Travel arrangements and flight ticket booking via inter-net is widely used nowadays and follow already certain standards. Although increasing activity for multimedia/web education components can be observed, we are far away from standards in this important area. Statistics can possibly profit the most from e-learning since it requires a variety of skills including handling of quantitative data, graphical insights as well as mathematical ability. In this paper we take two positions – the student’s view and the teacher’s view – and discuss their relative coherence in order to propose standards for e-learning of statistics. The proposed standards are flexible with regard to content, multi-functionality, interactive capability and design. For this reason the main focus may be directed on quality of e-learning tools in order to meet both teacher’s and student’s requirements. This is especially true for statistics which is taught in various disciplines. We present our thoughts and exemplify them via the e-learning/e-teaching tools MM*Stat and e-stat. The struc-ture and the main characteristics of both multimedia tools will be explained. Then it will be described how such standards may be transferred to other cultures, languages or disciplines via the platform MD*Book

    Ajatuksia E-Portfolion hyödyntämisestä

Projektiaiheen ajankohtaisuus ja tulevaisuuden työmarkkinat olivat tärkein syy lähteä tutkimaan lähemmin verkossa tapahtuvaa oppimista. Discendumin tarjoama Kyvyt.f –palvelun ePortfolio on PLE (Personal learning Environment) oppimisalustalla oleva toiminto omien kykyjen esilletuomiseksi. PLE oppimisympäristönä on vastaus moniin tämän hetken haasteisiin. My main reason to look at net/web based learning was the rising trend of E-portfolios and the way they can be used in different fields. The kyvyt.fi E-portfolio service, provided by Discendum, is a prime example of how the PLE (Personal Learning Environment) can be used to highlight a subjects strengths and abilities. The use of PLE as a learning tool/environment can be an answer to many of the challenges regular methods face as it combines the individual and social aspects of learning in an fascinating way. Web-based learning is not as advanced in Finland as one would think. During this project, my aim was to clarify why it is so, and at the same time learn new methods on how to promote personal abilities. I used my own field of expertise, Beauty industry as a reference, as it is a field where this platform is used very rarely in any form. The task of building an E-portfolio into a usable form and investigating its origin and advantages has strengthened the reasons why I started studying in the first place. For me it is an excellent platform to be able to show my earlier projects and events, and brings my studies at TUAMK to a great conclusion

Short-Term Forecasting of Passenger Demand under On-Demand Ride Services: A Spatio-Temporal Deep Learning Approach

Short-term passenger demand forecasting is of great importance to the on-demand ride service platform, which can incentivize vacant cars moving from over-supply regions to over-demand regions. The spatial dependences, temporal dependences, and exogenous dependences need to be considered simultaneously, however, which makes short-term passenger demand forecasting challenging. We propose a novel deep learning (DL) approach, named the fusion convolutional long short-term memory network (FCL-Net), to address these three dependences within one end-to-end learning architecture. The model is stacked and fused by multiple convolutional long short-term memory (LSTM) layers, standard LSTM layers, and convolutional layers. The fusion of convolutional techniques and the LSTM network enables the proposed DL approach to better capture the spatio-temporal characteristics and correlations of explanatory variables. A tailored spatially aggregated random forest is employed to rank the importance of the explanatory variables. The ranking is then used for feature selection. The proposed DL approach is applied to the short-term forecasting of passenger demand under an on-demand ride service platform in Hangzhou, China. Experimental results, validated on real-world data provided by DiDi Chuxing, show that the FCL-Net achieves better predictive performance than traditional approaches including both classical time-series prediction models and neural network based algorithms (e.g., artificial neural network and LSTM). This paper is one of the first DL studies to forecast the short-term passenger demand of an on-demand ride service platform by examining the spatio-temporal correlations.Comment: 39 pages, 10 figure

Based on the summary of recent renowned publications, Mobile Learning (ML) has become an emerging technology, as well as a new technique that can enhance the quality of learning. Due to the increasing importance of ML, the investigation of such impacts on the e-Science community is amongst the hot topics, which also relate to part of these research areas: Grid Infrastructure, Wireless Communication, Virtual Research Organization and Semantic Web. The above examples contribute to the demonstrations of how Mobile Learning can be applied into e-Science applications, including usability. However, there are few papers addressing testing and quality engineering issues – the core component for software engineering. Therefore, the major purpose of this paper is to present how Web Service Testing for Mobile Learning can be carried out, in addition to re-investigating the influences of the usability issue with both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Out of many mobile technologies available, the Pocket PC and Tablet PC have been chosen as the equipment; and the OMII Web Service, the 64-bit .NET e-portal and the GPS-PDA are the software tools to be used for Web Service testing
