    Network performance & Quality of service in data networks involving spectrum utilization techniques

    This research has developed technique to improve the quality of service in wireless data networks that employ spectrum utilization techniques based on Cognitive Radio. Most multiple dimension implementations focus on maximizing the Successful Communication Probability SCP in order to improve the wireless network utilization. However this usually has a negative impact on the Quality of Service, since increasing the SCP leads to increasing signal interference and Packet Loss, and thus network performance deterioration. The Multiple Dimension Cognitive Radio technique is a new technique, proposed in this thesis, that improves the Cognitive Radio Networks (CRN) efficiency by giving opportunity to secondary users (Unlicensed users) to use several dimension such as time, frequency, modulation, coding, and antenna directionality to increase their opportunity in finding spectrum hole. In order to draw a balance between improving the networking utilization and keeping the network performance at an acceptable level, this thesis proposes a new model of multiple dimension CR which provides a compromise between maximizing the SCP and network throughput from one side and keeping the QoS within the accepted thresholds from the other side. This is important so as to avoid network performance degradation which may result from the high user density in single wireless domain as a result of maximizing the SCP. In this research, a full Cognitive Radio model has been implemented in the OPNET simulator by developing modified nodes with the appropriate coding which include basic functionality. The Purpose of this model is to simulate the CR environment and study the network performance after applying the controlled multi dimension technique presented here. The proposed technique observes the channel throughput on TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) level, also QoS KPIs (Key Performance Index) like Packet Loss and Bit Error rate, during the operation of the CR multi dimension technique and alerts the system when the throughput degrades below a certain level. The proposed technique has interactive cautious nature which keeps monitoring the network performance and once find evident on network performance deterioration it takes corrective action, terminates low priority connections and releases over utilized channels, in order to keep the performance accepted

    Fuse-N: Framework for unified simulation environment for network-on-chip

    Steady advancements in semiconductor technology over the past few decades have marked incipience of Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoCs). Owing to the inability of traditional bus-based communication system to scale well with improving microchip technologies, researchers have proposed Network-on-Chip (NoC) as the on-chip communication model. Current uni-processor centric modeling methodology does not address the new design challenges introduced by MPSoCs, thus calling for efficient simulation frameworks capable of capturing the interplay between the application, the architecture, and the network. Addressing these new challenges requires a framework that assists the designer at different abstraction levels of system design; This thesis concentrates on developing a framework for unified simulation environment for NoCs (fuse-N) which simplifies the design space exploration for NoCs by offering a comprehensive simulation support. The framework synthesizes the network infrastructure and the communication model and optimizes application mapping for design constraints. The proposed framework is a hardware-software co-design implementation using SystemC 2.1 and C++. Simulation results show the architectural, network and resource allocation behavior and highlight the quantitative relationships between various design choices; Also, a novel off-line non-preemptive static Traffic Aware Scheduling (TAS) policy is proposed for hard NoC platforms. The proposed scheduling policy maps the application onto the NoC architecture keeping track of the network traffic, which is generated with every resource and communication path allocation. TAS has been evaluated for various design metrics such as application completion time, resource utilization and task throughput. Simulation results show significant improvements over traditional approaches

    Toward Distributed At-scale Hybrid Network Test with Emulation and Simulation Symbiosis

    In the past decade or so, significant advances were made in the field of Future Internet Architecture (FIA) design. Undoubtedly, the size of Future Internet will increase tremendously, and so will the complexity of its users’ behaviors. This advancement means most of future Internet applications and services can only achieve and demonstrate full potential on a large-scale basis. The development of network testbeds that can validate key design decisions and expose operational issues at scale is essential to FIA research. In conjunction with the development and advancement of FIA, cyber-infrastructure testbeds have also achieved remarkable progress. For meaningful network studies, it is indispensable to utilize cyber-infrastructure testbeds appropriately in order to obtain accurate experiment results. That said, existing current network experimentation is intrinsically deficient. The existing testbeds do not offer scalability, flexibility, and realism at the same time. This dissertation aims to construct a hybrid system of conducting at-scale network studies and experiments by exploiting the distributed computing ability of current testbeds. First, this work presents a synchronization of parallel discrete event simulation that offers the simulation with transparent scalability and performance on various high-end computing platforms. The parallel simulator that we implement is configured so that it can self-adapt for the performance while running on supercomputers with disparate architectures. The simulator could be used to handle models of different sizes, varying modeling details, and different complexity levels. Second, this works addresses the issue of researching network design and implementation realistically at scale, through the use of distributed cyber-infrastructure testbeds. An existing symbiotic approach is applied to integrate emulation with simulation so that they can overcome the limitations of physical setup. The symbiotic method is used to improve the capabilities of a specific emulator, Mininet. In this case, Mininet can be used to run applications directly on the virtual machines and software switches, with network connectivity represented by detailed simulation at scale. We also propose a method for using the symbiotic approach to coordinate separate Mininet instances, each representing a different set of the overlapping network flows. This approach provides a significant improvement to the scalability of the network experiments

    Quality of experience and access network traffic management of HTTP adaptive video streaming

    The thesis focuses on Quality of Experience (QoE) of HTTP adaptive video streaming (HAS) and traffic management in access networks to improve the QoE of HAS. First, the QoE impact of adaptation parameters and time on layer was investigated with subjective crowdsourcing studies. The results were used to compute a QoE-optimal adaptation strategy for given video and network conditions. This allows video service providers to develop and benchmark improved adaptation logics for HAS. Furthermore, the thesis investigated concepts to monitor video QoE on application and network layer, which can be used by network providers in the QoE-aware traffic management cycle. Moreover, an analytic and simulative performance evaluation of QoE-aware traffic management on a bottleneck link was conducted. Finally, the thesis investigated socially-aware traffic management for HAS via Wi-Fi offloading of mobile HAS flows. A model for the distribution of public Wi-Fi hotspots and a platform for socially-aware traffic management on private home routers was presented. A simulative performance evaluation investigated the impact of Wi-Fi offloading on the QoE and energy consumption of mobile HAS.Die Doktorarbeit beschäftigt sich mit Quality of Experience (QoE) – der subjektiv empfundenen Dienstgüte – von adaptivem HTTP Videostreaming (HAS) und mit Verkehrsmanagement, das in Zugangsnetzwerken eingesetzt werden kann, um die QoE des adaptiven Videostreamings zu verbessern. Zuerst wurde der Einfluss von Adaptionsparameters und der Zeit pro Qualitätsstufe auf die QoE von adaptivem Videostreaming mittels subjektiver Crowdsourcingstudien untersucht. Die Ergebnisse wurden benutzt, um die QoE-optimale Adaptionsstrategie für gegebene Videos und Netzwerkbedingungen zu berechnen. Dies ermöglicht Dienstanbietern von Videostreaming verbesserte Adaptionsstrategien für adaptives Videostreaming zu entwerfen und zu benchmarken. Weiterhin untersuchte die Arbeit Konzepte zum Überwachen von QoE von Videostreaming in der Applikation und im Netzwerk, die von Netzwerkbetreibern im Kreislauf des QoE-bewussten Verkehrsmanagements eingesetzt werden können. Es wurde ein Modell für die Verteilung von öffentlichen WLAN Zugangspunkte und eine Plattform für sozialbewusstes Verkehrsmanagement auf privaten, häuslichen WLAN Routern vorgestellt. Abschließend untersuchte eine simulative Leistungsbewertung den Einfluss von WLAN Offloading auf die QoE und den Energieverbrauch von mobilem adaptivem Videostreaming
