    High Performance Switched Reluctance Drives

    PhD ThesisThe fully-pitched winding arrangement is one of the most radical changes in the design of doubly-salient reluctance motors in recent times. By replacing conventional shortpitched windings with fully-pitched windings, the resulting machine has a strong and position dependant mutual coupling between phases. The major torque producing mechanism is due to changes in mutual inductance with rotor position. This enables the windings to be better utilised, and with correct selection of excitation all phases can contribute useful torque all of the time. The increased winding utilisation requires a lower MMF per phase in comparison with a short-pitch wound machine with a single phase excited. Given a suitable winding configuration and machine dimensions, the copper losses for a given torque can be significantly lower than an equivalent conventional switched reluctance machine. Operation of a three phase fully-pitched winding switched reluctance machine has been studied theoretically, in simulation and experimentally. The experimental drive comprises of a D132 frame 12:8 machine, IGBT power converter and DSP controller. Operation with unipolar phase currents has been investigated over a wide speed range and performance compared with a conventional switched reluctance machine. Bipolar operation with several different excitation patterns has been investigated. Unipolar operation gives the largest torque/speed envelope with a simple controller, although bipolar modes can equal this with a more complex controller. Results show that for equal RMS phase current the average torque produced by four different modes of excitation are approximately equal. However, there is a large difference in the torque ripple and acoustic noise performance of each mode. Current control in switched reluctance machines is complicated by the non-linear nature of the load. By controlling flux-linkage rather than current a linear load model can be used. A discrete time 'dead-beat' flux-linkage controller has been implemented which gives superior phase current control performance to other types of controller with the same sample interval. A new method of constant torque operation based on 'flux ramps' has been proposed. This method gives predictable performance and enables constant torque operation over a wide speed range. A Genetic Algorithm has been shown to be very effective when applied to the problem of optimising the 'flux ramps' for minimum torque ripple. A speed controller has been implemented which makes use of the Genetic Algorithm optimised flux ramps to give smooth torque over a wide speed range.Royal Societ

    Control of switched reluctance machines

    This thesis is concerned with the control of switched reluctance machines for both motoring and generating applications. There are different control objectives in each case. For motoring operation, there are two possible control objectives. If the SRM is being employed in a servo-type application, the desire is for a constant output torque. However, for low performance applications where some amount of torque ripple is acceptable, the aim is to achieve efficient and accurate speed regulation. When the SRM is employed for generating purposes, the goal is to maintain the dc bus voltage at the required value while achieving maximum efficiency. Preliminary investigative work on switched reluctance machine control in both motoring and generating modes is performed. This includes the implementation and testing through simulation of two control strategies described in the literature. In addition, an experimental system is built for the development and testing of new control strategies. The inherent nonlinearity of the switched reluctance machine results in ripple in the torque profile. This adversely affects motoring performance for servo-type applications. Hence, three neuro-fuzzy control strategies for torque ripple minimisation in switched reluctance motors are developed. For all three control strategies, the training of a neurofuzzy compensator and the incorporation of the trained compensator into the overall switched reluctance drive are described. The performance of the control strategies in reducing the torque ripple is examined with simulations and through experimental testing. While the torque ripple is troublesome for servo-type applications, there are some applications where a certain amount of torque ripple is acceptable. Therefore, four simple motor control strategies for torque ripple-tolerant applications are described and tested experimentally. Three of the control strategies are for low speed motoring operation while the fourth is aimed at high speed motoring operation. Finally, three closed-loop generator control strategies aimed at high speed operation in single pulse mode are developed. The three control strategies are examined by testing on the experimental system.     The modern smart grid would involve deep integration between measurement nodes, communication systems, artificial intelligence, power electronics and distributed resources. On one hand, this type of integration can dramatically improve the grid performance and efficiency, but on the other, it can also introduce new types of vulnerabilities to the grid. To obtain the best performance, while minimizing the risk of vulnerabilities, the physical power system must be designed as a security aware system. In this dissertation, an interoperability and communication framework for microgrid control and Cyber Physical system enhancements is designed and implemented taking into account cyber and physical security aspects. The proposed data-centric interoperability layer provides a common data bus and a resilient control network for seamless integration of distributed energy resources. In addition, a synchronized measurement network and advanced metering infrastructure were developed to provide real-time monitoring for active distribution networks. A hybrid hardware/software testbed environment was developed to represent the smart grid as a cyber-physical system through hardware and software in the loop simulation methods. In addition it provides a flexible interface for remote integration and experimentation of attack scenarios. The work in this dissertation utilizes communication technologies to enhance the performance of the DC microgrids and distribution networks by extending the application of the GPS synchronization to the DC Networks. GPS synchronization allows the operation of distributed DC-DC converters as an interleaved converters system. Along with the GPS synchronization, carrier extraction synchronization technique was developed to improve the system’s security and reliability in the case of GPS signal spoofing or jamming. To improve the integration of the microgrid with the utility system, new synchronization and islanding detection algorithms were developed. The developed algorithms overcome the problem of SCADA and PMU based islanding detection methods such as communication failure and frequency stability. In addition, a real-time energy management system with online optimization was developed to manage the energy resources within the microgrid. The security and privacy were also addressed in both the cyber and physical levels. For the physical design, two techniques were developed to address the physical privacy issues by changing the current and electromagnetic signature. For the cyber level, a security mechanism for IEC 61850 GOOSE messages was developed to address the security shortcomings in the standard

