    Off-line computing for experimental high-energy physics

    The needs of experimental high-energy physics for large-scale computing and data handling are explained in terms of the complexity of individual collisions and the need for high statistics to study quantum mechanical processes. The prevalence of university-dominated collaborations adds a requirement for high-performance wide-area networks. The data handling and computational needs of the different types of large experiment, now running or under construction, are evaluated. Software for experimental high-energy physics is reviewed briefly with particular attention to the success of packages written within the discipline. It is argued that workstations and graphics are important in ensuring that analysis codes are correct, and the worldwide networks which support the involvement of remote physicists are described. Computing and data handling are reviewed showing how workstations and RISC processors are rising in importance but have not supplanted traditional mainframe processing. Examples of computing systems constructed within high-energy physics are examined and evaluated

    Planning for Sustainability in Small Municipalities: The Influence of Interest Groups, Growth Patterns, and Institutional Characteristics

    How and why small municipalities promote sustainability through planning efforts is poorly understood. We analyzed ordinances in 451 Maine municipalities and tested theories of policy adoption using regression analysis.We found that smaller communities do adopt programs that contribute to sustainability relevant to their scale and context. In line with the political market theory, we found that municipalities with strong environmental interests, higher growth, and more formal governments were more likely to adopt these policies. Consideration of context and capacity in planning for sustainability will help planners better identify and benefit from collaboration, training, and outreach opportunities

    Probabilistic tsunami hazard assessment based on the Gutenberg–Richter law in eastern Shikoku, Nankai subduction zone, Japan

    Earthquake and tsunami predictions comprise huge uncertainties, thus necessitating probabilistic assessments for the design of defense facilities and urban planning. In recent years, computer development has advanced probabilistic tsunami hazard assessments (PTHAs), where hazard curves show the exceedance probability of the maximum tsunami height. However, owing to the lack of historical and geological tsunami records, this method is generally insufficient for validating the estimated hazard curves. The eastern coast of Shikoku in the Nankai subduction zone, Japan, is suitable for validation because tsunami records from historical Nankai Trough earthquakes are available. This study evaluated PTHAs by comparing the tsunami hazard curves and exceedance frequencies of historical Nankai Trough tsunamis. We considered 3480 earthquake scenarios representing the rupture patterns of past Nankai earthquakes and calculated all tsunamis. The probability of earthquake occurrence was based on the Gutenberg–Richter law. We considered uncertainty in tsunami calculations with astronomical tide variations. The estimated tsunami hazard curves are consistent with the exceedance frequencies obtained from historical tsunamis. In addition, sensitivity tests indicate the significance of the earthquake slip heterogeneity and tsunami defense facilities in PTHAs. We also extended the PTHAs to tsunami inundation maps in high resolution and proposed an effective new method for reducing the tsunami computation load

    The Impact of Information Sharing on Different Performance Indicators in a Multi-Level Supply Chain

    Enterprises can use different methods/principles to obtain competitive advantages. Information sharing (IS) among supply chain (SC) partners is also one of these methods used in enterprises and it has positive effects on overall system performance like reduced inventory level, decreased cost, bullwhip effects and increased profit. In this paper, our aim is to present the impacts of IS on different costs like ordering, holding and penalty costs of each SC member and total system costs in multi SC. We want to show the effects of sharing different types of information simultaneously or separately on SC partners as cost change. Besides, this paper presents the situation of order quantity estimation according to the proximity of actual order quantity in decentralized or centralized demand sharing. A model is developed to determine IS influence on the cost of SC partners. Various IS scenarios are studied in this paper. The customer demand, warehouse order quantity and warehouse-manufacturer lead time are the shared information of scenarios. Results are tested and analysed by using analysis of variance (ANOVA).The findings of this study show that IS especially simultaneously sharing reduces system costs. Lead time sharing provides the lowest cost between other types of sharing. For every system member, holding cost reduces the most during IS. The more accurate demand forecasting is performed in centralized demand sharing compared to decentralized sharing
