A survey of cost-sensitive decision tree induction algorithms
The past decade has seen a significant interest on the problem of inducing decision trees that take account of costs of misclassification and costs of acquiring the features used for decision making. This survey identifies over 50 algorithms including approaches that are direct adaptations of accuracy based methods, use genetic algorithms, use anytime methods and utilize boosting and bagging. The survey brings together these different studies and novel approaches to cost-sensitive decision tree learning, provides a useful taxonomy, a historical timeline of how the field has developed and should provide a useful reference point for future research in this field
Agricultural Risk Aversion Revisited: A Multicriteria Decision-Making Approach
In modelling farm systems it is widely accepted that risk plays a central role. Furthermore, farmers' risk aversion determines their decisions in both the short and the long run. This paper presents a methodology based on multiple criteria mathematical programming to obtain relative and absolute risk aversion coefficients. We rely on multiattribute utility theory (MAUT) to elicit a separable additive multiattribute utility function and then estimate the risk aversion coefficients and apply this methodology to an irrigated area of Northern Spain. The results show a wide variety of attitudes to risk among farmers, who mainly exhibit decreasing absolute risk aversion (DARA) and constant relative risk aversion (CRRA).Risk analysis, Agriculture, Utility theory, Multiple criteria analysis, Risk and Uncertainty,
Environmental Economics
This article provides an overview of the economics of environmental policy, including the setting of goals and targets, notably the Kaldor-Hicks criterion and the related method of assessment known as benefit-cost analysis. Also reviewed are the means of environmental policy, that is, the choice of specific policy instruments, featuring an examination of potential criteria for assessing alternative instruments, with focus on cost-effectiveness. The theoretical foundations and experiential highlights of individual instruments are reviewed, including conventional command-and-control mechanisms and market-based instruments.

Boosting Applied to Word Sense Disambiguation
In this paper Schapire and Singer's AdaBoost.MH boosting algorithm is applied
to the Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) problem. Initial experiments on a set of
15 selected polysemous words show that the boosting approach surpasses Naive
Bayes and Exemplar-based approaches, which represent state-of-the-art accuracy
on supervised WSD. In order to make boosting practical for a real learning
domain of thousands of words, several ways of accelerating the algorithm by
reducing the feature space are studied. The best variant, which we call
LazyBoosting, is tested on the largest sense-tagged corpus available containing
192,800 examples of the 191 most frequent and ambiguous English words. Again,
boosting compares favourably to the other benchmark algorithms.Comment: 12 page
