    Performance Analysis of Sidelink 5G-V2X Mode 2 through an Open-Source Simulator

    The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has recently published a new set of specifications to enable advanced driving applications in fifth generation (5G) vehicle-to-everything (V2X) scenarios, with particular effort dedicated to the sidelink resource allocation in the autonomous mode, named Mode 2. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of Mode 2 performance via an open-source system-level simulator, which implements the 5G New Radio (NR) flexible numerology and physical layer aspects together with the newly specified sidelink resource allocation modes for V2X communications and different data traffic patterns. Results collected through extensive simulation campaigns, under a wide variety of vehicle density, data transmission settings and traffic patterns, showcase the effects of the new 5G-V2X features on the sidelink resource allocation performance and provide some insights into possible ways to further improve Mode 2 performance

    D2D-based Cooperative Positioning Paradigm for Future Wireless Systems: A Survey

    Emerging communication network applications require a location accuracy of less than 1m in more than 95% of the service area. For this purpose, 5G New Radio (NR) technology is designed to facilitate high-accuracy continuous localization. In 5G systems, the existence of high-density small cells and the possibility of the device-to-device (D2D) communication between mobile terminals paves the way for cooperative positioning applications. From the standardization perspective, D2D technology is already under consideration (5G NR Release 16) for ultra-dense networks enabling cooperative positioning and is expected to achieve the ubiquitous positioning of below one-meter accuracy, thereby fulfilling the 5G requirements. In this survey, the strengths and weaknesses of D2D as an enabling technology for cooperative cellular positioning are analyzed (including two D2D approaches to perform cooperative positioning); lessons learned and open issues are highlighted to serve as guidelines for future research

    DSRC Versus LTE-V2X: Empirical Performance Analysis of Direct Vehicular Communication Technologies

    Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication systems have an eminence potential to improve road safety and optimize traffic flow by broadcasting Basic Safety Messages (BSMs). Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC) and LTE Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) are two candidate technologies to enable V2V communication. DSRC relies on the IEEE 802.11p standard for its PHY and MAC layer while LTE-V2X is based on 3GPP’s Release 14 and operates in a distributed manner in the absence of cellular infrastructure. There has been considerable debate over the relative advantages and disadvantages of DSRC and LTE-V2X, aiming to answer the fundamental question of which technology is most effective in real-world scenarios for various road safety and traffic efficiency applications. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of these two technologies (i.e., DSRC and LTE-V2X) and related works. More specifically, we study the PHY and MAC layer of both technologies in the survey study and compare the PHY layer performance using a variety of field tests. First, we provide a summary of each technology and highlight the limitations of each in supporting V2X applications. Then, we examine their performance based on different metrics

    Signaling Design for Cooperative Resource Allocation and its Impact to Reliability

    Decentralized cooperative resource allocation schemes for robotic swarms are essential to enable high reliability in high throughput data exchanges. These cooperative schemes require control signaling with the aim to avoid half-duplex problems at the receiver and mitigate interference. We propose two cooperative resource allocation schemes, device sequential and group scheduling, and introduce a control signaling design. We observe that failure in the reception of these control signals leads to non-cooperative behavior and to significant performance degradation. The cause of these failures are identified and specific countermeasures are proposed and evaluated. We compare the proposed resource allocation schemes against the NR sidelink mode 2 resource allocation and show that even though signaling has an important impact on the resource allocation performance, our proposed device sequential and group scheduling resource allocation schemes improve reliability by an order of magnitude compared to sidelink mode 2
