    Improving Facial Analysis and Performance Driven Animation through Disentangling Identity and Expression

    We present techniques for improving performance driven facial animation, emotion recognition, and facial key-point or landmark prediction using learned identity invariant representations. Established approaches to these problems can work well if sufficient examples and labels for a particular identity are available and factors of variation are highly controlled. However, labeled examples of facial expressions, emotions and key-points for new individuals are difficult and costly to obtain. In this paper we improve the ability of techniques to generalize to new and unseen individuals by explicitly modeling previously seen variations related to identity and expression. We use a weakly-supervised approach in which identity labels are used to learn the different factors of variation linked to identity separately from factors related to expression. We show how probabilistic modeling of these sources of variation allows one to learn identity-invariant representations for expressions which can then be used to identity-normalize various procedures for facial expression analysis and animation control. We also show how to extend the widely used techniques of active appearance models and constrained local models through replacing the underlying point distribution models which are typically constructed using principal component analysis with identity-expression factorized representations. We present a wide variety of experiments in which we consistently improve performance on emotion recognition, markerless performance-driven facial animation and facial key-point tracking.Comment: to appear in Image and Vision Computing Journal (IMAVIS

    A Bayesian Framework for Human Body Pose Tracking from Depth Image Sequences

    This paper addresses the problem of accurate and robust tracking of 3D human body pose from depth image sequences. Recovering the large number of degrees of freedom in human body movements from a depth image sequence is challenging due to the need to resolve the depth ambiguity caused by self-occlusions and the difficulty to recover from tracking failure. Human body poses could be estimated through model fitting using dense correspondences between depth data and an articulated human model (local optimization method). Although it usually achieves a high accuracy due to dense correspondences, it may fail to recover from tracking failure. Alternately, human pose may be reconstructed by detecting and tracking human body anatomical landmarks (key-points) based on low-level depth image analysis. While this method (key-point based method) is robust and recovers from tracking failure, its pose estimation accuracy depends solely on image-based localization accuracy of key-points. To address these limitations, we present a flexible Bayesian framework for integrating pose estimation results obtained by methods based on key-points and local optimization. Experimental results are shown and performance comparison is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach

    Moving cast shadows detection methods for video surveillance applications

    Moving cast shadows are a major concern in today’s performance from broad range of many vision-based surveillance applications because they highly difficult the object classification task. Several shadow detection methods have been reported in the literature during the last years. They are mainly divided into two domains. One usually works with static images, whereas the second one uses image sequences, namely video content. In spite of the fact that both cases can be analogously analyzed, there is a difference in the application field. The first case, shadow detection methods can be exploited in order to obtain additional geometric and semantic cues about shape and position of its casting object (’shape from shadows’) as well as the localization of the light source. While in the second one, the main purpose is usually change detection, scene matching or surveillance (usually in a background subtraction context). Shadows can in fact modify in a negative way the shape and color of the target object and therefore affect the performance of scene analysis and interpretation in many applications. This chapter wills mainly reviews shadow detection methods as well as their taxonomies related with the second case, thus aiming at those shadows which are associated with moving objects (moving shadows).Peer Reviewe

    Vision-based people detection using depth information for social robots: an experimental evaluation

    Robots are starting to be applied in areas which involve sharing space with humans. In particular, social robots and people will coexist closely because the former are intended to interact with the latter. In this context, it is crucial that robots are aware of the presence of people around them. Traditionally, people detection has been performed using a flow of two-dimensional images. However, in nature, animals' sight perceives their surroundings using color and depth information. In this work, we present new people detectors that make use of the data provided by depth sensors and red-green-blue images to deal with the characteristics of human-robot interaction scenarios. These people detectors are based on previous works using two-dimensional images and existing people detectors from different areas. The disparity of the input and output data used by these types of algorithms usually complicates their integration into robot control architectures. We propose a common interface that can be used by any people detector, resulting in numerous advantages. Several people detectors using depth information and the common interface have been implemented and evaluated. The results show a great diversity among the different algorithms. Each one has a particular domain of use, which is reflected in the results.     Novel statistical modeling methods for traffic video analysis

