    Numerics and Fractals

Local iterated function systems are an important generalisation of the standard (global) iterated function systems (IFSs). For a particular class of mappings, their fixed points are the graphs of local fractal functions and these functions themselves are known to be the fixed points of an associated Read-Bajactarevi\'c operator. This paper establishes existence and properties of local fractal functions and discusses how they are computed. In particular, it is shown that piecewise polynomials are a special case of local fractal functions. Finally, we develop a method to compute the components of a local IFS from data or (partial differential) equations.Comment: version 2: minor updates and section 6.1 rewritten, arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1309.0243. text overlap with arXiv:1309.024

Singularity and similarity detection for signals using the wavelet transform

    Get PDF
The wavelet transform and related techniques are used to analyze singular and fractal signals. The normalized wavelet scalogram is introduced to detect singularities including jumps, cusps and other sharply changing points. The wavelet auto-covariance is applied to estimate the self-similarity exponent for statistical self-affine signals

    Star-shaped Set Inversion Fractals

In the paper, we generalized the idea of circle inversion to star-shaped sets and used the generalized inversion to replace the circle inversion transformation in the algorithm for the generation of the circle inversion fractals. In this way, we obtained the star-shaped set inversion fractals. The examples that we have presented show that we were able to obtain very diverse fractal patterns by using the proposed extension and that these patterns are different from those obtained with the circle inversion method. Moreover, because circles are star-shaped sets, the proposed generalization allows us to deform the circle inversion fractals in a very easy and intuitive way

Entropy computing via integration over fractal measures

We discuss the properties of invariant measures corresponding to iterated function systems (IFSs) with place-dependent probabilities and compute their Renyi entropies, generalized dimensions, and multifractal spectra. It is shown that with certain dynamical systems one can associate the corresponding IFSs in such a way that their generalized entropies are equal. This provides a new method of computing entropy for some classical and quantum dynamical systems. Numerical techniques are based on integration over the fractal measures.Comment: 14 pages in Latex, Revtex + 4 figures in .ps attached (revised version, new title, several changes, to appear in CHAOS

    Intuitive modeling of vapourish objects

International audienceAttempts to model gases in computer graphics started in the late 1970s. Since that time, there have been many approaches developed. In this paper we present a non-physical method allowing to create vapourish objects like clouds or smoky characters. The idea is to create few sketches describing the rough shape of the final vapourish object. These sketches will be used as condensation sets of Iterated Function Systems, providing intuitive control over the object. The advantages of the new method are: simplicity, good control of resulting shapes and ease of eventual object animation
