    Efficient 3D data compression through parameterization of free-form surface patches

    This paper presents a new method for 3D data compression based on parameterization of surface patches. The technique is applied to data that can be defined as single valued functions; this is the case for 3D patches obtained using standard 3D scanners. The method defines a number of mesh cutting planes and the intersection of planes on the mesh defines a set of sampling points. These points contain an explicit structure that allows us to define parametrically both x and y coordinates. The z values are interpolated using high degree polynomials and results show that compressions over 99% are achieved while preserving the quality of the mesh

    Real-time 3D Face Recognition using Line Projection and Mesh Sampling

    The main contribution of this paper is to present a novel method for automatic 3D face recognition based on sampling a 3D mesh structure in the presence of noise. A structured light method using line projection is employed where a 3D face is reconstructed from a single 2D shot. The process from image acquisition to recognition is described with focus on its real-time operation. Recognition results are presented and it is demonstrated that it can perform recognition in just over one second per subject in continuous operation mode and thus, suitable for real time operation

    Performance Evaluation of Vision-Based Algorithms for MAVs

    An important focus of current research in the field of Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) is to increase the safety of their operation in general unstructured environments. Especially indoors, where GPS cannot be used for localization, reliable algorithms for localization and mapping of the environment are necessary in order to keep an MAV airborne safely. In this paper, we compare vision-based real-time capable methods for localization and mapping and point out their strengths and weaknesses.     A Novel Framework for Highlight Reflectance Transformation Imaging

    We propose a novel pipeline and related software tools for processing the multi-light image collections (MLICs) acquired in different application contexts to obtain shape and appearance information of captured surfaces, as well as to derive compact relightable representations of them. Our pipeline extends the popular Highlight Reflectance Transformation Imaging (H-RTI) framework, which is widely used in the Cultural Heritage domain. We support, in particular, perspective camera modeling, per-pixel interpolated light direction estimation, as well as light normalization correcting vignetting and uneven non-directional illumination. Furthermore, we propose two novel easy-to-use software tools to simplify all processing steps. The tools, in addition to support easy processing and encoding of pixel data, implement a variety of visualizations, as well as multiple reflectance-model-fitting options.     La tesi presenta un nuovo approccio per la stima di Surface Light Field di oggetti reali, a partire da sequenze video acquisite in condizioni di illuminazione fisse e non controllate. Il metodo proposto si basa sulla separazione delle due componenti principali dell'apparenza superficiale dell'oggetto: la componente diffusiva, modellata come colore RGB, e la componente speculare, approssimata mediante un modello parametrico funzione della posizione dell'osservatore. L'apparenza superficiale ricostruita permette una visualizzazione fotorealistica e in real-time dell'oggetto al variare della posizione dell'osservatore, consentendo una navigazione 3D interattiva
