Technical Interoperability for Machine Connectivity on the Shop Floor
This paper presents a generic technical solution that can increase Industry 4.0 maturity by collecting data from sensors and control systems on the shop floor. Within the research project “5G-Enabled Manufacturing”, an LTE (Long-Term Evolution) network with 5G technologies was deployed on the shop floor to enable fast and scalable connectivity. This network was used to connect a grinding machine to a remote private cloud where data was stored and streamed to a data analytics center. This enabled visibility and transparency of the production data, which is the basis for Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing. The solution is described with a focus on high-level communication technologies above wireless communication standards. These technologies are discussed regarding technical interoperability, focusing on the system layout, communication standards, and open systems. From the discussion, it can be derived that generic solutions such as this are possible, but manufacturing end-users must expand and further internalize knowledge of future information and communication technologies to reduce their dependency on equipment and technology providers
A Framework for Analyzing Fog-Cloud Computing Cooperation Applied to Information Processing of UAVs
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are a relatively new technology. Their
application can often involve complex and unseen problems. For instance, they
can work in a cooperative-based environment under the supervision of a ground
station to speed up critical decision-making processes. However, the amount of
information exchanged among the aircraft and ground station is limited by high
distances, low bandwidth size, restricted processing capability, and energy
constraints. These drawbacks restrain large-scale operations such as large area
inspections. New distributed state-of-the-art processing architectures, such as
fog computing, can improve latency, scalability, and efficiency to meet time
constraints via data acquisition, processing, and storage at different levels.
Under these amendments, this research work proposes a mathematical model to
analyze distribution-based UAVs topologies and a fog-cloud computing framework
for large-scale mission and search operations. The tests have successfully
predicted latency and other operational constraints, allowing the analysis of
fog-computing advantages over traditional cloud-computing architectures.Comment: Volume 2019, Article ID 7497924, 14 page
On the energy efficiency of spatial modulation concepts
Spatial Modulation (SM) is a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) transmission technique
which realizes low complexity implementations in wireless communication systems. Due the
transmission principle of SM, only one Radio Frequency (RF) chain is required in the transmitter.
Therefore, the complexity of the transmitter is lower compared to the complexity of
traditional MIMO schemes, such as Spatial MultipleXing (SMX). In addition, because of the
single RF chain configuration of SM, only one Power Amplifier (PA) is required in the transmitter.
Hence, SM has the potential to exhibit significant Energy Efficiency (EE) benefits. At
the receiver side, due to the SM transmission mechanism, detection is conducted using a low
complexity (single stream) Maximum Likelihood (ML) detector. However, despite the use of a
single stream detector, SM achieves a multiplexing gain.
A point-to-point closed-loop variant of SM is receive space modulation. In receive space modulation,
the concept of SMis extended at the receiver side, using linear precoding with Channel
State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT). Even though receive space modulation does not
preserve the single RF chain configuration of SM, due to the deployed linear precoding, it
can be efficiently incorporated in a Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) or in a Virtual
Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (VMIMO) architecture.
Inspired by the potentials of SM, the objectives of this thesis are the evaluation of the EE of
SM and its extension in different forms of MIMO communication. In particular, a realistic
power model for the power consumption of a Base Station (BS) is deployed in order to assess
the EE of SM in terms of Mbps/J. By taking into account the whole power supply of a BS and
considering a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) multiple access scheme, it is shown that
SM is significantly more energy efficient compared to the traditional MIMO techniques. In
the considered system setup, it is shown that SM is up to 67% more energy efficient compared
to the benchmark systems. In addition, the concept of space modulation is researched at the
receiver side. Specifically, based on the union bound technique, a framework for the evaluation
of the Average Bit Error Probability (ABEP), diversity order, and coding gain of receive space
modulation is developed. Because receive space modulation deploys linear precoding with
CSIT, two new precoding methods which utilize imperfect CSIT are proposed. Furthermore, in
this thesis, receive space modulation is incorporated in the broadcast channel. The derivation of
the theoretical ABEP, diversity order, and coding gain of the new broadcast scheme is provided.
