    3D Forward and Back-Projection for X-Ray CT Using Separable Footprints

    Iterative methods for 3D image reconstruction have the potential to improve image quality over conventional filtered back projection (FBP) in X-ray computed tomography (CT). However, the computation burden of 3D cone-beam forward and back-projectors is one of the greatest challenges facing practical adoption of iterative methods for X-ray CT. Moreover, projector accuracy is also important for iterative methods. This paper describes two new separable footprint (SF) projector methods that approximate the voxel footprint functions as 2D separable functions. Because of the separability of these footprint functions, calculating their integrals over a detector cell is greatly simplified and can be implemented efficiently. The SF-TR projector uses trapezoid functions in the transaxial direction and rectangular functions in the axial direction, whereas the SF-TT projector uses trapezoid functions in both directions. Simulations and experiments showed that both SF projector methods are more accurate than the distance-driven (DD) projector, which is a current state-of-the-art method in the field. The SF-TT projector is more accurate than the SF-TR projector for rays associated with large cone angles.     Fast GPU-Based Approach to Branchless Distance-Driven Projection and Back-Projection in Cone Beam CT

    Modern CT image reconstruction algorithms rely on projection and back-projection operations to refine an image estimate in iterative image reconstruction. A widely-used state-of-the-art technique is distance-driven projection and back-projection. While the distance-driven technique yields superior image quality in iterative algorithms, it is a computationally demanding process. This has a detrimental effect on the relevance of the algorithms in clinical settings. A few methods have been proposed for enhancing the distance-driven technique in order to take advantage of modern computer hardware. This study explores a two-dimensional extension of the branchless method, which is a technique that does not compromise image quality. The extension of the branchless method is named “pre-projection integration” because it gets a performance boost by integrating the data before the projection and back-projection operations. It was written with Nvidia’s CUDA framework and carefully designed for massively parallel graphics processing units (GPUs). The performance and the image quality of the pre-projection integration method were analyzed. Both projection and back-projection are significantly faster with pre-projection integration. The image quality was analyzed using cone beam CT image reconstruction algorithms within Jeffrey Fessler’s Image Reconstruction Toolbox. Images produced from regularized, iterative image reconstruction algorithms using the pre-projection integration method show no significant artifacts

    Multi-streaming and multi-GPU optimization for a matched pair of Projector and Backprojector

    International audienceIterative reconstruction methods are used in X-ray Computed Tomography in order to improve the quality of reconstruction compared to filtered backprojection methods. However, these methods are computationally expensive due to repeated projection and backprojection operations. Among the possible pairs of projector and backprojector, the Separable Footprint (SF) pair has the advantage to be matched in order to ensure the convergence of the reconstruction algorithm. Nevertheless, this pair implies more computations compared to unmatched pairs commonly used in order to reduce the computation time. In order to speed up this pair, the projector and the backprojector can be parallelized on GPU. Following one of our previous work, in this paper, we propose a new implementation which takes benefits from the factorized calculations of the SF pair in order to increase the number of data handled by each thread. We also describe the adaptation of this implementation for multi-streaming computations. The method is tested on large volumes of size 1024 3 and 2048 3 voxels

    Object-based 3D binary reconstruction from sparse projections in cone beam CT: Comparison of three projection operators

    International audienceWe present herein a level set approach to the X-ray tomography problem with sparse projection data and study the impact of the projection operator on the binary reconstruction accuracy and computation time. The comparison is carried out on three projectors: the Separable Footprint (Trapeze-Trapeze, SF-TT) [3], a classical Raydriven (RD) and a Simplified version of the Distance-Driven (SDD) projector respectively. The performance, are evaluated for each operator, on a binary 3D Shepp-Logan phantom by varying the number of projections from 5 to 13, and considering noise free and noisy cone beam projection data

    Spline driven: high accuracy projectors for tomographic reconstruction from few projections

    International audienceTomographic iterative reconstruction methods need a very thorough modeling of data. This point becomes critical when the number of available projections is limited. At the core of this issue is the projector design, i.e., the numerical model relating the representation of the object of interest to the projections on the detector. Voxel driven and ray driven projection models are widely used for their short execution time in spite of their coarse approximations. Distance driven model has an improved accuracy but makes strong approximations to project voxel basis functions. Cubic voxel basis functions are anisotropic, accurately modeling their projection is, therefore, computationally expensive. Both smoother and more isotropic basis functions better represent the continuous functions and provide simpler projectors. These considerations have led to the development of spherically symmetric volume elements, called blobs. Set apart their isotropy, blobs are often considered too computationally expensive in practice. In this paper, we consider using separable B-splines as basis functions to represent the object, and we propose to approximate the projection of these basis functions by a 2D separable model. When the degree of the B-splines increases, their isotropy improves and projections can be computed regardless of their orientation. The degree and the sampling of the B-splines can be chosen according to a tradeoff between approximation quality and computational complexity. We quantitatively measure the good accuracy of our model and compare it with other projectors, such as the distance-driven and the model proposed by Long et al. From the numerical experiments, we demonstrate that our projector with an improved accuracy better preserves the quality of the reconstruction as the number of projections decreases. Our projector with cubic B-splines requires about twice as many operations as a model based on voxel basis functions. Higher accuracy projectors can be used to improve the resolution of the existing systems, or to reduce the number of projections required to reach a given resolution, potentially reducing the dose absorbed by the patient

    X-ray CT Image Reconstruction on Highly-Parallel Architectures.

    Model-based image reconstruction (MBIR) methods for X-ray CT use accurate models of the CT acquisition process, the statistics of the noisy measurements, and noise-reducing regularization to produce potentially higher quality images than conventional methods even at reduced X-ray doses. They do this by minimizing a statistically motivated high-dimensional cost function; the high computational cost of numerically minimizing this function has prevented MBIR methods from reaching ubiquity in the clinic. Modern highly-parallel hardware like graphics processing units (GPUs) may offer the computational resources to solve these reconstruction problems quickly, but simply "translating" existing algorithms designed for conventional processors to the GPU may not fully exploit the hardware's capabilities. This thesis proposes GPU-specialized image denoising and image reconstruction algorithms. The proposed image denoising algorithm uses group coordinate descent with carefully structured groups. The algorithm converges very rapidly: in one experiment, it denoises a 65 megapixel image in about 1.5 seconds, while the popular Chambolle-Pock primal-dual algorithm running on the same hardware takes over a minute to reach the same level of accuracy. For X-ray CT reconstruction, this thesis uses duality and group coordinate ascent to propose an alternative to the popular ordered subsets (OS) method. Similar to OS, the proposed method can use a subset of the data to update the image. Unlike OS, the proposed method is convergent. In one helical CT reconstruction experiment, an implementation of the proposed algorithm using one GPU converges more quickly than a state-of-the-art algorithm converges using four GPUs. Using four GPUs, the proposed algorithm reaches near convergence of a wide-cone axial reconstruction problem with over 220 million voxels in only 11 minutes.PhDElectrical Engineering: SystemsUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.
