    An Ecological Approach to Smart Homes for Health Care Services: Conceptual Framework of a Smart Servicescape Wheel

    Background: Smart homes are considered effective solutions for home health care for the elderly, as smart home technologies can reduce care costs and improve elderly residents' independence. To develop a greater understanding of smart homes for health care services (SHHSs), this study accentuated the necessity of ecological approaches with an emphasis on environmental constraints. This study was based on 2 rationales: (1) users are inclined to perceive the service quality and service experience from environments (ie, servicescape) owing to the intangibility of health care and the pervasiveness of smart home technologies, and (2) both service domains are complex adaptive systems in which diversified and undefined service experiences-not only a few intended service flows-can be generated by complex combinations of servicescape elements. Objective: This study proposed the conceptual framework of a Smart Servicescape Wheel (SSW) as an ecological approach delineating the extensive spectrum of environmental constraints in SHHSs. Methods: The SSW framework was established based on a literature review. Results: Generally divided by perceptible and imperceptible servicescapes, the SSW consists of the perceptible Physical scape (ie, hardware components, environmental cues, and human states) and Social scape (ie, service relationships and social relationships) as well as the imperceptible Datascape (ie, computing intelligence, databases, and communication networks). Following the ecological approach, each category of the SSW is subdivided and defined at the level of components or functions. Conclusions: The SSW's strengths lie in the various application opportunities for SHHSs. In terms of service planning and development, the SSW can be utilized to (1) establish the requirements for SHHS development, (2) associate with work domain analysis by defining component layers, and (3) understand the real contexts of SHHSs for the enhanced prediction of diverse service experiences.     Real-Time Scheduling Method for Middleware of Industrial Automation Devices

    In this study, a real-time scheduling algorithm, which supports periodic and sporadic executions with event handling, is proposed for the middleware of industrial automation devices or controllers, such as industrial robots and programmable logic controllers. When sensors and embedded controllers are included in control loops having different control periods, they should transmit their data periodically to the controllers and actuators; otherwise, fatal failure of the system including the devices could occur. The proposed scheduling algorithm manages modules, namely, the thread type (or .so type) and process type (or .exe type), for periodic execution, sporadic execution, and non-real-time execution. The program structures for the thread-type and process-type modules that can make the proposed algorithm manage the modules efficiently are suggested; then, they are applied in periodic and sporadic executions. For sporadic executions, the occurrences of events are first examined to invoke the execution modules corresponding to the events. The proposed scheduling algorithm is implemented using the Xenomai real-time operating system (OS) and Linux, and it is validated through several examples

    Assessing Sustainability in the Shipbuilding Supply Chain 4.0: A Systematic Review

    The supply chain is currently taking on a very important role in organizations seeking to improve the competitiveness and profitability of the company. Its transversal character mainly places it in an unbeatable position to achieve this role. This article, through a study of each of the key enabling technologies of Industry 4.0, aims to obtain a general overview of the current state of the art in shipbuilding adapted to these technologies. To do so, a systematic review of what the scientific community says is carried out, dividing each of the technologies into different categories. In addition, the global vision of countries interested in each of the enabling technologies is also studied. Both studies present a general vision to the companies of the concerns of the scientific community, thus encouraging research on the subject that is focused on the sustainability of the shipbuilding supply chain

    Technological measures of forefront road identification for vehicle comfort and safety improvement

    This paper presents the technological measures currently being developed at institutes and vehicle research centres dealing with forefront road identification. In this case, road identification corresponds with the surface irregularities and road surface type, which are evaluated by laser scanning and image analysis. Real-time adaptation, adaptation in advance and system external informing are stated as sequential generations of vehicle suspension and active braking systems where road identification is significantly important. Active and semi-active suspensions with their adaptation technologies for comfort and road holding characteristics are analysed. Also, an active braking system such as Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) have been considered as very sensitive to the road friction state. Artificial intelligence methods of deep learning have been presented as a promising image analysis method for classification of 12 different road surface types. Concluding the achieved benefit of road identification for traffic safety improvement is presented with reference to analysed research reports and assumptions made after the initial evaluation

    Precision Agriculture for Crop and Livestock Farming—Brief Review

    In the last few decades, agriculture has played an important role in the worldwide economy. The need to produce more food for a rapidly growing population is creating pressure on crop and animal production and a negative impact to the environment. On the other hand, smart farming technologies are becoming increasingly common in modern agriculture to assist in optimizing agricultural and livestock production and minimizing the wastes and costs. Precision agriculture (PA) is a technology-enabled, data-driven approach to farming management that observes, measures, and analyzes the needs of individual fields and crops. Precision livestock farming (PLF), relying on the automatic monitoring of individual animals, is used for animal growth, milk production, and the detection of diseases as well as to monitor animal behavior and their physical environment, among others. This study aims to briefly review recent scientific and technological trends in PA and their application in crop and livestock farming, serving as a simple research guide for the researcher and farmer in the application of technology to agriculture.     Soft Gloves: A Review on Recent Developments in Actuation, Sensing, Control and Applications

