A future for intelligent autonomous ocean observing systems
Ocean scientists have dreamed of and recently started to realize an ocean observing revolution with autonomous observing platforms and sensors. Critical questions to be answered by such autonomous systems are where, when, and what to sample for optimal information, and how to optimally reach the sampling locations. Definitions, concepts, and progress towards answering these questions using quantitative predictions and fundamental principles are presented. Results in reachability and path planning, adaptive sampling, machine learning, and teaming machines with scientists are overviewed. The integrated use of differential equations and theory from varied disciplines is emphasized. The results provide an inference engine and knowledge base for expert autonomous observing systems. They are showcased using a set of recent at-sea campaigns and realistic simulations. Real-time experiments with identical autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in the Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound region first show that our predicted time-optimal paths were faster than shortest distance paths. Deterministic and probabilistic reachability and path forecasts issued and validated for gliders and floats in the northern Arabian Sea are then presented. Novel Bayesian adaptive sampling for hypothesis testing and optimal learning are finally shown to forecast the observations most informative to estimate the accuracy of model formulations, the values of ecosystem parameters and dynamic fields, and the presence of Lagrangian Coherent Structures
Cooperative Localization in Mobile Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks
Die großflächige Erkundung und Überwachung von Tiefseegebieten gewinnt mehr und mehr an Bedeutung für Industrie und Wissenschaft. Diese schwer zugänglichen Areale in der Tiefsee können nur mittels Teams unbemannter Tauchbote effizient erkundet werden. Aufgrund der hohen Kosten, war bisher ein Einsatz von mehreren autonomen Unterwasserfahrzeugen (AUV) wirtschaftlich undenkbar, wodurch AUV-Teams nur in Simulationen erforscht werden konnten. In den letzten Jahren konnte jedoch eine Entwicklung hin zu günstigeren und robusteren AUVs beobachtet werden. Somit wird der Einsatz von AUV-Teams in Zukunft zu einer realen Option. Die wachsende Nachfrage nach Technologien zur Unterwasseraufklärung und Überwachung konnte diese Entwicklung noch zusätzlich beschleunigen.
Eine der größten technischen Hürden für tief tauchende AUVs ist die Unterwasserlokalisierug. Satelitengestützte Navigation ist in der Tiefe nicht möglich, da Radiowellen bereits nach wenigen Metern im Wasser stark an Intensität verlieren. Daher müssen neue Ansätze für die Unterwasserlokalisierung entwickelt werden die sich auch für Fahrzeugenverbände skalieren lassen. Der Einsatz von AUV-Teams ermöglicht nicht nur völlig neue Möglichkeiten der Kooperation, sondern erlaubt auch jedem einzelnen AUV von den Navigationsdaten der anderen Fahrzeuge im
Verband zu profitieren, um die eigene Lokalisierung zu verbessern.
In dieser Arbeit wird ein kooperativer Lokalisierungsansatz vorgestellt, welcher auf dem Nachrichtenaustausch durch akustische Ultra-Short Base-Line (USBL) Modems basiert. Ein akustisches Modem ermöglicht die Übertragung von Datenpaketen im Wasser, wärend ein USBL-Sensor die Richtung einer akustischen Quelle bestimmen kann. Durch die Kombination von Modem und Sensor entsteht ein wichtiges Messinstrument für die Unterwasserlokalisierung. Wenn ein Fahrzeug ein Datenpaket mit seiner eignen Position aussendet, können andere Fahrzeuge mit einem USBL-Modem diese Nachricht empfangen. In Verbindung mit der Richtungsmessung zur Quelle, können diese Daten von einem Empfangenden AUV verwendet werden, um seine eigene Positionsschatzung zu verbessern. Diese Arbeit schlägt einen Ansatz zur Fusionierung der empfangenen Nachricht mit der Richtungsmessung vor, welcher auch die jeweiligen Messungenauigkeiten berücksichtigt. Um die Messungenauigkeit des komplexen USBL-Sensors bestimmen zu können, wurde zudem ein detailliertes Sensormodell entwickelt.
Zunächst wurden existierende Ansätze zur kooperativen Lokalisierung (CL) untersucht, um daraus eine Liste von erwünschten Eigenschaften für eine CL abzuleiten. Darauf aufbauend wurde der Deep-Sea Network Lokalisation (DNL) Ansatz entwickelt. Bei DNL handelt es sich um eine CL Methode, bei der die Skalierbarkeit sowie die praktische Anwendbarkeit im Fokus stehen. DNL ist als eine Zwischenschicht konzipiert, welche USBL-Modem und Navigationssystem miteinander verbindet. Es werden dabei Messwerte und Kommunikationsdaten des USBL zu einer Standortbestimmung inklusive Richtungsschätzung fusioniert und an das Navigationssystem weiter geleitet, ähnlich einem GPS-Sensor.
