    This book collects more than 20 papers, written by renowned experts and scientists from across the globe, that showcase the state-of-the-art and forefront research in archaeological remote sensing and the use of geoscientific techniques to investigate archaeological records and cultural heritage. Very high resolution satellite images from optical and radar space-borne sensors, airborne multi-spectral images, ground penetrating radar, terrestrial laser scanning, 3D modelling, Geographyc Information Systems (GIS) are among the techniques used in the archaeological studies published in this book. The reader can learn how to use these instruments and sensors, also in combination, to investigate cultural landscapes, discover new sites, reconstruct paleo-landscapes, augment the knowledge of monuments, and assess the condition of heritage at risk. Case studies scattered across Europe, Asia and America are presented: from the World UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lines and Geoglyphs of Nasca and Palpa to heritage under threat in the Middle East and North Africa, from coastal heritage in the intertidal flats of the German North Sea to Early and Neolithic settlements in Thessaly.     Bounded variability of metric temporal logic

    Deciding validity of Metric Temporal Logic (MTL) formulas is generally very complex and even undecidable over dense time domains; bounded variability is one of the several restrictions that have been proposed to bring decidability back. A temporal model has bounded variability if no more than v events occur over any time interval of length V, for constant parameters v and V. Previous work has shown that MTL validity over models with bounded variability is less complex—and often decidable—than MTL validity over unconstrained models. This paper studies the related problem of deciding whether an MTL formula has intrinsic bounded variability, that is whether it is satisfied only by models with bounded variability. The results of the paper are mainly negative: over dense time domains, the problem is mostly undecidable (even if with an undecidability degree that is typically lower than deciding validity); over discrete time domains, it is decidable with the same complexity as deciding validity. As a partial complement to these negative results, the paper also identifies MTL fragments where deciding bounded variability is simpler than validity, which may provide for a reduction in complexity in some practical cases

    The mission of the Centre for Environmental Archival (CEDA) is to deliver long term curation of scientifically important environmental data at the same time as facilitating the use of data by the environmental science community. CEDA was established by the amalgamation of the activities of two of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) designated data centres: the British Atmospheric Data Centre, and the NERC Earth Observation Data Centre. We are pleased to present here our fourth annual report, covering activities for the 2013 year (April 2012 to March 2013). The report consists of two sections and appendices, the first section broadly providing a summary of activities and some statistics with some short descriptions of some significant activities, and a second section introducing some exemplar projects and activities. The report concludes with additional details of activities such as publications, software maintained etc

    Foreigners, aliens, and strangers:foreign-born migration and settlement in England and Wales, 1851-1911

    Migration into Britain is not a contemporary phenomenon; yet, nineteenth-century British migration history is disproportionately weighted towards those who left. In the nineteenth-century, hundreds of thousands of migrants arrived and settled in England and Wales. Yet, important gaps remain in the literature with respect to how migrants settled, integrated, and interacted with the host society. This thesis utilises a datadriven approach to investigate the composition and behaviours of foreign-born persons in England and Wales during the period 1851-1911 and establish who they were, where they came from, and what they did after arrival. Specifically, this thesis asks ‘to what extent did the foreign-born population integrate or segregate from the nativeborn population?’ Using the recently released Integrated Census Microdata (I-CeM), this thesis is the first to analyse the entire foreign-born population of England and Wales at an individual-level. Key themes considered in this thesis includes the demography and structure of foreign-born households, socio-economic composition, and spatial distribution of migrants. Two case studies, one from Newcastle upon Tyne, and another from East London, are used to contrast the residentially segregating behaviours of the migrant populations. A series of key findings are presented in this work. For example, less than twenty per cent of the migrant population lived exclusively with other migrants, indicating a tendency to interact with the host society. Taken holistically, therefore, this thesis establishes the national landscape of migrant composition, activity, and settlement, and provides a large-scale reconstitution of the foreign-born population and its different components

    THE DEVELOPMENT OF GUIDELINES FOR DESIGNING DIGITAL MEDIA TO ENGAGE VISITORS WITH NON-VISIBLE OUTDOOR HERITAGE

    This PhD investigates the role of digital media in optimising visitor engagement with non-visible outdoor heritage. Motivated by concerns that digital media products developed for the heritage sector might not be reaching their potential to enrich the visit experience and concerned about a lack of clarity as to what constitutes visitor engagement; this thesis proposes guidance for the production of interpretive digital media and a framework for visitor engagement. Cultural heritage sites featured in this study are characteristically outdoor locations; frequently non-stewarded with very little tangible evidence of the historical or cultural relevance of the site. The unique potential of digital media products to address the specific challenges of engaging visitors with invisible heritage in these locations is discussed within this thesis. The practice of interpreting heritage is investigated to identify the processes, stages, experiences and behavioural states associated with a high level of engagement. Visitor engagement is defined in this study as being a transformational experience in which the visitor’s emotional and/or cognitive relationship with the heritage is altered. This is achieved when the visitor sufficiently experiences appropriate states of engagement across all stages of the visitor engagement framework. This study proposes guidance to advise and support heritage professionals and their associated designers in the design, development and implementation of interpretive digital media products. Within this guide sits the engagement framework which proposes a framework for engagement, defining the stages (process) and the states (experiences and behaviours) of visitor engagement with cultural heritage. In using this resource the cultural heritage practitioner can be confident of their capacity to run and deliver interpretive digital media projects regardless of their expertise in design or technology. This thesis proposes that well designed interpretive digital media can optimise the engagement of visitors in ways which cannot be achieved by any other single method of interpretation. This PhD contributes a design guide and an engagement framework to the existing field of knowledge regarding interpretive digital design
