The Byzantine attack in cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS), also known as the spectrum sensing data falsification (SSDF) attack in the literature, is one of the key adversaries to the success of cognitive radio networks (CRNs). In the past couple of years, the research on the Byzantine attack and defense strategies has gained worldwide increasing attention. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey and tutorial on the recent advances in the Byzantine attack and defense for CSS in CRNs. Specifically, we first briefly present the preliminaries of CSS for general readers, including signal detection techniques, hypothesis testing, and data fusion. Second, we analyze the spear and shield relation between Byzantine attack and defense from three aspects: the vulnerability of CSS to attack, the obstacles in CSS to defense, and the games between attack and defense. Then, we propose a taxonomy of the existing Byzantine attack behaviors and elaborate on the corresponding attack parameters, which determine where, who, how, and when to launch attacks. Next, from the perspectives of homogeneous or heterogeneous scenarios, we classify the existing defense algorithms, and provide an in-depth tutorial on the state-of-the-art Byzantine defense schemes, commonly known as robust or secure CSS in the literature. Furthermore, we highlight the unsolved research challenges and depict the future research directions.Comment: Accepted by IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutoiral

Improving the efficiency of healthcare systems is a top national interest worldwide. However, the need to deliver scalable healthcare services to patients while reducing costs is a challenging issue. Among the most promising approaches for enabling smart healthcare (s-health) are edge-computing capabilities and next-generation wireless networking technologies that can provide real-time and cost-effective patient remote monitoring. In this article, we present our vision of exploiting MEC for s-health applications. We envision a MEC-based architecture and discuss the benefits that it can bring to realize in-network and context-aware processing so that the s-health requirements are met. We then present two main functionalities that can be implemented leveraging such an architecture to provide efficient data delivery, namely, multimodal data compression and edge-based feature extraction for event detection. The former allows efficient and low distortion compression, while the latter ensures high-reliability and fast response in case of emergency applications. Finally, we discuss the main challenges and opportunities that edge computing could provide and possible directions for future research

    Get PDF
Gait analysis using smart sensor technology is an important medical diagnostic process and has many applications in rehabilitation, therapy and exercise training. In this thesis, we present a low power wireless smart-shoe system (LPcomS) to analyze different functional postures and characteristics of gait while walking. We have designed and implemented a smart-shoe with a Bluetooth communication module to unobtrusively collect data using smartphone in any environment. With the design of a shoe insole equipped with four pressure sensors, the foot pressure is been collected, and those data are used to obtain accurate gait pattern of a patient. With our proposed portable sensing system and effective low power communication algorithm, the smart-shoe system enables detailed gait analysis. Experimentation and verification is conducted on multiple subjects with different gait including free gait. The sensor outputs, with gait analysis acquired from the experiment, are presented in this thesis

Due to the fast growing of population, a lot of hospitals get crowded from the huge amount of patients visits. Moreover, during COVID-19 a lot of patients prefer staying at home to minimize the spread of the virus. The need for providing care to patients at home is essential. Internet of Things (IoT) is widely known and used by different fields. IoT based homecare will help in reducing the burden upon hospitals. IoT with homecare bring up several benefits such as minimizing human exertions, economical savings and improved efficiency and effectiveness. One of the important requirement on homecare system is the accuracy because those systems are dealing with human health which is sensitive and need high amount of accuracy. Moreover, those systems deal with huge amount of data due to the continues sensing that need to be processed well to provide fast response regarding the diagnosis with minimum cost requirements. Heart is one of the most important organ in the human body that requires high level of caring. Monitoring heart status can diagnose disease from the early stage and find the best medication plan by health experts. Continues monitoring and diagnosis of heart could exhaust caregivers efforts. Having an IoT heart monitoring model at home is the solution to this problem. Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals are used to track heart condition using waves and peaks. Accurate and efficient IoT ECG monitoring at home can detect heart diseases and save human lives. As a consequence, an IoT ECG homecare monitoring model is designed in this thesis for detecting Cardiac Arrhythmia and diagnosing heart diseases. Two databases of ECG signals are used; one online which is old and limited, and another huge, unique and special from real patients in hospital. The raw ECG signal for each patient is passed through the implemented Low Pass filter and Savitzky Golay filter signal processing techniques to remove the noise and any external interference. The clear signal in this model is passed through feature extraction stage to extract number of features based on some metrics and medical information along with feature extraction algorithm to find peaks and waves. Those features are saved in the local database to apply classification on them. For the diagnosis purpose a classification stage is made using three classification ways; threshold values, machine learning and deep learning to increase the accuracy. Threshold values classification technique worked based on medical values and boarder lines. In case any feature goes above or beyond these ranges, a warning message appeared with expected heart disease. The second type of classification is by using machine learning to minimize the human efforts. A Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm is proposed by running the algorithm on the features extracted from both databases. The classification accuracy for online and hospital databases was 91.67% and 94% respectively. Due to the non-linearity of the decision boundary, a third way of classification using deep learning is presented. A full Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) Neural Network is implemented to improve the accuracy and reduce the errors. The number of errors reduced to 0.019 and 0.006 using online and hospital databases. While using hospital database which is huge, there is a need for a technique to reduce the amount of data. Furthermore, a novel adaptive amplitude threshold compression algorithm is proposed. This algorithm is able to make diagnosis of heart disease from the reduced size using compressed ECG signals with high level of accuracy and low cost. The extracted features from compressed and original are similar with only slight differences of 1%, 2% and 3% with no effects on machine learning and deep learning classification accuracy without the need for any reconstructions. The throughput is improved by 43% with reduced storage space of 57% when using data compression. Moreover, to achieve fast response, the amount of data should be reduced further to provide fast data transmission. A compressive sensing based cardiac homecare system is presented. It gives the channel between sender and receiver the ability to carry small amount of data. Experiment results reveal that the proposed models are more accurate in the classification of Cardiac Arrhythmia and in the diagnosis of heart diseases. The proposed models ensure fast diagnosis and minimum cost requirements. Based on the experiments on classification accuracy, number of errors and false alarms, the dictionary of the compressive sensing selected to be 900. As a result, this thesis provided three different scenarios that achieved IoT homecare Cardiac monitoring to assist in further research for designing homecare Cardiac monitoring systems. The experiment results reveal that those scenarios produced better results with high level of accuracy in addition to minimizing data and cost requirements

