Internet of Things-aided Smart Grid: Technologies, Architectures, Applications, Prototypes, and Future Research Directions
Traditional power grids are being transformed into Smart Grids (SGs) to
address the issues in existing power system due to uni-directional information
flow, energy wastage, growing energy demand, reliability and security. SGs
offer bi-directional energy flow between service providers and consumers,
involving power generation, transmission, distribution and utilization systems.
SGs employ various devices for the monitoring, analysis and control of the
grid, deployed at power plants, distribution centers and in consumers' premises
in a very large number. Hence, an SG requires connectivity, automation and the
tracking of such devices. This is achieved with the help of Internet of Things
(IoT). IoT helps SG systems to support various network functions throughout the
generation, transmission, distribution and consumption of energy by
incorporating IoT devices (such as sensors, actuators and smart meters), as
well as by providing the connectivity, automation and tracking for such
devices. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on IoT-aided SG
systems, which includes the existing architectures, applications and prototypes
of IoT-aided SG systems. This survey also highlights the open issues,
challenges and future research directions for IoT-aided SG systems
Data Communication in Internet of Things: Vision, Challenges and Future Direction
Ubiquitous technologies based heterogeneous networks has opened a new paradigm of technologies, which are enabled with various different objects called Internet of things (IoT). This field opens new door for innovative and advance patterns with considerable potential advantages in the shape of plethora of monitoring and infotainment applications around us. Data communication is one of the significant area of research in IoT due to its diverse network topologies, where diverse gadgets and devices have integrated and connected with each other. In order to communicate among devices and users, routing should be relible, secure and efficient. Due to diverse and hetrogenous netwok environment, the most of the existing routing solutions do not provide all quality of services requirement in the network. In this paper, we discuss the existing routing trend in IoT, vision and current challenges. This paper also elaborates the technologies and domains to drive this field for future perspectives. The paper concludes with discussion and main points for new researchers in terms of routing to understand about current situation in IoT
Benefits and Challenges of Internet of Things for Telecommunication Networks
Recently, Internet of things (IoTs) has become the main issue in designing monitoring systems such as smart environments, smart cars, and smart wearable devices. IoTs has transformed the life of people to be more adaptable and intelligent. For example, in a healthcare monitoring system, using smart devices will improve the performance of doctors, nurses, patients, and the healthcare industry. The IoTs revolution is known as the fourth industrial revolution and would change the way humans interact with machines and lead the way to a high-technology machine-to-machine interaction. In fact, almost every device around us would be connected to Internet, collecting and exchanging data with other devices on the cloud. In this chapter, we will introduce the benefits of IoTs on telecommunication networks and its challenges to give a complete overview for researchers to know how to improve our life and society by building smart IoTs systems
Managed ecosystems of networked objects
Small embedded devices such as sensors and actuators will become the cornerstone of the Future Internet. To this end, generic, open and secure communication and service platforms are needed in order to be able to exploit the new business opportunities these devices bring. In this paper, we evaluate the current efforts to integrate sensors and actuators into the Internet and identify the limitations at the level of cooperation of these Internet-connected objects and the possible intelligence at the end points. As a solution, we propose the concept of Managed Ecosystem of Networked Objects, which aims to create a smart network architecture for groups of Internet-connected objects by combining network virtualization and clean-slate end-to-end protocol design. The concept maps to many real-life scenarios and should empower application developers to use sensor data in an easy and natural way. At the same time, the concept introduces many new challenging research problems, but their realization could offer a meaningful contribution to the realization of the Internet of Things
Internet of Things Architectures, Technologies, Applications, Challenges, and Future Directions for Enhanced Living Environments and Healthcare Systems: A Review
Internet of Things (IoT) is an evolution of the Internet and has been gaining increased
attention from researchers in both academic and industrial environments. Successive technological
enhancements make the development of intelligent systems with a high capacity for communication
and data collection possible, providing several opportunities for numerous IoT applications,
particularly healthcare systems. Despite all the advantages, there are still several open issues
that represent the main challenges for IoT, e.g., accessibility, portability, interoperability, information
security, and privacy. IoT provides important characteristics to healthcare systems, such as availability,
mobility, and scalability, that o er an architectural basis for numerous high technological healthcare
applications, such as real-time patient monitoring, environmental and indoor quality monitoring,
and ubiquitous and pervasive information access that benefits health professionals and patients.
The constant scientific innovations make it possible to develop IoT devices through countless services
for sensing, data fusing, and logging capabilities that lead to several advancements for enhanced
living environments (ELEs). This paper reviews the current state of the art on IoT architectures for
ELEs and healthcare systems, with a focus on the technologies, applications, challenges, opportunities,
open-source platforms, and operating systems. Furthermore, this document synthesizes the existing
body of knowledge and identifies common threads and gaps that open up new significant and
challenging future research directions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
