    Interval simulation: raising the level of abstraction in architectural simulation

    Detailed architectural simulators suffer from a long development cycle and extremely long evaluation times. This longstanding problem is further exacerbated in the multi-core processor era. Existing solutions address the simulation problem by either sampling the simulated instruction stream or by mapping the simulation models on FPGAs; these approaches achieve substantial simulation speedups while simulating performance in a cycle-accurate manner This paper proposes interval simulation which rakes a completely different approach: interval simulation raises the level of abstraction and replaces the core-level cycle-accurate simulation model by a mechanistic analytical model. The analytical model estimates core-level performance by analyzing intervals, or the timing between two miss events (branch mispredictions and TLB/cache misses); the miss events are determined through simulation of the memory hierarchy, cache coherence protocol, interconnection network and branch predictor By raising the level of abstraction, interval simulation reduces both development time and evaluation time. Our experimental results using the SPEC CPU2000 and PARSEC benchmark suites and the MS multi-core simulator show good accuracy up to eight cores (average error of 4.6% and max error of 11% for the multi-threaded full-system workloads), while achieving a one order of magnitude simulation speedup compared to cycle-accurate simulation. Moreover interval simulation is easy to implement: our implementation of the mechanistic analytical model incurs only one thousand lines of code. Its high accuracy, fast simulation speed and ease-of-use make interval simulation a useful complement to the architect's toolbox for exploring system-level and high-level micro-architecture trade-offs

This desire has motivated the industry to explore emerging Non-Volatile Memory (e.g., 3D XPoint) and the high-density DRAM (e.g., Managed DRAM Solution). Since such memory technologies increase the density at the cost of longer latency, lower bandwidth, or both, it is essential to use them with fast memory (e.g., conventional DRAM) to which hot pages are transferred at runtime. Nonetheless, we observe that page transfers to fast memory often block memory channels from servicing memory requests from applications for a long period. This in turn significantly increases the high-percentile response time of latency-sensitive applications. In this thesis, we propose a high-density managed DRAM architecture, dubbed 3D-XPath for applications demanding both low latency and high capacity for memory. 3D-XPath DRAM stacks conventional DRAM dies with high-density DRAM dies explored in this thesis and connects these DRAM dies with 3D-XPath. Especially, 3D-XPath allows unused memory channels to service memory requests from applications when primary channels supposed to handle the memory requests are blocked by page transfers at given moments, considerably increasing the high-percentile response time. This can also improve the throughput of applications frequently copying memory blocks between kernel and user memory spaces. Our evaluation shows that 3D-XPath DRAM decreases high-percentile response time of latency-sensitive applications by โˆผ30% while improving the throughput of an I/O-intensive applications by โˆผ39%, compared with DRAM without 3D-XPath. Recent computer systems are evolving toward the integration of more CPU cores into a single socket, which require higher memory bandwidth and capacity. Increasing the number of channels per socket is a common solution to the bandwidth demand and to better utilize these increased channels, data bus width is reduced and burst length is increased. However, this longer burst length brings increased DRAM access latency. On the memory capacity side, process scaling has been the answer for decades, but cell capacitance now limits how small a cell could be. 3D stacked memory solves this problem by stacking dies on top of other dies. We made a key observation in real multicore machine that multiple memory controllers are always not fully utilized on SPEC CPU 2006 rate benchmark. To bring these idle channels into play, we proposed memory channel sharing architecture to boost peak bandwidth of one memory channel and reduce the burst latency on 3D stacked memory. By channel sharing, the total performance on multi-programmed workloads and multi-threaded workloads improved up to respectively 4.3% and 3.6% and the average read latency reduced up to 8.22% and     Optimization-based power and thermal management for dark silicon aware 3D chip multiprocessors using heterogeneous cache hierarchy

    Management of a problem recently known as โ€œdark siliconโ€ is a new challenge in multicore designs. Prior innovative studies have addressed the dark silicon problem in the fields of power-efficient core design. However, addressing dark silicon challenges in uncore component designs such as cache hierarchy, on-chip interconnect etc. that consume significant portion of the on-chip power consumption is largely unexplored. In this paper, for the first time, we propose an integrated approach which considers the impact of power consumption of core and uncore components simultaneously to improve multi/many-core performance in the dark silicon era. The proposed approach dynamically (1) predicts the changing program behavior on each core; (2) re-determines frequency/voltage, cache capacity and technology in each level of the cache hierarchy based on the program's scalability in order to satisfy the power and temperature constraints. In the proposed architecture, for future chip-multiprocessors (CMPs), we exploit emerging technologies such as non-volatile memories (NVMs) and 3D techniques to combat dark silicon. Also, for the first time, we propose a detailed power model which is useful for future dark silicon CMPs power modeling. Experimental results on SPEC 2000/2006 benchmarks show that the proposed method improves throughput by about 54.3% and energy-delay product by about 61% on average, respectively, in comparison with the conventional CMP architecture with homogenous cache system.     Fast simulation techniques for microprocessor design space exploration

    Designing a microprocessor is extremely time-consuming. Computer architects heavily rely on architectural simulators, e.g., to drive high-level design decisions during early stage design space exploration. The benefit of architectural simulators is that they yield relatively accurate performance results, are highly parameterizable and are very flexible to use. The downside, however, is that they are at least three or four orders of magnitude slower than real hardware execution. The current trend towards multicore processors exacerbates the problem; as the number of cores on a multicore processor increases, simulation speed has become a major concern in computer architecture research and development. In this dissertation, we propose and evaluate two simulation techniques that reduce the simulation time significantly: statistical simulation and interval simulation. Statistical simulation speeds up the simulation by reducing the number of dynamically executed instructions. First, we collect a number of program execution characteristics into a statistical profile. From this profile we can generate a synthetic trace that exhibits the same execution behavior but which has a much shorter trace length as compared to the original trace. Simulating this synthetic trace then yields a performance estimate. Interval simulation raises the level of abstraction in architectural simulation; it replaces the core-level cycle-accurate simulation model by a mechanistic analytical model. The analytical model builds on insights from interval analysis: miss events divide the smooth streaming of instructions into so called intervals. The model drives the timing by analyzing the type of the miss events and their latencies, instead of tracking the individual instructions as they propagate through the pipeline stages
