Public mental health through social media in the post COVID-19 era
Social media is a powerful communication tool and a reflection of our digital environment. Social media acted as an augmenter and influencer during and after COVID-19. Many of the people sharing social media posts were not actually aware of their mental health status. This situation warrants to automate the detection of mental disorders. This paper presents a methodology for the detection of mental disorders using micro facial expressions. Micro-expressions are momentary, involuntary facial expressions that can be indicative of deeper feelings and mental states. Nevertheless, manually detecting and interpreting micro-expressions can be rather challenging. A deep learning HybridMicroNet model, based on convolution neural networks, is proposed for emotion recognition from micro-expressions. Further, a case study for the detection of mental health has been undertaken. The findings demonstrated that the proposed model achieved a high accuracy when attempting to diagnose mental health disorders based on micro-expressions. The attained accuracy on the CASME dataset was 99.08%, whereas the accuracy that was achieved on SAMM dataset was 97.62%. Based on these findings, deep learning may prove to be an effective method for diagnosing mental health conditions by analyzing micro-expressions
Social Robots in Hospitals: A Systematic Review
Hospital environments are facing new challenges this century. One of the most important is the quality of services to patients. Social robots are gaining prominence due to the advantages they offer; in particular, several of their main uses have proven beneficial during the pandemic. This study aims to shed light on the current status of the design of social robots and their interaction with patients. To this end, a systematic review was conducted using WoS and MEDLINE, and the results were exhaustive analyzed. The authors found that most of the initiatives and projects serve the el- derly and children, and specifically, that they helped these groups fight diseases such as dementia, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), cancer, and diabetes
Facial expression recognition and intensity estimation.
Doctoral Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.Facial Expression is one of the profound non-verbal channels through which human emotion state is inferred from the deformation or movement of face components when facial muscles are activated. Facial Expression Recognition (FER) is one of the relevant research fields in Computer Vision (CV) and Human-Computer Interraction (HCI). Its application is not limited to: robotics, game, medical, education, security and marketing. FER consists of a wealth of information. Categorising the information into primary emotion states only limit its performance. This thesis considers investigating an approach that simultaneously predicts the emotional state of facial expression images and the corresponding degree of intensity. The task also extends to resolving FER ambiguous nature and annotation inconsistencies with a label distribution learning method that considers correlation among data. We first proposed a multi-label approach for FER and its intensity estimation using advanced machine learning techniques. According to our findings, this approach has not been considered for emotion and intensity estimation in the field before. The approach used problem transformation to present FER as a multilabel task, such that every facial expression image has unique emotion information alongside the corresponding degree of intensity at which the emotion is displayed. A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with a sigmoid function at the final layer is the classifier for the model. The model termed ML-CNN (Multilabel Convolutional Neural Network) successfully achieve concurrent prediction of emotion and intensity estimation. ML-CNN prediction is challenged with overfitting and intraclass and interclass variations. We employ Visual Geometric Graphics-16 (VGG-16) pretrained network to resolve the overfitting challenge and the aggregation of island loss and binary cross-entropy loss to minimise the effect of intraclass and interclass variations. The enhanced ML-CNN model shows promising results and outstanding performance than other standard multilabel algorithms. Finally, we approach data annotation inconsistency and ambiguity in FER data using isomap manifold learning with Graph Convolutional Networks (GCN). The GCN uses the distance along the isomap manifold as the edge weight, which appropriately models the similarity between adjacent nodes for emotion predictions. The proposed method produces a promising result in comparison with the state-of-the-art methods.Author's List of Publication is on page xi of this thesis
A Systematic Survey of ML Datasets for Prime CV Research Areas-Media and Metadata
The ever-growing capabilities of computers have enabled pursuing Computer Vision through Machine Learning (i.e., MLCV). ML tools require large amounts of information to learn from (ML datasets). These are costly to produce but have received reduced attention regarding standardization. This prevents the cooperative production and exploitation of these resources, impedes countless synergies, and hinders ML research. No global view exists of the MLCV dataset tissue. Acquiring it is fundamental to enable standardization. We provide an extensive survey of the evolution and current state of MLCV datasets (1994 to 2019) for a set of specific CV areas as well as a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the results. Data were gathered from online scientific databases (e.g., Google Scholar, CiteSeerX). We reveal the heterogeneous plethora that comprises the MLCV dataset tissue; their continuous growth in volume and complexity; the specificities of the evolution of their media and metadata components regarding a range of aspects; and that MLCV progress requires the construction of a global standardized (structuring, manipulating, and sharing) MLCV "library". Accordingly, we formulate a novel interpretation of this dataset collective as a global tissue of synthetic cognitive visual memories and define the immediately necessary steps to advance its standardization and integration
A Novel Apex-Time Network for Cross-Dataset Micro-Expression Recognition
The automatic recognition of micro-expression has been boosted ever since the
successful introduction of deep learning approaches. As researchers working on
such topics are moving to learn from the nature of micro-expression, the
practice of using deep learning techniques has evolved from processing the
entire video clip of micro-expression to the recognition on apex frame. Using
the apex frame is able to get rid of redundant video frames, but the relevant
temporal evidence of micro-expression would be thereby left out. This paper
proposes a novel Apex-Time Network (ATNet) to recognize micro-expression based
on spatial information from the apex frame as well as on temporal information
from the respective-adjacent frames. Through extensive experiments on three
benchmarks, we demonstrate the improvement achieved by learning such temporal
information. Specially, the model with such temporal information is more robust
in cross-dataset validations.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables, code available, accepted in ACII 201
Robust mouse tracking in complex environments using neural networks.
The ability to track animals accurately is critical for behavioral experiments. For video-based assays, this is often accomplished by manipulating environmental conditions to increase contrast between the animal and the background in order to achieve proper foreground/background detection (segmentation). Modifying environmental conditions for experimental scalability opposes ethological relevance. The biobehavioral research community needs methods to monitor behaviors over long periods of time, under dynamic environmental conditions, and in animals that are genetically and behaviorally heterogeneous. To address this need, we applied a state-of-the-art neural network-based tracker for single mice. We compare three different neural network architectures across visually diverse mice and different environmental conditions. We find that an encoder-decoder segmentation neural network achieves high accuracy and speed with minimal training data. Furthermore, we provide a labeling interface, labeled training data, tuned hyperparameters, and a pretrained network for the behavior and neuroscience communities

Shortest Route at Dynamic Location with Node Combination-Dijkstra Algorithm
Abstract— Online transportation has become a basic
requirement of the general public in support of all activities to go
to work, school or vacation to the sights. Public transportation
services compete to provide the best service so that consumers
feel comfortable using the services offered, so that all activities
are noticed, one of them is the search for the shortest route in
picking the buyer or delivering to the destination. Node
Combination method can minimize memory usage and this
methode is more optimal when compared to A* and Ant Colony
in the shortest route search like Dijkstra algorithm, but can’t
store the history node that has been passed. Therefore, using
node combination algorithm is very good in searching the
shortest distance is not the shortest route. This paper is
structured to modify the node combination algorithm to solve the
problem of finding the shortest route at the dynamic location
obtained from the transport fleet by displaying the nodes that
have the shortest distance and will be implemented in the
geographic information system in the form of map to facilitate
the use of the system.