    Video analysis is an active and rapidly expanding research area in computer vision and artificial intelligence due to its broad applications in modern society. Many methods have been proposed to analyze the videos, but many challenging factors remain untackled. In this dissertation, four statistical modeling methods are proposed to address some challenging traffic video analysis problems under adverse illumination and weather conditions. First, a new foreground detection method is presented to detect the foreground objects in videos. A novel Global Foreground Modeling (GFM) method, which estimates a global probability density function for the foreground and applies the Bayes decision rule for model selection, is proposed to model the foreground globally. A Local Background Modeling (LBM) method is applied by choosing the most significant Gaussian density in the Gaussian mixture model to model the background locally for each pixel. In addition, to mitigate the correlation effects of the Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) color space on the independence assumption among the color component images, some other color spaces are investigated for feature extraction. To further enhance the discriminatory power of the input feature vector, the horizontal and vertical Haar wavelet features and the temporal information are integrated into the color features to define a new 12-dimensional feature vector space. Finally, the Bayes classifier is applied for the classification of the foreground and the background pixels. Second, a novel moving cast shadow detection method is presented to detect and remove the cast shadows from the foreground. Specifically, a set of new chromatic criteria is presented to detect the candidate shadow pixels in the Hue, Saturation, and Value (HSV) color space. A new shadow region detection method is then proposed to cluster the candidate shadow pixels into shadow regions. A statistical shadow model, which uses a single Gaussian distribution to model the shadow class, is presented to classify shadow pixels. Additionally, an aggregated shadow detection strategy is presented to integrate the shadow detection results and remove the shadows from the foreground. Third, a novel statistical modeling method is presented to solve the automated road recognition problem for the Region of Interest (RoI) detection in traffic video analysis. A temporal feature guided statistical modeling method is proposed for road modeling. Additionally, a model pruning strategy is applied to estimate the road model. Then, a new road region detection method is presented to detect the road regions in the video. The method applies discriminant functions to classify each pixel in the estimated background image into a road class or a non-road class, respectively. The proposed method provides an intra-cognitive communication mode between the RoI selection and video analysis systems. Fourth, a novel anomalous driving detection method in videos, which can detect unsafe anomalous driving behaviors is introduced. A new Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) method is proposed to extract the velocities and trajectories of moving foreground objects in video. The new MOT method is a motion-based tracking method, which integrates the temporal and spatial features. Then, a novel Gaussian Local Velocity (GLV) modeling method is presented to model the normal moving behavior in traffic videos. The GLV model is built for every location in the video frame, and updated online. Finally, a discriminant function is proposed to detect anomalous driving behaviors. To assess the feasibility of the proposed statistical modeling methods, several popular public video datasets, as well as the real traffic videos from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) are applied.     Embodied Visual Perception Models For Human Behavior Understanding

    Many modern applications require extracting the core attributes of human behavior such as a person\u27s attention, intent, or skill level from the visual data. There are two main challenges related to this problem. First, we need models that can represent visual data in terms of object-level cues. Second, we need models that can infer the core behavioral attributes from the visual data. We refer to these two challenges as ``learning to see\u27\u27, and ``seeing to learn\u27\u27 respectively. In this PhD thesis, we have made progress towards addressing both challenges. We tackle the problem of ``learning to see\u27\u27 by developing methods that extract object-level information directly from raw visual data. This includes, two top-down contour detectors, DeepEdge and HfL, which can be used to aid high-level vision tasks such as object detection. Furthermore, we also present two semantic object segmentation methods, Boundary Neural Fields (BNFs), and Convolutional Random Walk Networks (RWNs), which integrate low-level affinity cues into an object segmentation process. We then shift our focus to video-level understanding, and present a Spatiotemporal Sampling Network (STSN), which can be used for video object detection, and discriminative motion feature learning. Afterwards, we transition into the second subproblem of ``seeing to learn\u27\u27, for which we leverage first-person GoPro cameras that record what people see during a particular activity. We aim to infer the core behavior attributes such as a person\u27s attention, intention, and his skill level from such first-person data. To do so, we first propose a concept of action-objects--the objects that capture person\u27s conscious visual (watching a TV) or tactile (taking a cup) interactions. We then introduce two models, EgoNet and Visual-Spatial Network (VSN), which detect action-objects in supervised and unsupervised settings respectively. Afterwards, we focus on a behavior understanding task in a complex basketball activity. We present a method for evaluating players\u27 skill level from their first-person basketball videos, and also a model that predicts a player\u27s future motion trajectory from a single first-person image

    Foreground object segmentation in RGB-D data implemented on GPU

    This paper presents a GPU implementation of two foreground object segmentation algorithms: Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) and Pixel Based Adaptive Segmenter (PBAS) modified for RGB-D data support. The simultaneous use of colour (RGB) and depth (D) data allows to improve segmentation accuracy, especially in case of colour camouflage, illumination changes and occurrence of shadows. Three GPUs were used to accelerate calculations: embedded NVIDIA Jetson TX2 (Maxwell architecture), mobile NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050m (Pascal architecture) and efficient NVIDIA RTX 2070 (Turing architecture). Segmentation accuracy comparable to previously published works was obtained. Moreover, the use of a GPU platform allowed to get real-time image processing.