    Interest in soft gloves, both robotic and haptic, has enormously grown over the past decade, due to their inherent compliance, which makes them particularly suitable for direct interaction with the human hand. Robotic soft gloves have been developed for hand rehabilitation, for ADLs assistance, or sometimes for both. Haptic soft gloves may be applied in virtual reality (VR) applications or to give sensory feedback in combination with prostheses or to control robots. This paper presents an updated review of the state of the art of soft gloves, with a particular focus on actuation, sensing, and control, combined with a detailed analysis of the devices according to their application field. The review is organized on two levels: a prospective review allows the highlighting of the main trends in soft gloves development and applications, and an analytical review performs an in-depth analysis of the technical solutions developed and implemented in the revised scientific research. Additional minor evaluations integrate the analysis, such as a synthetic investigation of the main results in the clinical studies and trials referred in literature which involve soft gloves

    Deep Learning Based Methods for Outdoor Robot Localization and Navigation

    The number of elderly people is increasing around the globe. In order to support the growing of ageing society, mobile robot is one of viable choices for assisting the elders in their daily activities. These activities happen in any places, either indoor or outdoor. Although outdoor activities benefit the elders in many ways, outdoor environments contain difficulties from their unpredictable natures. Mobile robots for supporting humans in outdoor environments must automatically traverse through various difficulties in the environments using suitable navigation systems.Core components of mobile robots always include the navigation segments. Navigation system helps guiding the robot to its destination where it can perform its designated tasks. There are various tools to be chosen for navigation systems. Outdoor environments are mostly open for conventional navigation tools such as Global Positioning System (GPS) devices. In this thesis three systems for localization and navigation of mobile robots based on visual data and deep learning algorithms are proposed. The first localization system is based on landmark detection. The Faster Regional-Convolutional Neural Network (Faster R-CNN) detects landmarks and signs in the captured image. A Feed-Forward Neural Network (FFNN) is trained to determine robot location coordinates and compass orientation from detected landmarks. The dataset consists of images, geolocation data and labeled bounding boxes to train and test two proposed localization methods. Results are illustrated with absolute errors from the comparisons between localization results and reference geolocation data in the dataset. The second system is the navigation system based on visual data and a deep reinforcement learning algorithm called Deep Q Network (DQN). The employed DQN automatically guides the mobile robot with visual data in the form of images, which received from the only Universal Serial Bus (USB) camera that attached to the robot. DQN consists of a deep neural network called convolutional neural network (CNN), and a reinforcement learning algorithm named Q-Learning. It can make decisions with visual data as input, using experiences from consequences of trial-and-error attempts. Our DQN agents are trained in the simulation environments provided by a platform based on a First-Person Shooter (FPS) game named ViZDoom. Simulation is implemented for training to avoid any possible damage on the real robot during trial-and-error process. Perspective from the simulation is the same as if a camera is attached to the front of the mobile robot. There are many differences between the simulation and the real world. We applied a markerbased Augmented Reality (AR) algorithm to reduce differences between the simulation and the world by altering visual data from the camera with resources from the simulation.The second system is assigned the task of simple navigation to the robot, in which the starting location is fixed but the goal location is random in the designated zone. The robot must be able to detect and track the goal object using a USB camera as its only sensor. Once started, the robot must move from its starting location to the designated goal object. Our DQN navigation method is tested in the simulation and on the real robot. Performances of our DQN are measured quantitatively via average total scores and the number of success navigation attempts. The results show that our DQN can effectively guide a mobile robot to the goal object of the simple navigation tasks, for both the simulation and the real world.The third system employs a Transfer Learning (TL) strategy to reduce training time and resources required for the training of newly added tasks of DQN agents. The new task is the task of reaching the goal while also avoiding obstacles at the same time. Additionally, the starting and the goal locations are all random within the specified areas. The employed transfer learning strategy uses the whole network of the DQN agent trained for the first simple navigation task as the base for training the DQN agent for the second task. The training in our TL strategy decrease the exploration factor, which cause the agent to rely on the existing knowledge from the base network more than randomly selecting actions during the training. It results in the decreased training time, in which optimal solutions can be found faster than training from scratch.We evaluate performances of our TL strategy by comparing the DQN agents trained with our TL at different exploration factor values and the DQN agent trained from scratch. Additionally, agents trained from our TL are trained with the decreased number of episodes to extensively display performances of our TL agents. All DQN agents for the second navigation task are tested in the simulation to avoid any possible and uncontrollable damages from the obstacles. Performances are measured through success attempts and average total scores, same as in the first navigation task. Results show that DQN agents trained via the TL strategy can greatly outperform the agent trained from scratch, despite the lower number of training episodes.博士(工学)法政大学 (Hosei University