Die Funktionalität von USBL-Modell und DNL konnten evaluiert werden anhand von Messdaten aus Seeerprobungen in der Ostsee sowie im Mittelatlantik. Die Qualität einer CL hangt häufig von vielen unterschiedlichen Faktoren ab. Die Netzwerktopologie muss genauso berücksichtig werden wie die Lokalisierungsfähigkeiten jedes einzelnen Teilnehmers. Auch das Kommunikationsverhalten der einzelnen Teilnehmer bestimmt, welche Informationen im Netzwerk vorhanden sind und hat somit einen starken Einfluss auf die CL. Um diese Einflussfaktoren zu untersuchen, wurden eine Reihe von Szenarien simuliert, in denen Kommunikationsverhalten und Netzwerktopologie für eine Gruppe von AUVs variiert wurden. In diesen Experimenten wurden die AUVs durch ein Oberflächenfahrzeug unterstützt, welches seine geo-referenzierte Position über DNL an die getauchten Fahrzeuge weiter leitete.
Anhand der untersuchten Topologie können die Experimente eingeteilt werden in Single-Hop und Multi-Hop. Single-Hop bedeutet, dass jedes AUV sich in der Sendereichweite des Oberflächenfahrzeugs befindet und dessen Positionsdaten auf direktem Wege erhält. Wie die Ergebnisse der Single-Hop Experimente zeigen, kann der Lokalisierungsfehler der AUVs eingegrenzt werden, wenn man DNL verwendet. Dabei korreliert der Lokalisierungsfehler mit der kombinierten Ungenauigkeit von USBL-Messung und Oberflächenfahrzeugposition.
Bei den Multi-Hop Experimenten wurde die Topologie so geändert, dass sich nur eines der AUVs in direkter Sendereichweite des Oberflächenfahrzeugs befindet. Dieses AUV verbessert seine Position mit den empfangen Daten des Oberflächenfahrzeugs und sendet wiederum seine verbesserte Position an die anderen AUVs. Auch hier konnte gezeigt werden, dass sich der Lokalisierungfehler der Gruppe mit DNL einschränken lässt. Ändert man nun das Schema der Kommunikation so, dass alle AUVs zyklisch ihre Position senden, zeigte sich eine Verschlechterung der Lokalisierungsqualität der Gruppe. Dieses unerwartet Ergebnis konnte auf einen Teil des DNL-Algorithmus zurück geführt werden. Da die verwendete USBL-Klasse nur die Richtung eines Signals misst, nicht jedoch die Entfernung zum Sender, wird in der DNL-Schicht eine Entfernungsschatzung vorgenommen. Wenn die Kommunikation nicht streng unidirektional ist, entsteht eine Ruckkopplungsschleife, was zu fehlerhaften Entfernungsschatzungen führt. Im letzten Experiment wird gezeigt wie sich dieses Problem vermeiden lasst, mithilfe einer relativ neue USBL-Klasse, die sowohl Richtung als auch Entfernung zum Sender misst.
Die zwei wesentlichen Beiträge dieser Arbeit sind das USBL-Model zum einen und zum Anderen, der neue kooperative Lokalisierungsansatz DNL. Mithilfe des Sensormodels lassen sich nicht nur Messabweichungen einer USBL-Messung bestimmen, es kann auch dazu genutzt werden, einige Fehlereinflüsse zu korrigieren. Mit DNL wurde eine skalierbare CL-Methode entwickelt, die sich gut für den den Einsatz bei mobilen Unterwassersensornetzwerken eignet. Durch das Konzept als Zwischenschicht, lasst sich DNL einfach in bestehende Navigationslösungen integrieren, um die Langzeitstabilität der Navigation für große Verbände von tiefgetauchten Fahrzeugen zu gewährleisten. Sowohl USBL-Model als auch DNL sind dabei so ressourcenschonend, dass sie auf dem Computer eines Standard USBL laufen können, ohne die ursprüngliche Funktionalität einzuschränken, was den praktischen Einsatz zusätzlich vereinfacht
Coordinated Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for Surveillance of Targets
PhDThis thesis investigates the coordination approaches of multiple mobile and
autonomous robots, especially resource-limited small-scale UAVs, for the
surveillance of pre-de ned ground targets in a given environment. A key
research issue in surveillance task is the coordination among the robots to
determine the target's time varying locations. The research focuses on two
applications of surveillance: (i) cooperative search of stationary targets, and
(ii) cooperative observation of moving targets. The objective in cooperative
search is to minimize the time and errors in nding the locations of
stationary targets. The objective of cooperative observation is to maximize
the collective time and quality of observation of moving targets.
