    Phase shift optimization algorithm for achievable rate maximization in reconfigurable intelligent surface-assisted THz communications

    Terahertz (THz) band communications are considered a crucial technology to support future applications, such as ultra-high bit rate wireless local area networks, in the next generation of wireless communication systems. In this work, we consider an ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (UM-MIMO) THz communication system operating in a typical indoor scenario where the direct link between the transmitter and receiver is obstructed due to surrounding obstacles. To help establish communication, we assume the aid of a nearby reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) whose phase shifts can be adjusted. To configure the individual phase shifts of the RIS elements, we formulate the problem as a constrained achievable rate maximization. Due to the typical large dimensions of this optimization problem, we apply the accelerated proximal gradient (APG) method, which results in a low complexity algorithm that copes with the non-convex phase shift constraint through simple element-wise normalization. Our numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm even when considering realistic discrete phase shifts’ quantization and imperfect channel knowledge. Furthermore, comparison against existing alternatives reveals improvements between 30% and 120% in terms of range, for a reference rate of 100 Gbps when using the proposed approach with only 81 RIS elements.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Design of a Multipurpose Photonic Chip Architecture for THz Dual-Comb Spectrometers

    This article belongs to the Special Issue Terahertz Sensing and Imaging Technologies.In this work, we present a multipurpose photonic integrated circuit capable of generating multiheterodyne complex Dual-Combs (DC) THz signals. Our work focuses on translating the functionality of an electro-optic tunable DC system into a photonic chip employing standard building blocks to ensure the scalability and cost efficiency of the integrated device. The architecture we analyze for integration is based on three stages: a seed comb, a mode selection stage and a DC stage. This final DC stage includes a frequency shifter, a key element to improve the final detection of the THz signals and obtain real-time operation. This investigation covers three key aspects: (1) a solution for comb line selection on GHz spaced combs using OIL or OPLL on photonic chips is studied and evaluated, (2) a simple and versatile scheme to produce a frequency shift using the double sideband suppressed carrier modulation technique and an asymmetric Mach Zehnder Interferometer to filter one of the sidebands is proposed, and (3) a multipurpose architecture that can offer a versatile effective device, moving from application-specific PICs to general-purpose PICs. Using the building blocks (BBs) available from an InP-based foundry, we obtained simulations that offer a high-quality Dual-Comb frequency shifted signal with a side mode suppression ratio around 21 dB, and 41 dB after photodetection with an intermediate frequency of 1 MHz. We tested our system to generate a Dual-Comb with 10 kHz of frequency spacing and an OOK modulation with 5 Gbps which can be down-converted to the THz range by a square law detector. It is also important to note that the presented architecture is multipurpose and can also be applied to THz communications.     Dynamic vs dedicated automation systems - a study in large structure assembly

    The manufacturing industry needs to increase productivity and flexibility to stay competitive. This requires more adaptable and versatile production capabilities. It is expected that dynamic systems, consisting of mobile robots, will be particularly prominent in manufacturing environments where it is difficult to move components and products in a flexible manner. This paper compares the relative advantages of a dynamic, mobile robot-based system with traditional dedicated automation systems. The study uses simulations to evaluate several representative scenarios with different product supply bottlenecks, interference among mobile robots and mixes of products inspired by the aerospace industry. The results show that mobility enables higher resource utilisation and increased flexibility. This highlights the potential operational advantages mobile robot-based systems would offer and gives clear justification to continue the development of dynamic, self-organising production systems based on mobile robots

    Multi-Factor Authentication: A Survey

    Today, digitalization decisively penetrates all the sides of the modern society. One of the key enablers to maintain this process secure is authentication. It covers many different areas of a hyper-connected world, including online payments, communications, access right management, etc. This work sheds light on the evolution of authentication systems towards Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) starting from Single-Factor Authentication (SFA) and through Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). Particularly, MFA is expected to be utilized for human-to-everything interactions by enabling fast, user-friendly, and reliable authentication when accessing a service. This paper surveys the already available and emerging sensors (factor providers) that allow for authenticating a user with the system directly or by involving the cloud. The corresponding challenges from the user as well as the service provider perspective are also reviewed. The MFA system based on reversed Lagrange polynomial within Shamir’s Secret Sharing (SSS) scheme is further proposed to enable more flexible authentication. This solution covers the cases of authenticating the user even if some of the factors are mismatched or absent. Our framework allows for qualifying the missing factors by authenticating the user without disclosing sensitive biometric data to the verification entity. Finally, a vision of the future trends in MFA is discussed.Peer reviewe

    Load based cell selection algorithm for Digital Mobile Radio

The cell selection is very important for digital mobile radio based systems to improve system performance in terms of delay and bit error rate. In this work, we propose an efficient cell selection algorithm for Digital Mobile Radio. In the proposed algorithm, each user selects the base station according to the proposed utility value determined based on both cell load and signal-to-interference-noise ratio. The goal of the proposed algorithm is to balance the distribution of the users among the cells to reduce the waiting time for connection while establishing reliable transmission link.     Coverage, Rate, and Last Hop Selection in Multi-Hop Communications in Highway Scenarios

