuse activities, an approach which avoids changing the knowledge level of software engineers and the abstraction view on software units and activities, the object of the investigation differs from other approaches which aim to solve the insufficient reuse activity knowledge problem. The research devised novel abstraction models to describe SCAcs as knowledge models related to the relevant information of software units. The models and the focused environment have been created using standard technologies. As a result, these were realised easily in a real world environment. Softwareengineers were able to perform single SCAcs without having previously acquired the necessary knowledge. The risk of failing reuse decreases because single activities can be performed. The analysis of the research results is based on a case study. An example of a reuse environmenthas been created and tested in a case study to prove the operational capability of the approach. The main result of the research is a proven concept enabling inexperienced software engineers to reuse software units by reusing SCAcs. The research shows the reduction in time for reuse and a decrease of learning effort is significant