    Voltage equalisation techniques for high capacitance device modules

    Phd ThesisTraditionally, the electrochemical battery has been the prime medium by which electrical energy is stored for future use. Increasingly, the demands of modern systems such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, distributed generation, smart grid and others has stretched the development of new chemistries, materials and assembly techniques for electrochemical batteries. Additionally, some load profiles in these applications demand extremely high dynamic behaviour which is either undeliverable by conventional electrochemical batteries or is undesirably damaging to these technologies. As such, a family of electrochemical storage, known generally as supercapacitors or ultracapacitors, have been developed and implemented for such applications. In recent years advancements in electrochemical technology has led to hybridisation of high capacitance devices. Lithium-ion capacitors that are used in this work are, with their higher cell voltage and modern packaging, expected to be among the next emerging families of state-of-the-art electrical energy storage devices. The relatively low cell voltage of high capacitance cells requires them to be connected in series to attain a system level voltage. During charging and discharging, manufacturing tolerances between the cells results in voltage mismatch across the stack. Mismatched voltages are an inefficient use of the energy storage medium and can lead to dangerous failures in the cells. Several techniques exist to limit the variance in cell voltages of supercapacitors across a series connected stack. These range from simple systems which discharge the cells at higher voltages through resistors to more complex active converter systems which equalise the cell voltages through charge redistribution via a power electronic converter. Whilst the simpler schemes are effective they are very inefficient and as such are not suitable for use in many applications. A number of active converter voltage equalisation schemes have been proposed in literature, however, each of these equalisation schemes exhibit flaws which either makes them less desirable or less effective for a broad range of applications. Therefore, a new equalisation converter topology is proposed which is designed for greater equalisation effectiveness, modularity and size. The proposed equalisation converter differs from previously published equalisation schemes by allowing energy transfer between any pair of cells without the cumbersome multi-winding transformers employed in existing equalisation converters. The new equalisation scheme uses a bi-directional arrangement of MOSFET switches for galvanostatic isolation allowing the converter to be multiplexed to the stack. This arrangement allows the total size of the equalisation scheme to be reduced whilst maintaining performance.EPSRC

    Cal Poly Supermileage Dynamometer

    Our senior project involves designing a chassis dynamometer capable of simulating variable loads for the Cal Poly Supermileage Vehicle (SMV) team. The chassis dynamometer we are developing uses an alternator to develop additional resistance that the vehicle will have to overcome while testing. To implement a control system for the variable load, we use an Arduino Nano paired with multiple sensors and drivers. This control system allows the user to select different levels of resistance that correlate with different road grades. We designed a custom Printed Circuit Board (PCB) that will contain all the electrical components needed for the control system. We designed a mechanical system that makes use of belt drive pulleys to link the resistance provided by the alternator to the rotating drum and shaft assembly. Our final design also includes a software system with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) that allows for users of the SMV team to easily select various road grades and see the results of their dynamometer testing. Our design will allow the SMV team to make more efficient upgrades to the powertrain of both their gas and electric vehicles
