    Natural Language is a Programming Language: Applying Natural Language Processing to Software Development

    A powerful, but limited, way to view software is as source code alone. Treating a program as a sequence of instructions enables it to be formalized and makes it amenable to mathematical techniques such as abstract interpretation and model checking. A program consists of much more than a sequence of instructions. Developers make use of test cases, documentation, variable names, program structure, the version control repository, and more. I argue that it is time to take the blinders off of software analysis tools: tools should use all these artifacts to deduce more powerful and useful information about the program. Researchers are beginning to make progress towards this vision. This paper gives, as examples, four results that find bugs and generate code by applying natural language processing techniques to software artifacts. The four techniques use as input error messages, variable names, procedure documentation, and user questions. They use four different NLP techniques: document similarity, word semantics, parse trees, and neural networks. The initial results suggest that this is a promising avenue for future work

    ReCrash: Making Crashes Reproducible

    It is difficult to fix a problem without being able to reproduce it.However, reproducing a problem is often difficult and time-consuming.This paper proposes a novel algorithm, ReCrash, that generatesmultiple unit tests that reproduce a given program crash.ReCrash dynamically tracks method calls during every execution of the target program. If the program crashes, ReCrash saves information about the relevant method calls and uses the saved information to create unit tests reproducing the crash.We present reCrashJ an implementation of ReCrash for Java. reCrashJ reproducedreal crashes from javac, SVNKit, Eclipse JDT, and BST. reCrashJ is efficient, incurring 13%-64% performance overhead. If this overhead is unacceptable, then reCrashJ has another mode that has negligible overhead until a crash occurs and 0%-1.7% overhead until a second crash, at which point the test cases are generated

    HydroShare โ€“ A Case Study of the Application of Modern Software Engineering to a Large Distributed Federally-Funded Scientific Software Development Project

    HydroShare is an online collaborative system under development to support the open sharing of hydrologic data, analytical tools, and computer models. With HydroShare, scientists can easily discover, access, and analyze hydrologic data and thereby enhance the production and reproducibility of hydrologic scientific results. HydroShare also takes advantage of emerging social media functionality to enable users to enhance information about and collaboration around hydrologic data and models. HydroShare is being developed by an interdisciplinary collaborative team of domain scientists, university software developers, and professional software engineers from ten institutions located across the United States. While the combination of nonโ€“co-located, diverse stakeholders presents communication and management challenges, the interdisciplinary nature of the team is integral to the projectโ€™s goal of improving scientific software development and capabilities in academia. This chapter describes the challenges faced and lessons learned with the development of HydroShare, as well as the approach to software development that the HydroShare team adopted on the basis of the lessons learned. The chapter closes with recommendations for the application of modern software engineering techniques to large, collaborative, scientific software development projects, similar to the National Science Foundation (NSF)โ€“funded HydroShare, in order to promote the successful application of the approach described herein by other teams for other projects

    Achieving Cost-Effective Software Reliability Through Self-Healing

    Heterogeneity, mobility, complexity and new application domains raise new software reliability issues that cannot be met cost-effectively only with classic software engineering approaches. Self-healing systems can successfully address these problems, thus increasing software reliability while reducing maintenance costs. Self-healing systems must be able to automatically identify runtime failures, locate faults, and find a way to bring the system back to an acceptable behavior. This paper discusses the challenges underlying the construction of self-healing systems with particular focus on functional failures, and presents a set of techniques to build software systems that can automatically heal such failures. It introduces techniques to automatically derive assertions to effectively detect functional failures, locate the faults underlying the failures, and identify sequences of actions alternative to the failing sequence to bring the system back to an acceptable behavior