    The recent 3GPP initiative to extend IAB technology to mobile nodes in recently stated Release 18 opens up new opportunities for services operators in highway scenarios, where the extreme density of base stations (BS) is required to deliver uninterrupted coverage. The latter problem is specifically important for millimeter wave (mmWave) and future sub-terahertz (sub-THz) deployments. However, in such systems, there are inherent trade-offs between the rate provided over the multi-hop chain, the so-called “bridge”, and the inter-site distance. One of the critical factors involved in this trade-off is the choice of the last hop. In this paper, we utilize realistic channel measurements at 300 GHz to develop a framework characterizing the above-mentioned trade-off. Then, we proceed proposing a simple technique to maximize the latter by addressing the “last-hop problem” and compare its performance to the set of alternative solutions. Our numerical results illustrate that bumper location is better in terms of relaying communication distance. Furthermore, the proposed last hop selection strategies allow for extreme performance gains in terms of data rate as compared to the traditional approaches reaching 100% for large ISD and 400–500% for small ISDs. In absolute numbers, the proposed relying with the last hop selection strategy allows for reducing the required BS density along the highways by 15–30% depending on the vehicle density and required level of connectivity

    Review of three-dimensional human-computer interaction with focus on the leap motion controller

    Modern hardware and software development has led to an evolution of user interfaces from command-line to natural user interfaces for virtual immersive environments. Gestures imitating real-world interaction tasks increasingly replace classical two-dimensional interfaces based on Windows/Icons/Menus/Pointers (WIMP) or touch metaphors. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to survey the state-of-the-art Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) techniques with a focus on the special field of three-dimensional interaction. This includes an overview of currently available interaction devices, their applications of usage and underlying methods for gesture design and recognition. Focus is on interfaces based on the Leap Motion Controller (LMC) and corresponding methods of gesture design and recognition.     Políticas de Copyright de Publicações Científicas em Repositórios Institucionais: O Caso do INESC TEC

    A progressiva transformação das práticas científicas, impulsionada pelo desenvolvimento das novas Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC), têm possibilitado aumentar o acesso à informação, caminhando gradualmente para uma abertura do ciclo de pesquisa. Isto permitirá resolver a longo prazo uma adversidade que se tem colocado aos investigadores, que passa pela existência de barreiras que limitam as condições de acesso, sejam estas geográficas ou financeiras. Apesar da produção científica ser dominada, maioritariamente, por grandes editoras comerciais, estando sujeita às regras por estas impostas, o Movimento do Acesso Aberto cuja primeira declaração pública, a Declaração de Budapeste (BOAI), é de 2002, vem propor alterações significativas que beneficiam os autores e os leitores. Este Movimento vem a ganhar importância em Portugal desde 2003, com a constituição do primeiro repositório institucional a nível nacional. Os repositórios institucionais surgiram como uma ferramenta de divulgação da produção científica de uma instituição, com o intuito de permitir abrir aos resultados da investigação, quer antes da publicação e do próprio processo de arbitragem (preprint), quer depois (postprint), e, consequentemente, aumentar a visibilidade do trabalho desenvolvido por um investigador e a respetiva instituição. O estudo apresentado, que passou por uma análise das políticas de copyright das publicações científicas mais relevantes do INESC TEC, permitiu não só perceber que as editoras adotam cada vez mais políticas que possibilitam o auto-arquivo das publicações em repositórios institucionais, como também que existe todo um trabalho de sensibilização a percorrer, não só para os investigadores, como para a instituição e toda a sociedade. A produção de um conjunto de recomendações, que passam pela implementação de uma política institucional que incentive o auto-arquivo das publicações desenvolvidas no âmbito institucional no repositório, serve como mote para uma maior valorização da produção científica do INESC TEC.The progressive transformation of scientific practices, driven by the development of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which made it possible to increase access to information, gradually moving towards an opening of the research cycle. This opening makes it possible to resolve, in the long term, the adversity that has been placed on researchers, which involves the existence of barriers that limit access conditions, whether geographical or financial. Although large commercial publishers predominantly dominate scientific production and subject it to the rules imposed by them, the Open Access movement whose first public declaration, the Budapest Declaration (BOAI), was in 2002, proposes significant changes that benefit the authors and the readers. This Movement has gained importance in Portugal since 2003, with the constitution of the first institutional repository at the national level. Institutional repositories have emerged as a tool for disseminating the scientific production of an institution to open the results of the research, both before publication and the preprint process and postprint, increase the visibility of work done by an investigator and his or her institution. The present study, which underwent an analysis of the copyright policies of INESC TEC most relevant scientific publications, allowed not only to realize that publishers are increasingly adopting policies that make it possible to self-archive publications in institutional repositories, all the work of raising awareness, not only for researchers but also for the institution and the whole society. The production of a set of recommendations, which go through the implementation of an institutional policy that encourages the self-archiving of the publications developed in the institutional scope in the repository, serves as a motto for a greater appreciation of the scientific production of INESC TEC
