    Approximating max-min linear programs with local algorithms

    A local algorithm is a distributed algorithm where each node must operate solely based on the information that was available at system startup within a constant-size neighbourhood of the node. We study the applicability of local algorithms to max-min LPs where the objective is to maximise minkvckvxv\min_k \sum_v c_{kv} x_v subject to vaivxv1\sum_v a_{iv} x_v \le 1 for each ii and xv0x_v \ge 0 for each vv. Here ckv0c_{kv} \ge 0, aiv0a_{iv} \ge 0, and the support sets Vi={v:aiv>0}V_i = \{v : a_{iv} > 0 \}, Vk={v:ckv>0}V_k = \{v : c_{kv}>0 \}, Iv={i:aiv>0}I_v = \{i : a_{iv} > 0 \} and Kv={k:ckv>0}K_v = \{k : c_{kv} > 0 \} have bounded size. In the distributed setting, each agent vv is responsible for choosing the value of xvx_v, and the communication network is a hypergraph H\mathcal{H} where the sets VkV_k and ViV_i constitute the hyperedges. We present inapproximability results for a wide range of structural assumptions; for example, even if Vi|V_i| and Vk|V_k| are bounded by some constants larger than 2, there is no local approximation scheme. To contrast the negative results, we present a local approximation algorithm which achieves good approximation ratios if we can bound the relative growth of the vertex neighbourhoods in H\mathcal{H}.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figure

    A self-stabilizing distributed maximum flow algorithm

    This thesis presents a self-stabilizing distributed maximum flow algorithm for a network G = (V, E), where V is a set of nodes in the network and E is a set of edges in the network. The algorithm has two phases: reset phase and preflow-push phase. Fault-tolerance is achieved by using a self-stabilizing paradigm that uses non-masking fault-tolerance embedded repetitions within the algorithm. Two techniques are used in the algorithm, Counter flushing is used to synchronize the network; both local checking and local correction are used to compute the maximum flow of the network. The algorithm handles catastrophic faults by weeding out false information in the network. A network can start with any arbitrary global state and will recover to a legal global state in finite number of steps. Lastly, the network guarantees to restore the legal configuration from any catastrophic faults

    An Approximate Kernel for Connected Feedback Vertex Set

    The Feedback Vertex Set problem is a fundamental computational problem which has been the subject of intensive study in various domains of algorithmics. In this problem, one is given an undirected graph G and an integer k as input. The objective is to determine whether at most k vertices can be deleted from G such that the resulting graph is acyclic. The study of preprocessing algorithms for this problem has a long and rich history, culminating in the quadratic kernelization of Thomasse [SODA 2010]. However, it is known that when the solution is required to induce a connected subgraph (such a set is called a connected feedback vertex set), a polynomial kernelization is unlikely to exist and the problem is NP-hard to approximate below a factor of 2 (assuming the Unique Games Conjecture). In this paper, we show that if one is interested in only preserving approximate solutions (even of quality arbitrarily close to the optimum), then there is a drastic improvement in our ability to preprocess this problem. Specifically, we prove that for every fixed 0<epsilon<1, graph G, and k in N, the following holds: There is a polynomial time computable graph G\u27 of size k^O(1) such that for every c >= 1, any c-approximate connected feedback vertex set of G\u27 of size at most k is a c * (1+epsilon)-approximate connected feedback vertex set of G. Our result adds to the set of approximate kernelization algorithms introduced by Lokshtanov et al. [STOC 2017]. As a consequence of our main result, we show that Connected Feedback Vertex Set can be approximated within a factor min{OPT^O(1),n^(1-delta)} in polynomial time for some delta>0

    Optimal Dynamic Distributed MIS

    Finding a maximal independent set (MIS) in a graph is a cornerstone task in distributed computing. The local nature of an MIS allows for fast solutions in a static distributed setting, which are logarithmic in the number of nodes or in their degrees. The result trivially applies for the dynamic distributed model, in which edges or nodes may be inserted or deleted. In this paper, we take a different approach which exploits locality to the extreme, and show how to update an MIS in a dynamic distributed setting, either \emph{synchronous} or \emph{asynchronous}, with only \emph{a single adjustment} and in a single round, in expectation. These strong guarantees hold for the \emph{complete fully dynamic} setting: Insertions and deletions, of edges as well as nodes, gracefully and abruptly. This strongly separates the static and dynamic distributed models, as super-constant lower bounds exist for computing an MIS in the former. Our results are obtained by a novel analysis of the surprisingly simple solution of carefully simulating the greedy \emph{sequential} MIS algorithm with a random ordering of the nodes. As such, our algorithm has a direct application as a 33-approximation algorithm for correlation clustering. This adds to the important toolbox of distributed graph decompositions, which are widely used as crucial building blocks in distributed computing. Finally, our algorithm enjoys a useful \emph{history-independence} property, meaning the output is independent of the history of topology changes that constructed that graph. This means the output cannot be chosen, or even biased, by the adversary in case its goal is to prevent us from optimizing some objective function.Comment: 19 pages including appendix and reference

    Stochastic Control via Entropy Compression

    We consider an agent trying to bring a system to an acceptable state by repeated probabilistic action. Several recent works on algorithmizations of the Lovasz Local Lemma (LLL) can be seen as establishing sufficient conditions for the agent to succeed. Here we study whether such stochastic control is also possible in a noisy environment, where both the process of state-observation and the process of state-evolution are subject to adversarial perturbation (noise). The introduction of noise causes the tools developed for LLL algorithmization to break down since the key LLL ingredient, the sparsity of the causality (dependence) relationship, no longer holds. To overcome this challenge we develop a new analysis where entropy plays a central role, both to measure the rate at which progress towards an acceptable state is made and the rate at which noise undoes this progress. The end result is a sufficient condition that allows a smooth tradeoff between the intensity of the noise and the amenability of the system, recovering an asymmetric LLL condition in the noiseless case.Comment: 18 page

    Repetition Detection in a Dynamic String

    A string UU for a non-empty string U is called a square. Squares have been well-studied both from a combinatorial and an algorithmic perspective. In this paper, we are the first to consider the problem of maintaining a representation of the squares in a dynamic string S of length at most n. We present an algorithm that updates this representation in n^o(1) time. This representation allows us to report a longest square-substring of S in O(1) time and all square-substrings of S in O(output) time. We achieve this by introducing a novel tool - maintaining prefix-suffix matches of two dynamic strings. We extend the above result to address the problem of maintaining a representation of all runs (maximal repetitions) of the string. Runs are known to capture the periodic structure of a string, and, as an application, we show that our representation of runs allows us to efficiently answer periodicity queries for substrings of a dynamic string. These queries have proven useful in static pattern matching problems and our techniques have the potential of offering solutions to these problems in a dynamic text setting
