    Performance Evaluation of end-to-end security protocols in an Internet of Things

    Wireless Sensor Networks are destined to play a fundamental role in the next-generation Internet, which will be characterized by the Machine-to-Machine paradigm, according to which, embedded devices will actively exchange information, thus enabling the development of innovative applications. It will contribute to assert the concept of Internet of Things, where end-to-end security represents a key issue. In such context, it is very important to understand which protocols are able to provide the right level of security without burdening the limited resources of constrained networks. This paper presents a performance comparison between two of the most widely used security protocols: IPSec and DTLS. We provide the analysis of their impact on the resources of embedded devices. For this purpose, we have modified existing implementations of both protocols to make them properly run on our hardware platforms, and we have performed an extensive experimental evaluation study. The achieved results are not a consequence of a classical simulation campaign, but they have been obtained in a real scenario that uses software and hardware typical of the current technological developments. Therefore, they can help network designers to identify the most appropriate secure mechanism for end-to-end IP communications involving constrained devices

    Performance Evaluation of a Novel Animals Tracking System based on UHF RFID Technology

    The adoption of solutions based on Radio Frequency IDentification technology in a wide range of contexts is a matter of fact. In many situations, such as the tracking of small-size living animals, the straightforward use of commercial systems does not ensure adequate performance. Consequently, both the RFID hardware and the software control platform should be tailored for the particular application. In this work, the specific requirements of Near Field Ultra High Frequency RFID reader antennas suitable for small-size animal localization and tracking are identified and a control system in a LabVIEW environment is designed. Afterwards, both hardware and software solutions have been implemented and validated. In particular, an algorithm based on the measured Received Signal Strength Indication, in order to obtain precise localization data, was developed and validated. Finally, the set-up of a first working prototype involving built-in-lab reader antennas has been completed and tested. The achieved results prove the effectiveness of the proposed tracking system

    A Combined Batteryless Radio and WiFi Indoor Positioning for Hospital Nursing

    This paper proposes a design of an efficient hospital nurse calling system which combines two types of indoor localization systems. The purpose of the first system is to locate patients while the second is to locate nurses equipped with their smart phones. The main goal of developing such system is to decrease the time taking for nurses to provide healthcare for patients. Patients' positioning system is RF based. Indeed, each patient is equipped with a wireless and battery-free call button. When the switch is pressed, a wireless telegram is sent to reference nodes that act like Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). The positioning of patient is performed using trilateration method with the help of Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) values. Hence, beacons will forward the received signal from patient’s call button to a central receiver module connected to a computer. A dedicated program has been developed to calculate the position of the call button and post it on an online database. On the other hand, the nurses’ localization system is WiFi-based. Nurses' positioning is done by determining the Time of Arrival (ToA) and the Angle of Arrival (AoA) between the mobile phone and the WiFi router. The mobile phone locations are posted to the online database as well. Our program performs a comparison between the nurses' and the patient's coordinates. The nearest nurse gets an alarm. As consequence, a patient gets care from the nearest available nurse in an efficient way and with less time. The proposed system is user-friendly and Internet of Things (IoT) based architecture integrating two heterogeneous localization systems seamlessly

    3D indoor positioning of UAVs with spread spectrum ultrasound and time-of-flight cameras

    Este trabajo propone el uso de un sistema híbrido de posicionamiento acústico y óptico en interiores para el posicionamiento 3D preciso de los vehículos aéreos no tripulados (UAV). El módulo acústico de este sistema se basa en un esquema de Acceso Múltiple por División de Código de Tiempo (T-CDMA), en el que la emisión secuencial de cinco códigos ultrasónicos de espectro amplio se realiza para calcular la posición horizontal del vehículo siguiendo un procedimiento de multilateración 2D. El módulo óptico se basa en una cámara de Tiempo de Vuelo (TOF) que proporciona una estimación inicial de la altura del vehículo. A continuación se propone un algoritmo recursivo programado en un ordenador externo para refinar la posición estimada. Los resultados experimentales muestran que el sistema propuesto puede aumentar la precisión de un sistema exclusivamente acústico en un 70-80% en términos de error cuadrático medio de posicionamiento.This work proposes the use of a hybrid acoustic and optical indoor positioning system for the accurate 3D positioning of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The acoustic module of this system is based on a Time-Code Division Multiple Access (T-CDMA) scheme, where the sequential emission of five spread spectrum ultrasonic codes is performed to compute the horizontal vehicle position following a 2D multilateration procedure. The optical module is based on a Time-Of-Flight (TOF) camera that provides an initial estimation for the vehicle height. A recursive algorithm programmed on an external computer is then proposed to refine the estimated position. Experimental results show that the proposed system can increase the accuracy of a solely acoustic system by 70–80% in terms of positioning mean square error.• Gobierno de España y Fondos para el Desarrollo Regional Europeo.     Frequency and Time Domain Analysis of Influence of the Grounding Electrode Conductivity on Induced Current Distribution

