    VCube-PS: A Causal Broadcast Topic-based Publish/Subscribe System

    In this work we present VCube-PS, a topic-based Publish/Subscribe system built on the top of a virtual hypercube-like topology. Membership information and published messages are broadcast to subscribers (members) of a topic group over dynamically built spanning trees rooted at the publisher. For a given topic, the delivery of published messages respects the causal order. VCube-PS was implemented on the PeerSim simulator, and experiments are reported including a comparison with the traditional Publish/Subscribe approach that employs a single rooted static spanning-tree for message distribution. Results confirm the efficiency of VCube-PS in terms of scalability, latency, number and size of messages.Comment: Improved text and performance evaluation.     Privacy Preservation & Security Solutions in Blockchain Network

    Blockchain has seen exponential progress over the past few years, and today its usage extends well beyond cryptocurrencies. Its features, including openness, transparency, secure communication, difficult falsification, and multi-consensus, have made it one of the most valuable technology in the world. In most open blockchain platforms, any node can access the data on the blockchain, which leads to a potential risk of personal information leakage. So the issue of blockchain privacy and security is particularly prominent and has become an important research topic in the field of blockchain. This dissertation mainly summarizes my research on blockchain privacy and security protection issues throughout recent years. We first summarize the security and privacy vulnerabilities in the mining pools of traditional bitcoin networks and some possible protection measures. We then propose a new type of attack: coin hopping attack, in the case of multiple blockchains under an IoT environment. This attack is only feasible in blockchain-based IoT scenarios, and can significantly reduce the operational efficiency of the entire blockchain network in the long run. We demonstrate the feasibility of this attack by theoretical analysis of four different attack models and propose two possible solutions. We also propose an innovative hybrid blockchain crowdsourcing platform solution to settle the performance bottlenecks and various challenges caused by privacy, scalability, and verification efficiency problems of current blockchain-based crowdsourcing systems. We offer flexible task-based permission control and a zero-knowledge proof mechanism in the implementation of smart contracts to flexibly obtain different levels of privacy protection. By performing several tests on Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric, EoS.io blockchains, the performance of the proposed platform consensus under different transaction volumes is verified. At last, we also propose further investigation on the topics of the privacy issues when combining AI with blockchain and propose some defense strategies

    Ensuring Average Recovery with Adversarial Scheduler

    In this paper, we focus on revising a given program so that the average recovery time in the presence of an adversarial scheduler is bounded by a given threshold lambda. Specifically, we consider the scenario where the fault (or other unexpected action) perturbs the program to a state that is outside its set of legitimate states. Starting from this state, the program executes its actions/transitions to recover to legitimate states. However, the adversarial scheduler can force the program to reach one illegitimate state that requires a longer recovery time. To ensure that the average recovery time is less than lambda, we need to remove certain transitions/behaviors. We show that achieving this average response time while removing minimum transitions is NP-hard. In other words, there is a tradeoff between the time taken to synthesize the program and the transitions preserved to reduce the average convergence time. We present six different heuristics and evaluate this tradeoff with case studies. Finally, we note that the average convergence time considered here requires formalization of hyperproperties. Hence, this work also demonstrates feasibility of adding (certain) hyperproperties to an existing program

    Estimation Accuracy on Execution Time of Run-Time Tasks in a Heterogeneous Distributed Environment

    Distributed Computing has achieved tremendous development since cloud computing was proposed in 2006, and played a vital role promoting rapid growth of data collecting and analysis models, e.g., Internet of things, Cyber-Physical Systems, Big Data Analytics, etc. Hadoop has become a data convergence platform for sensor networks. As one of the core components, MapReduce facilitates allocating, processing and mining of collected large-scale data, where speculative execution strategies help solve straggler problems. However, there is still no efficient solution for accurate estimation on execution time of run-time tasks, which can affect task allocation and distribution in MapReduce. In this paper, task execution data have been collected and employed for the estimation. A two-phase regression (TPR) method is proposed to predict the finishing time of each task accurately. Detailed data of each task have drawn interests with detailed analysis report being made. According to the results, the prediction accuracy of concurrent tasksā€™ execution time can be improved, in particular for some regular jobs

    A Systematic Mapping Study of MMOG Backend Architectures

    The advent of utility computing has revolutionized almost every sector of traditional software development. Especially commercial cloud computing services, pioneered by the likes of Amazon, Google and Microsoft, have provided an unprecedented opportunity for the fast and sustainable development of complex distributed systems. Nevertheless, existing models and tools aim primarily for systems where resource usageā€”by humans and bots alikeā€”is logically and physically quite disperse resulting in a low likelihood of conflicting resource access. However, a number of resource-intensive applications, such as Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) and large-scale simulations introduce a requirement for a very large common state with many actors accessing it simultaneously and thus a high likelihood of conflicting resource access. This paper presents a systematic mapping study of the state-of-the-art in software technology aiming explicitly to support the development of MMOGs, a class of large-scale, resource-intensive software systems.By examining the main focus of a diverse set of related publications, we identify a list of criteria that are important for MMOG development. Then, we categorize the selected studies based on the inferred criteria in order to compare their approach, unveil the challenges faced in each of them and reveal research trends that might be present. Finally we attempt to identify research directions which appear promising for enabling the use of standardized technology for this class of systems