Due to the increase in industrial applications of Internet of Things (IoT), number of internet connected devices have been increased accordingly. This has resulted in big challenges in terms of accessibility, scalability, connectivity and adaptability. IoT is capable of creating connections between devices on wireless medium but the utilization of scarce spectrum in efficient manner for the establishment of these connections is the biggest concern. To accommodate spectrum allocation problem different radio technologies are being utilized. One of the most efficient technique being used is cognitive radio, which dynamically allocate the unlicensed spectrum for IoT applications. Spectrum sensing being the fundamental component of Cognitive Radio Network (CRN) is threatened by security attacks. Process of spectrum sensing is disturbed by the malicious user (MU) which attacks the primary signal detection and affects the accuracy of sensing outcome. The presence of such MU in system, sending false sensing data can degrade the performance of cognitive radios. Therefore, in this article a blockchain based method is proposed for the MU detection in network. By using this method an MU can easily be discriminated from a reliable user through cryptographic keys. The efficiency of the proposed mechanism is analyzed through proper simulations using MATLAB. Consequently, this mechanism can be deployed for the validation of participating users in the process of spectrum sensing in CRN for IoTs.publishe

MICCS: A Novel Framework for Medical Image Compression Using Compressive Sensing

The vision of some particular applications such as robot-guided remote surgery where the image of a patient body will need to be captured by the smart visual sensor and to be sent on a real-time basis through a network of high bandwidth but yet limited. The particular problem considered for the study is to develop a mechanism of a hybrid approach of compression where the Region-of-Interest (ROI) should be compressed with lossless compression techniques and Non-ROI should be compressed with Compressive Sensing (CS) techniques. So the challenge is gaining equal image quality for both ROI and Non-ROI while overcoming optimized dimension reduction by sparsity into Non-ROI. It is essential to retain acceptable visual quality to Non-ROI compressed region to obtain a better reconstructed image. This step could bridge the trade-off between image quality and traffic load. The study outcomes were compared with traditional hybrid compression methods to find that proposed method achieves better compression performance as compared to conventional hybrid compression techniques on the performances parameters e.g. PSNR, MSE, and Compression Ratio

A label based routing protocol for wireless sensor networks

One of the challenging issues in wireless sensor networks is to acquire, process, and transmit information using the least amount of battery power; In response to this problem, a novel routing scheme for wireless sensor networks, called Information Dissemination via Label Forwarding (IDLF) , is presented. IDLF consists of three information exchanging stages. In the first stage, a label is disseminated by a source. After a sink receives the label, it replies a request to the source. By exchanging a label and request, a data path between a source and sink is formed. Finally, an actual data is transmitted through the data path. Transmitting labels and requests, instead of actual data, reduces the redundant transmissions of data packets, and thus achieves energy savings; In addition to IDLF, four energy management schemes---directional forwarding, minimum transmission around the sink, battery threshold value, and differential coding---are proposed. We compare IDLF with flooding and another wireless routing protocol named SPIN. The simulation results show that the IDLF together with four energy management schemes can save a significant amount of energy compared to the other two routings