    The paper deals with an assessment of the influence of finite conductivity to the current induced along the horizontal grounding electrode. Analysis is performed in frequency and time domain, respectively. Current distribution along the grounding electrode buried in a lossy half-space is determined via analytical solution of the corresponding Pocklington equation in the frequency domain. The corresponding time domain response is obtained by means of Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT). The electrode is excited via an equivalent current source. Presence of the earth-air interface is taken into account via the simplified reflection coefficient arising from the Modified Image Theory (MIT). The electrode current is calculated for the case of perfectly conducting (PEC) electrode and for the electrodes made of copper and aluminum. Comparison of results shows no significant discrepancy between these electrodes, justifying the use of a PEC electrode approximation

    MOSTO: A toolkit to facilitate security auditing of ICS devices using Modbus/TCP

    The integration of the Internet into industrial plants has connected Industrial Control Systems (ICS) worldwide, resulting in an increase in the number of attack surfaces and the exposure of software and devices not originally intended for networking. In addition, the heterogeneity and technical obsolescence of ICS architectures, legacy hardware, and outdated software pose significant challenges. Since these systems control essential infrastructure such as power grids, water treatment plants, and transportation networks, security is of the utmost importance. Unfortunately, current methods for evaluating the security of ICS are often ad-hoc and difficult to formalize into a systematic evaluation methodology with predictable results. In this paper, we propose a practical method supported by a concrete toolkit for performing penetration testing in an industrial setting. The primary focus is on the Modbus/TCP protocol as the field control protocol. Our approach relies on a toolkit, named MOSTO, which is licensed under GNU GPL and enables auditors to assess the security of existing industrial control settings without interfering with ICS workflows. Furthermore, we present a model-driven framework that combines formal methods, testing techniques, and simulation to (formally) test security properties in ICS networks

    Evaluation and Comparison of Ultrasonic and UWB Technology for Indoor Localization in an Industrial Environment

    Evaluations of different technologies and solutions for indoor localization exist but only a few are aimed at the industrial context. In this paper, we compare and analyze two prominent solutions based on Ultra Wide Band Radio (Pozyx) and Ultrasound (GoT), both installed in an industrial manufacturing laboratory. The comparison comprises a static and a dynamic case. The static case evaluates average localization errors over 90 s intervals for 100 ground-truth points at three different heights, corresponding to different relevant objects in an industrial environment: mobile robots, pallets, forklifts and worker helmets. The average error obtained across the laboratory is similar for both systems and is between 0.3 m and 0.6 m, with higher errors for low altitudes. The dynamic case is performed with a mobile robot travelling with an average speed of 0.5 m/s at a height of 0.3 m. In this case, low frequency error components are filtered out to focus the comparison on dynamic errors. Average dynamic errors are within 0.3–0.4 m for Pozyx and within 0.1–0.2 m for GoT. Results show an acceptable accuracy required for tracking people or objects and could serve as a guideline for the least achievable accuracy when applied for mobile robotics in conjunction with other elements of a robotic navigation stack

    Efficient spectrum occupancy prediction exploiting multidimensional correlations through composite 2D-LSTM models

    In cognitive radio systems, identifying spectrum opportunities is fundamental to efficiently use the spectrum. Spectrum occupancy prediction is a convenient way of revealing opportunities based on previous occupancies. Studies have demonstrated that usage of the spectrum has a high correlation over multidimensions, which includes time, frequency, and space. Accordingly, recent literature uses tensor-based methods to exploit the multidimensional spectrum correlation. However, these methods share two main drawbacks. First, they are computationally complex. Second, they need to re-train the overall model when no information is received from any base station for any reason. Different than the existing works, this paper proposes a method for dividing the multidimensional correlation exploitation problem into a set of smaller sub-problems. This division is achieved through composite two-dimensional (2D)-long short-term memory (LSTM) models. Extensive experimental results reveal a high detection performance with more robustness and less complexity attained by the proposed method. The real-world measurements provided by one of the leading mobile network operators in Turkey validate these results

    Alogorithms for fast implementation of high efficiency video coding

    Recently, there is higher demand for video content in multimedia communication, which leads to increased requirements for storage and bandwidth posed to internet service providers. Due to this, it became necessary for the telecommunication standardization sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) to launch a new video compression standard that would address the twin challenges of lowering both digital file sizes in storage media and transmission bandwidths in networks. The High Efficiency Video Compression (HEVC) also known as H.265 standard was launched in November 2013 to address these challenges. This new standard was able to cut down, by 50%, on existing media file sizes and bandwidths but its computational complexity leads to about 400% delay in HEVC video encoding. This study proposes a solution to the above problem based on three key areas of the HEVC. Firstly, two fast motion estimation algorithms are proposed based on triangle and pentagon structures to implement motion estimation and compensation in a shorter time. Secondly, an enhanced and optimized inter-prediction mode selection is proposed. Thirdly, an enhanced intra-prediction mode scheme with reduced latency is suggested. Based on the test model of the HEVC reference software, each individual algorithm manages to reduce the encoding time across all video classes by an average of 20-30%, with a best reduction of 70%, at a negligible loss in coding efficiency and video quality degradation. In practice, these algorithms would be able to enhance the performance of the HEVC compression standard, and enable higher resolution and higher frame rate video encoding as compared to the stateof- the-art technique
