    Library Facility Layout Design for Digital Native Generation

    Digital native generation grows up with information technology attached to their daily life. This advantage changes their way to find information, only with one click they have all the answers in their gadget. This situation effect library that used to be the source of information, numbers of library visit has been reduced significantly in the last century. Therefore library needs basic changes to accommodate digital native generation. Library needs to facilitate their need by repositioning itself as a community hub, a place to meet, interact, learn and collaborate. Anish I and Arish Ibrahim (2014), propose to use Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) to design library facility layout. The purpose is to maximize the satisfaction of employee, management, and library users. This paper gives the framework for systematic layout planning but has not applied it using computer simulation tool such as CRAFT. Research is conducted to four universities owned libraries in Surabaya, Indonesia. Two from state universities and another two from private universities. A heuristic improvement algorithm CRAFT (Computerised Relative Allocation of Facilities Technique) will be applied to relayout library facilities. Adjustment to each facility will also be done and as the result, new library facility layout will be more suitable to meet digital native generation needs. The implication of this adjustment is additional investment in new facilities and repositioning current layout

Many efforts have been made to observe and sense the Earth, both from space (remote sensing) and by using in situ sensors. The current era of connectivity envisions that everything is connected to everything. The concept of the Internet of Things(IoT)emergedasaholisticproposaltoenableanecosystemofvaried,heterogeneous networked objects and devices to speak to and interact with each other. To make the IoT ecosystem a reality, it is necessary to understand the electronic components, communication protocols, real-time analysis techniques, and the location of the objects and devices. The IoT ecosystem and the Digital Earth (DE) jointly form interrelated infrastructures for addressing today’s pressing issues and complex challenges. In this chapter, we explore the synergies and frictions in establishing an efficient and permanent collaboration between the two infrastructures, in order to adequately address multidisciplinary and increasingly complex real-world problems. Although there are still some pending issues, the identified synergies generate optimism for a true collaboration between the Internet of Things and the Digital Earth

    Lean and green – a systematic review of the state of the art literature

    The move towards greener operations and products has forced companies to seek alternatives to balance efficiency gains and environmental friendliness in their operations and products. The exploration of the sequential or simultaneous deployment of lean and green initiatives is the results of this balancing action. However, the lean-green topic is relatively new, and it lacks of a clear and structured research definition. Thus, this paper’s main contribution is the offering of a systematic review of the existing literature on lean and green, aimed at providing guidance on the topic, uncovering gaps and inconsistencies in the literature, and finding new paths for research. The paper identifies and structures, through a concept map, six main research streams that comprise both conceptual and empirical research conducted within the context of various organisational functions and industrial sectors. Important issues for future research are then suggested in the form of research questions. The paper’s aim is to also contribute by stimulating scholars to further study this area in depth, which will lead to a better understanding of the compatibility and impact on organisational performance of lean and green initiatives. It also holds important implications for industrialists, who can develop a deeper and richer knowledge on lean and green to help them formulate more effective strategies for their deployment

    The megatrend digitalization turns mechatronic products into continuous collectors and generators of use phase data. By analyzing this data, manufacturers can uncover valuable insights about the products and the users. Especially in product planning, these insights could be used to plan promising future product generations. The systematic exploitation of data analytics results, however, represents a serious challenge, as research on the topic is still scarce. In this paper, we present 13 design principles for exploiting data analytics results in product planning. The results are based on a systematic literature review and a workshop with a research consortium. The evaluation of the design principles is demonstrated with a real case of a manufacturing company. The identified design principles represent a first contribution to a still scarcely explored research field

    Interpretive Structural Model of Key Performance Indicators for Sustainable Manufacturing Evaluation in Cement Industry

    This paper aims to analyze the relationships among the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for sustainable manufacturing evaluation in the cement industry. The initial KPIs have been identified and derived from literature, and then validated by industry survey. As a result, three factors dividing into a total of thirteen indicators have been proposed as the KPIs for sustainable manufacturing evaluation in cement industry. Interpretive structural modeling (ISM) methodology is applied to develop a network structure model of the KPIs. The results show the indicators of economic factor are regarded as the basic indicator, while the indicators of environmental factor are indicated to be the leading indicator. Of those indicators, raw material substitution is regarded as the most influencing indicator. The ISM model can aid the cement companies by providing a better insight in evaluating sustainable manufacturing performance

    This paper aims to analyze the interrelationships among the key performance indicators of sustainable manufacturing evaluation in automotive companies. The initial key performance indicators have been identified and derived from literature and were then validated by industry survey. Interpretive structural modeling (ISM) methodology is applied to develop a hierarchical structure of the key performance indicators in three levels. Of nine indicators, there are five unstable indicators which have both high driver and dependence power, thus requiring further attention. It is believed that the model can provide a better insight for automotive managers in assessing their sustainable manufacturing performance
