A semantic content analysis model for sports video based on perception concepts and finite state machines

    Get PDF
In automatic video content analysis domain, the key challenges are how to recognize important objects and how to model the spatiotemporal relationships between them. In this paper we propose a semantic content analysis model based on Perception Concepts (PCs) and Finite State Machines (FSMs) to automatically describe and detect significant semantic content within sports video. PCs are defined to represent important semantic patterns for sports videos based on identifiable feature elements. PC-FSM models are designed to describe spatiotemporal relationships between PCs. And graph matching method is used to detect high-level semantic automatically. A particular strength of this approach is that users are able to design their own highlights and transfer the detection problem into a graph matching problem. Experimental results are used to illustrate the potential of this approac

    Cavitation Inception in Spool Valves

    Get PDF
Cavitation has been investigated in directional control valves in order to identify damage mechanisms characteristic of components of aircraft hydraulic systems. Tests have been conducted in a representative metal spool valve and in a model three times larger. Data taken under non-cavitating conditions with both valves showed that the position of the high-velocity annular jet shifts orientation depending upon valve opening and Reynolds number. By means of high-frequency response pressure transducers strategically placed in the valve chamber cavitation could be sensed by the correlation of noise with a cavitation index. The onset of cavitation can be detected by comparing energy spectra for a fixed valve opening and a constant discharge. Another sensitive indicator of cavitation inception is the ratio of cavitating to non-cavitating spectral densities. The incipient cavitation number as defined in this investigation is correlated with the Reynolds number for both valves

2010 Annual Evidence Update on Critical Illness Rehabilitation

    Get PDF
For this annual evidence update a detailed literature review was undertaken to retrieve any evidence published subsequent to the literature search which formed the basis for the NICE guideline. A total of 29 articles were selected for review and appraisal by a team of critical care practitioners. In this context it has to be noted that the evidence base on the subject is still relatively small. For the original guideline only 12 articles were selected as evidence which addressed the review questions. This evidence update intends to give an indication of encouraging trends within critical illness rehabilitation

Necessary but not sufficient: the role of the EU in resolving Turkey's Kurdish question and the Greek--Turkish conflicts.

    Get PDF
The article presents a comparative analysis of the role of the European Union (EU) in resolving Turkey's Kurdish question and the Greek-Turkish conflicts. The results yield important insights, both in terms of evaluating the role of the EU in conflict resolution and of assessing the relative strengths and weaknesses of the Conflict Resolution and European Studies literatures

The formation of objects in the group matrix: Reflections on creative therapy with clay

    Get PDF
In this article describes an experimental group experience where five people worked in silence for 20 minutes around a 2 ft square slate using clay as a medium for communication as part of a creative therapy session on an inpatient psychiatric ward. The interaction culminated in a group sculpt. It is suggested that the process of the sculpting may throw some light on the formation of objects in the unconscious group matrix. The article is intended as a contribution towards the debate about the potential symbiosis between group analysis and the creative therapies (Waller) as well as the basis for further investigation into Rey's question about the formation of group matrix

Communications for Next Generation single chip computers

    Get PDF
It is the thesis of this report that much of what is presently thought to require specialized VLSI functions might instead be achieved by combinations of fast general purpose single chip computers with upgraded communication facilities. To this end, the characteristics of applications of this nature are first surveyed briefly and some working principles established. In the light of these, three different chip philosophies are explored in some detail. This study shows that some upgrading of typical single chip I/O will definitely be necessary, but that this upgrading does not have to be complex and that true multiprocessor-multibus operation could be achieved without excessive cost