It is concluded that receive space modulation is able to outperform the corresponding traditional
MIMO scheme. Finally, SM, receive space modulation, and relaying are combined in order
to form a novel virtual MIMO architecture. It is shown that the new architecture practically
eliminates or reduces the problem of the inefficient relaying of the uncoordinated virtual MIMO
space modulation architectures. This is undertaken by using precoding in a novel fashion. The
evaluation of the new architecture is conducted using simulation and theoretical results
Non-cooperative power control game in D2D underlying networks with variant system conditions
In this paper, the problem of power control using a game theoretic approach based on sigmoid cost function is studied for device-to-device (D2D) communications underlying cellular networks. A non-cooperative game, where each D2D transmitter and a cellular user select their own transmit power level independently, is analyzed to minimize their user-serving cost function and achieve a target signal to interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) requirement. It is proved analytically that the Nash equilibrium point of the game exists and it is unique under certain constraints. Numerical results verify the analysis and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed game with variant system conditions, such as path loss exponents, target SINR, interference caused by the cellular user, pricing coefficients, and sigmoid control parameter
An Analysis of Routing Protocol Metrics in Wireless Mesh Networks
Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN)s play an important
role in todays communication and they are expected to increase
in proliferation in the field of wireless communication in the
near future. Researchers in the area of WMNs address some
issues like low throughput and high latency. Routing Protocols
in WMNs have a vital role in data communication and the key
parameter in all routing protocols is link metrics. In this paper
the majority of link metrics in WMNs are studied in different
categories. Link-quality and traffic-aware metrics account for
most of the metrics, however multi channel network and cognitive
radio systems are also considered in detail. In each section, by
reviewing the metrics and its performance in detail, summary
and comparison tables of link quality metrics are also provided
to enable better understanding of this topic
A Survey of Enabling Technologies for Smart Communities
In 2016, the Japanese Government publicized an initiative and a call to action for the implementation of a Super Smart Society announced as Society 5.0. The stated goal of Society 5.0 is to meet the various needs of the members of society through the provisioning of goods and services to those who require them, when they are required and in the amount required, thus enabling the citizens to live an active and comfortable life. In spite of its genuine appeal, details of a feasible path to Society 5.0 are conspicuously missing. The first main goal of this survey is to suggest such an implementation path. Specifically, we define a Smart Community as a human-centric entity where technology is used to equip the citizenry with information and services that they can use to inform their decisions. The arbiter of this ecosystem of services is a Marketplace of Services that will reward services aligned with the wants and needs of the citizens, while discouraging the proliferation of those that are not. In the limit, the Smart Community we defined will morph into Society 5.0. At that point, the Marketplace of Services will become a platform for the co-creation of services by a close cooperation between the citizens and their government. The second objective and contribution of this survey paper is to review known technologies that, in our opinion, will play a significant role in the transition to Society 5.0. These technologies will be surveyed in chronological order, as newer technologies often extend old technologies while avoiding their limitations

Traditionally, previous generations of mobile cellular networks have been designed with Quality of Service (QoS) criteria in mind, so that they manage to meet specific service requirements. Quality of Experience (QoE) has, however, recently emerged as a concept, disrupting the design of future network generations by giving clear emphasis on the actually achieved user experience. The emergence of the QoE concept has been a result of the inevitable strong transition that the Telecom industry is currently experiencing from system-centric networks to more user-centric solutions and objectives. Mobile network operators, service providers, application developers, as well as other stakeholders involved in the service provisioning chain have been attracted by the opportunities that the integration of the QoE concept could bring to their business; indeed, the provisioned QoE constitutes a determining factor of differentiation among different stakeholders, a tendency which is expected to become even more intense in the years to come.
Motivated by this boost towards user-centricity, the objective of the research conducted in this thesis is to explore the challenges and opportunities that arise in modern mobile cellular networks when QoE is considered. Such opportunities concern, first of all, the possibility to comprehend the QoE that a provider achieves when provisioning a service. This can be enabled by the implementation and integration of QoE assessment methods into the real-time operation of a network. Then, the next step is the exploitation of collected QoE-related intelligence in order to re-examine existing network-layer mechanisms (e.g., radio scheduling), or application-layer mechanisms (e.g., video streaming), as well as propose novel cross-layer approaches towards ameliorating the achieved QoE. Moreover, the opportunity emerges to propose novel algorithms that stem from the inherent idiosyncrasies of QoE, such as the non-linear impact of QoS-related parameters on QoE, as a way to further enhance the users’ QoE. In this direction, throughout this thesis, QoE estimation models and metrics are explored and exploited in order to quantify QoE and thus, to improve existing mechanisms of mobile cellular networks.
The core of this thesis is the proposal of a QoE provisioning cycle that allows the control, monitoring (i.e., modeling) and management of QoE in a cellular network. Each one of these functions is further analyzed, while emphasis is given on the modeling and management operations. In terms of modeling, QoE assessment methods and QoE-related performance indicators are described and classified. Parametric quality estimation is identified as the most appealing type of QoE estimation in mobile cellular networks, thus, it is thoroughly described for widely used types of services, such as Voice over IP (VoIP) and video streaming.
In terms of QoE management, novel QoE-aware mechanisms that demonstrate QoE improvements for the users are proposed, namely: a) a QoE-driven Device-to-Device (D2D) communication management scheme that enhances end-user QoE, b) a “consistent” radio scheduling algorithm that improves the end-user QoE by mitigating throughput fluctuations, and c) a context-aware HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) mechanism that successfully mitigates stallings (i.e., video freezing events) in the context of bandwidth-challenging scenarios. Moreover, a programmable QoE-SDN APP into the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) architecture is introduced, which enables network feedback exposure from mobile network operators to video service providers, revealing QoE benefits for the customers of video providers and bandwidth savings for the network operators.
Overall, this thesis promotes the uniting of the domain of QoE with the domain of mobile communications, as well as the collaboration of mutual-interest between mobile network operators (network layer) and service providers (application layer), presenting the high potential from such approaches for all involved stakeholders
The Four-C Framework for High Capacity Ultra-Low Latency in 5G Networks: A Review
Network latency will be a critical performance metric for the Fifth Generation (5G) networks
expected to be fully rolled out in 2020 through the IMT-2020 project. The multi-user multiple-input
multiple-output (MU-MIMO) technology is a key enabler for the 5G massive connectivity criterion,
especially from the massive densification perspective. Naturally, it appears that 5G MU-MIMO will
face a daunting task to achieve an end-to-end 1 ms ultra-low latency budget if traditional network
set-ups criteria are strictly adhered to. Moreover, 5G latency will have added dimensions of scalability
and flexibility compared to prior existing deployed technologies. The scalability dimension caters
for meeting rapid demand as new applications evolve. While flexibility complements the scalability
dimension by investigating novel non-stacked protocol architecture. The goal of this review paper
is to deploy ultra-low latency reduction framework for 5G communications considering flexibility
and scalability. The Four (4) C framework consisting of cost, complexity, cross-layer and computing
is hereby analyzed and discussed. The Four (4) C framework discusses several emerging new
technologies of software defined network (SDN), network function virtualization (NFV) and fog
networking. This review paper will contribute significantly towards the future implementation of
flexible and high capacity ultra-low latency 5G communications
