The recognition of entities and their relationships in document collections is an important step towards the discovery of latent knowledge as well as to support knowledge management applications. The challenge lies on how to extract and correlate entities, aiming to answer key knowledge management questions, such as; who works with whom, on which projects, with which customers and on what research areas. The present work proposes a knowledge mining approach supported by information retrieval and text mining tasks in which its core is based on the correlation of textual elements through the LRD (Latent Relation Discovery) method. Our experiments show that LRD outperform better than other correlation methods. Also, we present an application in order to demonstrate the approach over knowledge management scenarios.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) Denmark's Electronic Research Librar

Integrative genomic analyses of neurofibromatosis tumours identify SOX9 as A biomarker and survival gene

Understanding the biological pathways critical for common neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) peripheral nerve tumours is essential, as there is a lack of tumour biomarkers, prognostic factors and therapeutics. We used gene expression profiling to define transcriptional changes between primary normal Schwann cells (n - 10), NF1-derived primary benign neurofibroma Schwann cells (NFSCs) (n = 22), malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST) cell lines (n = 13), benign neurofibromas (NF) (n = 26) and MPNST (n = 6). Dermal and plexiform NFs were indistinguishable. A prominent theme in the analysis was aberrant differentiation. NFs repressed gene programs normally active in Schwann cell precursors and immature Schwann cells. MPNST signatures strongly differed; genes up-regulated in sarcomas were significantly enriched for genes activated in neural crest cells. We validated the differential expression of 82 genes including the neural crest transcription factor SOX9 and SOX9 predicted targets. SOX9 immunoreactivity was robust in NF and MPSNT tissue sections and targeting SOX9 - strongly expressed in NF1-related tumours - caused MPNST cell death. SOX9 is a biomarker of NF and MPNST, and possibly a therapeutic target in NF1

I don’t know what the people do all day : a viagem e a paisagem no slow cinema

The main goal of this study is to explore the way the journey and the landscape are presented in slow cinema. Firstly, a characterization of slow cinema will be outlined taking into account some important moments from the history of cinema. Secondly, we try to understand how those aspects, as well as the concepts of journey and landscape, are featured in the films Wendy and Lucy (2008) by Kelly Reichardt, Liverpool (2008) by Lisandro Alonso and Da xiang xi di er zuo (An Elephant Sitting Still, 2018) by Hu Bo. Slow cinema is associated with many formal characteristics, such as the long take and a particular kind of temporality, and also with specific themes, including the attention given to marginal figures who, through their journey and relationship with the landscape, pursue a change of their living conditions. In addition to the relationship that slow cinema establishes with the road movie, we will see how this style is historically related to cinematographic movements such as the Italian Neorealism, the First Durational Cinema and Transcendental Cinema. We will also look at the way some themes and characteristics typical to these movements are currently approached in slow cinema. Thus, this analysis focuses on the protagonists’ journeys and their relationship with the landscape, considering how their marginality and socioeconomic conditions enhance the displacement. This study also intends to look at the criticism of modern society displayed in many slow cinema films
