Long-tem digital preservation in e-Science domains

    Get PDF
The complexity of digital preservation increases with the fact that each type of digital object has its own particularities and special requirements. The collaborative environment of the scientific community, and associated services and infrastructures, usually known as e-Science (or enhanced Science), involves the requirement of interoperability and the respective data sharing. In a broad sense, e-Science concerns the set of techniques, services, personnel and organizations involved in collaborative and networked science. It includes technology but also human social structures and new large scale processes of making science. It also means, on the same time, a need and an opportunity for a better integration between science and engineering processes. Thus, long-term preservation can be thought as a required property for future science and engineering, to assure communication over time, so that information that is understood today is transmitted to an unknown system in the future

10291 Abstracts Collection -- Automation in Digital Preservation

Digital Preservation has evolved into a specialized, interdisciplinary research discipline of its own, seeing significant increases in terms of research capacity, results, but also challenges. However, with this specialization and subsequent formation of a dedicated subgroup of researchers active in this field, limitations of the challenges addressed can be observed. Digital preservation research may seem to react to problems arising, fixing problems that exist now, rather than proactively researching new solutions that may be applicable only after a few years of maturing. Recognising the benefits of bringing together researchers and practitioners with various professional backgrounds related to digital preservation, a seminar was organized in Schloss Dagstuhl, at the Leibniz Center for Informatics (18-23 July 2010), with the aim of addressing the current digital preservation challenges, with a specific focus on the automation aspects in this field. The main goal of the seminar was to outline some research challenges in digital preservation, providing a number of “research questions” that could be immediately tackled, e.g. in Doctoral Thesis. The seminar intended also to highlight the need for the digital preservation community to reach out to IT research and other research communities outside the immediate digital preservation domain, in order to jointly develop solutions

Born-Digital Objects in the Deeds of Gift of Collecting Repositories: A Latent Content Analysis

    Get PDF
This study describes a latent content analysis of the deeds of gift currently used by collecting repositories in the United States. The study was conducted to determine the presence of a range of concepts related to digital materials and born-digital objects in a collecting repository's deed of gift. Nearly one-third of 80 deeds of gift discuss digital materials, yet only five repositories currently address born-digital objects. Access to digital materials and digital preservation activities are the concepts most likely to be addressed in deeds of gift, while the specification of the repository as holder of the official research digital copy, the creation of technical metadata, and method of capturing born-digital objects are among the concepts least likely to be discussed. Data suggest longer deeds of gift are more likely to address concepts related to digital materials and born-digital objects

From Bitstreams to Heritage: Putting Digital Forensics into Practice in Collecting Institutions

    Get PDF
This paper examines the application of digital forensics methods to materials in collecting institutions – particularly libraries, archives and museums. It discusses motivations, challenges, and emerging strategies for the use of these technologies and workflows. It is a product of the BitCurator project. The BitCurator project began on October 1, 2011, through funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. BitCurator is an effort to build, test, and analyze systems and software for incorporating digital forensics methods into the workflows of a variety of collecting institutions. It is led by the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH) at the University of Maryland, and involves contributors from several other institutions. Two groups of external partners are contributing to this process: a Professional Expert Panel (PEP) of individuals who are at various levels of implementing digital forensics tools and methods in their collecting institution contexts, and a Development Advisory Group (DAG) of individuals who have significant experience with software development.2 This paper is a product of phase one of BitCurator (October 1, 2011 – September 30, 2013). The second phase of the project (October 1, 2013 – September 29, 2014) continues the development of the BitCurator environment, along with expanded professional engagement and community outreach activities

Preservação de longo prazo de conhecimento codificado: proposição de um framework

    Get PDF
Abstract : The continued growth of information volumes in organizations results from the growth of the activities developed by the society in general and of the facilities offered by the constant evolution of information technology. The fast development of new technologies that facilitate the creation of content threatens its preservation and makes it technologically obsolete in a short time. In the context of technological mutability and huge volumes of digital objects, the objectives of this work are the design and the proposal of a framework for long-term digital preservation, aiming the preservation of knowledge. For this purpose, we refer to the fundamentals, techniques and methodologies of knowledge engineering, knowledge management, archival science, library science and computing, such as the appraisal process developed in the archival science and the OAIS reference model. The validation of the framework was realized through semi-structured interviews with specialists in computing, knowledge management and preservation of digital documents. All specialists considered the proposed framework applicable and recognized the impossibility of keeping whole digital content. This confirms the importance of the process of appraisal and selection of objects that will be preserved. Adjustments were introduced in the framework based on the suggestions given by interviewees. The conclusion was that the selection of digital objects for the preservation of knowledge can be safely performed if the appraisal criteria are clearly stated. The preservation of the knowledge encoded in digital objects is possible if the object and the technology that enables your access are aligned. Therefore, the management of digital objects technological dependence is an important component of the digital preservation process