The thesis presents a survey of the approaches in a larger domain of
multi-robot systems for the surveillance of pre-de ned targets in a given
environment. This survey identi es various factors and application scenarios
that a ect the performance of multi-robot surveillance systems. The
thesis proposes a distributed strategy for merging delayed and incomplete
information, which is a result of sensing and communication limitations,
collected by di erent UAVs. An analytic derivation of the number of required
observations is provided to declare the absence or existence of a
target in a region. This number of required observations is integrated into
an iterative use of Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) and Multiple
Travelling Salesmen Problem (MTSP) for autonomous path planning of
UAVs. Additionally, it performs an exploration of the algorithmic design
space and analyzes the e ects of centralized and distributed coordination
on the cooperative search of stationary targets in the presence of sensing
and communication limitations.
The thesis also proposes the application of UAVs for observing multiple
moving targets with di erent resolutions. A key contribution is to use the
quad-tree data-structure for modelling the environment and movement of
UAVs. This modelling has helped in the dynamic sensor placement of UAVs
to maximize the observation of the number of moving targets as well as the

Virtual Structure Based Formation Tracking of Multiple Wheeled Mobile Robots: An Optimization Perspective
Today, with the increasing development of science and technology, many systems need to be optimized to find the optimal solution of the system. this kind of problem is also called optimization problem. Especially in the formation problem of multi-wheeled mobile robots, the optimization algorithm can help us to find the optimal solution of the formation problem. In this paper, the formation problem of multi-wheeled mobile robots is studied from the point of view of optimization. In order to reduce the complexity of the formation problem, we first put the robots with the same requirements into a group. Then, by using the virtual structure method, the formation problem is reduced to a virtual WMR trajectory tracking problem with placeholders, which describes the expected position of each WMR formation. By using placeholders, you can get the desired track for each WMR. In addition, in order to avoid the collision between multiple WMR in the group, we add an attraction to the trajectory tracking method. Because MWMR in the same team have different attractions, collisions can be easily avoided. Through simulation analysis, it is proved that the optimization model is reasonable and correct. In the last part, the limitations of this model and corresponding suggestions are given
A Dynamical System Approach for Resource-Constrained Mobile Robotics
The revolution of autonomous vehicles has led to the development of robots with abundant sensors, actuators with many degrees of freedom, high-performance computing capabilities, and high-speed communication devices. These robots use a large volume of information from sensors to solve diverse problems. However, this usually leads to a significant modeling burden as well as excessive cost and computational requirements. Furthermore, in some scenarios, sophisticated sensors may not work precisely, the real-time processing power of a robot may be inadequate, the communication among robots may be impeded by natural or adversarial conditions, or the actuation control in a robot may be insubstantial. In these cases, we have to rely on simple robots with limited sensing and actuation, minimal onboard processing, moderate communication, and insufficient memory capacity. This reality motivates us to model simple robots such as bouncing and underactuated robots making use of the dynamical system techniques. In this dissertation, we propose a four-pronged approach for solving tasks in resource-constrained scenarios: 1) Combinatorial filters for bouncing robot localization; 2) Bouncing robot navigation and coverage; 3) Stochastic multi-robot patrolling; and 4) Deployment and planning of underactuated aquatic robots.
First, we present a global localization method for a bouncing robot equipped with only a clock and contact sensors. Space-efficient and finite automata-based combinatorial filters are synthesized to solve the localization task by determining the robot’s pose (position and orientation) in its environment.
Second, we propose a solution for navigation and coverage tasks using single or multiple bouncing robots. The proposed solution finds a navigation plan for a single bouncing robot from the robot’s initial pose to its goal pose with limited sensing. Probabilistic paths from several policies of the robot are combined artfully so that the actual coverage distribution can become as close as possible to a target coverage distribution. A joint trajectory for multiple bouncing robots to visit all the locations of an environment is incrementally generated.
Third, a scalable method is proposed to find stochastic strategies for multi-robot patrolling under an adversarial and communication-constrained environment. Then, we evaluate the vulnerability of our patrolling policies by finding the probability of capturing an adversary for a location in our proposed patrolling scenarios.
Finally, a data-driven deployment and planning approach is presented for the underactuated aquatic robots called drifters that creates the generalized flow pattern of the water, develops a Markov-chain based motion model, and studies the long- term behavior of a marine environment from a flow point-of-view.
In a broad summary, our dynamical system approach is a unique solution to typical robotic tasks and opens a new paradigm for the modeling of simple robotics system
Recent Advances in Multi Robot Systems
To design a team of robots which is able to perform given tasks is a great concern of many members of robotics community. There are many problems left to be solved in order to have the fully functional robot team. Robotics community is trying hard to solve such problems (navigation, task allocation, communication, adaptation, control, ...). This book represents the contributions of the top researchers in this field and will serve as a valuable tool for professionals in this interdisciplinary field. It is focused on the challenging issues of team architectures, vehicle learning and adaptation, heterogeneous group control and cooperation, task selection, dynamic autonomy, mixed initiative, and human and robot team interaction. The book consists of 16 chapters introducing both basic research and advanced developments. Topics covered include kinematics, dynamic analysis, accuracy, optimization design, modelling, simulation and control of multi robot systems
Adaptive and learning-based formation control of swarm robots
Autonomous aerial and wheeled mobile robots play a major role in tasks such as search and rescue, transportation, monitoring, and inspection. However, these operations are faced with a few open challenges including robust autonomy, and adaptive coordination based on the environment and operating conditions, particularly in swarm robots with limited communication and perception capabilities. Furthermore, the computational complexity increases exponentially with the number of robots in the swarm. This thesis examines two different aspects of the formation control problem. On the one hand, we investigate how formation could be performed by swarm robots with limited communication and perception (e.g., Crazyflie nano quadrotor). On the other hand, we explore human-swarm interaction (HSI) and different shared-control mechanisms between human and swarm robots (e.g., BristleBot) for artistic creation. In particular, we combine bio-inspired (i.e., flocking, foraging) techniques with learning-based control strategies (using artificial neural networks) for adaptive control of multi- robots. We first review how learning-based control and networked dynamical systems can be used to assign distributed and decentralized policies to individual robots such that the desired formation emerges from their collective behavior. We proceed by presenting a novel flocking control for UAV swarm using deep reinforcement learning. We formulate the flocking formation problem as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), and consider a leader-follower configuration, where consensus among all UAVs is used to train a shared control policy, and each UAV performs actions based on the local information it collects. In addition, to avoid collision among UAVs and guarantee flocking and navigation, a reward function is added with the global flocking maintenance, mutual reward, and a collision penalty. We adapt deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) with centralized training and decentralized execution to obtain the flocking control policy using actor-critic networks and a global state space matrix. In the context of swarm robotics in arts, we investigate how the formation paradigm can serve as an interaction modality for artists to aesthetically utilize swarms. In particular, we explore particle swarm optimization (PSO) and random walk to control the communication between a team of robots with swarming behavior for musical creation
Multisensor acoustic tracking of fish and seabird behavior around tidal turbine structures in Scotland
Despite rapid development of marine renewable energy, relatively little is known of the immediate and future impacts on the surrounding ecosystems. Quantifying the behavior and distribution of animals around marine renewable energy devices is crucial for understanding, predicting, and potentially mitigating any threats posed by these installations. The Flow and Benthic Ecology 4D (FLOWBEC) autonomous seabed platform integrated an Imagenex multibeam echosounder and a Simrad EK60 multi-frequency echosounder to monitor marine life in a 120◦ sector over ranges up to 50 m, seven to eight times per second. Established target detection algorithms fail within MRE sites, due to high levels of backscatter generated by the turbulent physical dynamics, limiting and biasing analysis to only periods of low current speed. This study presents novel algorithms to extract diving seabirds, fish, and fish schools from the intense backscatter caused by turbulent dynamics in flows of 4ms−1. Filtering, detection, and tracking using a modified nearest neighbor algorithm provide robust tracking of animal behavior using the multibeam echosounder. Independent multifrequency target detection is demonstrated using the EK60 with optimally calculated thresholds, scale-sensitive filters, morphological exclusion, and frequency-response characteristics. This provides sensitive and reliable detection throughout the entire water column and at all flow speeds. Dive profiles, depth preferences, predator–prey interactions, and fish schooling behavior can be analyzed, in conjunction with the hydrodynamic impacts of marine renewable energy devices. Coregistration of targets between the acoustic instruments increases the information available, providing quantitative measures including frequency response from the EK60, and target morphology and behavioral interactions from the multibeam echosounder. The analyses draw on deployments at a tidal energy site in Scotland to compare the presence and absence of renewable energy structures across a range of physical and trophic levels over complete spring-neap tidal cycles. These results can be used to inform how animals forage in these sites and whether individuals face collision risks. This quantitative information can de-risk the licensing process and, with a greater mechanistic understanding at demonstration scales, its predictive power could reduce the monitoring required at future arrays
